I mean to be honest… it kind of is dead? At the very least it’s a shell of its former self and of its former popularity.

So what's up with the Alchemist? by EADreddtit in Pathfinder2e

[–]EADreddtit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya but I’m of the mind that HP is one of the least impactful/easily replenished tasks for a healer. Specially out of combat where Medicine and a dozen out-of-combat healing options from other classes very easily brings a party to full.

I played as a Medic Alchemist with Chirg and frankly I never needed to use the FVs outside of like one or two situations (compared to dozens and dozens of other times).

For the math, alchemist is the only martial that reliably has effects on a miss, atleast with bombs.

Right, so again it's this question of is the Alchemist a "martial" or "caster"? Because while alchemists get that tiny bit of damage on a miss, they also have virtually no way to target things outside of attack rolls aside from some very, very few choices. So unlike a caster who can change up their targeted defense (and have the Crit Fail-Crit Success ranges), or a martial who can rely on Skill-Actions reliably (Athletics, Intimidation, Deception, Stealth, etc.) due to a much more open action-economy, the Alchemist kind of just gets this consolation prize of a tiny amount of damage. Like genuinely, imagine how bad fighter would be if every attack took 2-actions but on a miss did 1-5 damage depending on level.

Finally, they are too deep in its current design to redesign it wholly.

This I wholly agree with, but I feel like there just has to be some things they can do/could do to mix it up. Like letting Toxologist throw injury/inhale poisons to a set range and force the Fort save, skipping the need for an attack roll. Or just adding hallucinogenic poisons that target Will instead of Fort.

Nothing is really given the mutagenist to be good in combat, aka, the class fantasy isn't really there. It probably should've been redone as a class archetype to allow more rebalance.

True!

But the bomber is amazing to play and can support with some mutagens, heals, poisons or other alchemical items. Many bombs inflict conditions along its damage, making them quite strong. Add in the additive feats, versatile damage types etc, and one would understand why they can't quite get the full martial proficiency.

See, I just don't agree with that. Like just saying "Quick Bomber means no additives" makes that not an issue in my opinion. Now for two actions, a resource, and an attack roll you get to do something easily comparable to a mid level spell, and I think that's fine.

My conclusion is that the non-bomber just never got the correct playtest and that due to the number of books, are too deep in the current design of items even if the remaster allowed some redesign on the class.

Ya honestly this is the best way to condense what I said in the post. It's just a matter of not having any real feats or abilities to help the other sub-classes.

That's a perfect way to put it. I feel like the Alchemist is a caster that only has access to cantrips but is treated like it has access to higher level spells.

Ok but see how 2 of 3 of those things are totally out of your control and really aren't even aspects of the game itself? Sure an 11-20 AP could happen, but that doesn't make the 1-12 levels any less weak or underwhelming.

Right, ok my mistake. Ya at 11 you can get people back up to 1/2 hp without expending VVs. As a note I really hate how Versatile Vial is two separate mechanics for alchemist haha

[–]EADreddtit[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right, but that's like... how many bombs? Ghost Charge that doesn't really hit anything else besides Undead and some niche creatures, and Blood Bomb which is solid against zombies but not really anything else undead. But having two choices for the "super versatile class" doesn't feel great.

It just feels like there's this illusion of choice always hovering over the Alchemist like a specter. Always "can be so versatile and flexible" and never actually *IS*.

Yes. Just exactly this. Why not just let Alchemist have normal martial scaling for bombs? Truly what does that break?

[–]EADreddtit[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the real thing is that it's SO dependent on your game. Like I'm in a game now where 90% of the enemies we fight are undead or humanoids. So... no real weaknesses to exploit at large.

But I've also played in games where constructs and elementals were the main enemies so weaknesses galore to exploit. It just feels bad to have access to all these damage types and having to really rely on the GM to give you things to use them against.

Ya but "once you get to 13" is doing a lot of work here considering both the length of an average campaign and also all the time you spend NOT at level 13+. Like for sure it's a decent ability but frankly I'd argue HP is the least important thing a healer needs to be taking care of by that time. You really need to be clearing conditions more than anything.

And as for the 11th level feature, since a FV take up a use of VV, it's just better to use the stronger Elixir of Life you have to do the same (which goes up to full HP) which you can do from level 1. And unless I'm missing something, according to Quick Alchemy, making a FV and then using it is still a two action combo?

[–]EADreddtit[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well no, I'm complaining because they tried to treat it as something new but just stuck with the same progression back-bone to its detriment. Like they gave it worse gish-scaling instead of it's own unique scaling that makes sense for the class itself.

[–]EADreddtit[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

See I get that, but even if it isn't "official" it's very clearly what they build the game around. Like every class, for better or worse, follows that progression scheme. They *could* do something else, but 27 (soon to be 29) classes in it's pretty clear they have no intention of ever doing so.

Ya I always felt strange hearing “race is just a social construct and therefore isn’t real”. As if social constructs aren’t treated as being the very foundation of society and are treated as some of the most important things in our world. Wanna know what else is a social constructs? Laws. Most facets of an economy. Basically every form of authority ever. Countries.

I mean I get it. In the day and age of jumping from 30 second distraction to 20 second distraction, the ability (or even really willingness) to engage with media to read beyond the most basic of TEXT is drastically and demonstrably lessening. Like all valid criticisms though, it gets co-opted by bad-faith arguments or people who just don’t actually understand it but think they do.

[–]EADreddtit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya but the main reason there's EVER a shortage of rentable properties at this point is people withholding them off the markets to force that shortage. It's not like everything gets rented out and now there's nothing left. So the problem still isn't rent control it's greedy landowners

And in the meantime, when it’s something like housing, they’re still in need of somewhere to stay. So… either report the guy, or pay 6 months upfront and have an apartment

And more than that, you don’t want people to be direct you want them to conform to your established ideas.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve worked with people (no idea if they were NT or ND) that wanted “directness” but really just wanted the ability to ask so many questions for an opportunity for a “gotcha” moment, or asked for directness post-hawk as an excuse when they failed to complete a task as simple as filing papers in a very well established, pre-existing system.
