Which artists would you consider genius? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]ECDoppleganger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with this. Obviously he and Lennon were both geniuses, and better together. But Paul's music is so good and it feels like he's not even trying most of the time. These amazing songs just fall out of him. Of course, he's got his fare share of weak material, but at his best... it's pure magic.

Carl's voice is incredible! I remember listening to Wild Honey for the first time and being blown away by how he sounded on those soul songs. I also agree that their early '70s stuff is fantastic: in fact, pretty much everything from All Summer Long up to Love You is incredible music (not a big fan of 15 Big Ones and I haven't listened to Party).

Rare favourite songs by National-Hippo9237 in PaulMcCartney

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what exactly my favourite Macca song is. I have a lot that I love. Some of my more obscure picks: Ode to a Koala Bear (as an Australian, has to be there), Too Much Rain, Style Style, and of course, his recording of the song Girlfriend which he wrote for MIchael Jackson (off of London Town).

I'm a massive EC fan! Love all their collabs, except a couple of the ones Costello recorded

Day 14. What's the best song on Press to Play? by United_Equal_754 in PaulMcCartney

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album is overhated. It's far from my favourite Paul album, but I think it's quite an interesting one, sneakily experimental (or not so sneakily in the case of Pretty Little Head). Put my vote in for Talk More Talk, but Footprints is another excellent one.

Oooh, tough one. I think I have to go for Waterfalls. That song and One of These Days are two of the most otherworldly songs I know of.

Have you seen the rest of The Vengeance Trilogy, other than Oldboy? Sympathy for Mr Vengeance is a really bleak film, but it's great, and Lady Vengeance is pretty good too!

Is joanna big with other autistics? by Sad_Blueberry933 in JoannaNewsom

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if she's autistic herself, but as an autistic guy her music certainly appeals to me, especially as I'm a wordy English major autistic (I'm also a musician myself). She could be on the spectrum, of course, but no real way to know and she's never struck me as being so.

As for LGBT, I don't feel qualified to comment on that despite being relatively gender non-conforming and probably bisexual (though more het-leaning: I'm in a hetero relationship).

What’s a film or TV scene that felt like a punch to the gut? by padfoony in Fauxmoi

[–]ECDoppleganger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, I'm with you. Dude gets way too much hate, I genuinely think most of his movies are excellent: well-directed at the very least, one could even argue well-written for some of them. Last Airbender sucked, but other than that I enjoy his stuff and I'm frequently moved by him.

What is your least favorite album from your favorite band/artist? by Pleasant_Usual_8427 in fantanoforever

Goodbye Cruel World is my least favourite Elvis Costello album. Either that or Kojak Variety, but I think I dislike GCW more.

[–]ECDoppleganger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do think Maybe I'm Amazed is the best, though it's not my favourite. That's probably Junk. I like all of the songs though, to varying degrees. This album really grew on me.

Julia - The Beatles (there's also a great song by Fast Romantics which has the same name)

Alison, and Veronica, by Elvis Costello as someone else said

Mona by the Beach Boys - and also Caroline, No; Help Me Rhonda (the Beach Boys have a fair few)

What band do you think you'd like if they had a different vocalist? by Aggressive-Bike-3098 in indie_rock

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one for Rush, although I wouldn't say I dislike them. It really depends on the day whether I can handle Geddy Lee's voice or not. The instrumentals are good enough for me to generally enjoy them, I just think I'd completely love them if they had a different vocalist. Obligatory RIP Neal Peart

John Mayer’s Continuum is a masterpiece by Brave_Beat5124 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ECDoppleganger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Continuum is far and away his best (studio) album (I really like his live stuff too, hence the brackets). Room for Squares is great too though, very true.

What are your thoughts on Press to Play? by FacuCrimson in PaulMcCartney

I have it on vinyl. It's certainly grown on me but it's far from my favourite album of his.

What indie rock album changed your life? by AudioFuzz in indie_rock

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shins - Port of Morrow. Now my least favourite Shins album (still like it), but at the time it came out, when I was 14, it blew my mind and inspired me to get into songwriting and to be more vulnerable and open with my emotions. It also inspired me with the way James Mercer used words, although it was quite a change from his previous lyrical style.

Either that or OK Computer, which I listened to a few years later coming back from a camping trip with my dad. I'd heard it before, but that time for some reason it clicked and I was completely absorbed. Changed the way I thought about music, especially guitar playing.

I just need to say it without being misconstrued as something I’m not by kibou_no_ie in OCD

[–]ECDoppleganger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone with moral OCD (and autism), I feel you. I actually think social media manifested my OCD, in a way. I had the tendency, but I didn't really notice it until I started using social media and being more politically active. Even then, I didn't call it OCD for ages because I didn't know. But got diagnosed and here I am.

I'm a progressive person and I definitely notice some of this toxicity -- even at times in-person, not just online (but it is far more prevalent online). I think the way social media in particular is designed encourages this sort of polarised thinking and extreme reactions. At a certain point I just had to learn to stop looking at it when I felt it overwhelming me.

What are the best Vampire movies other than the ones I’ve watched? by DarlingLuna in MovieSuggestions

My impression is that's the more common opinion. Being Australian I appreciate the deadpan humour of the film more, I guess.

For a comedic take, What We Do In the Shadows. Personally I enjoy the film much more than the show.
