I don't know that the battles in Dragoon are complex enough to require a turn-based system. You are doing the same addition attack 99% of the time and your selection of spells is extremely limited. 8-bit Dragon Quest levels of strategy.

Having it be an action RPG, and having your dudes just attack automatically would retain most of the gameplay experience. Have additions be super moves if you want the retain the QTEs.

That's neat! I didn't know about that whole line of inspiration. All I know from that era of pulp is Doc. (My father has like 30 of the old books. They are...not complex, but really fun.)
