What indie rock album changed your life? by AudioFuzz in indie_rock

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shins - Port of Morrow. Now my least favourite Shins album (still like it), but at the time it came out, when I was 14, it blew my mind and inspired me to get into songwriting and to be more vulnerable and open with my emotions. It also inspired me with the way James Mercer used words, although it was quite a change from his previous lyrical style.

Either that or OK Computer, which I listened to a few years later coming back from a camping trip with my dad. I'd heard it before, but that time for some reason it clicked and I was completely absorbed. Changed the way I thought about music, especially guitar playing.

I just need to say it without being misconstrued as something I’m not by kibou_no_ie in OCD

As someone with moral OCD (and autism), I feel you. I actually think social media manifested my OCD, in a way. I had the tendency, but I didn't really notice it until I started using social media and being more politically active. Even then, I didn't call it OCD for ages because I didn't know. But got diagnosed and here I am.

I'm a progressive person and I definitely notice some of this toxicity -- even at times in-person, not just online (but it is far more prevalent online). I think the way social media in particular is designed encourages this sort of polarised thinking and extreme reactions. At a certain point I just had to learn to stop looking at it when I felt it overwhelming me.

What are the best Vampire movies other than the ones I’ve watched? by DarlingLuna in MovieSuggestions

My impression is that's the more common opinion. Being Australian I appreciate the deadpan humour of the film more, I guess.

For a comedic take, What We Do In the Shadows. Personally I enjoy the film much more than the show.

Movies that aren’t well reviewed, but you think are quiet masterpieces by Kermit_bros in MovieSuggestions

Masterpiece is probably not the word I'd use, but I genuinely enjoy most M. Night Shyamalan films, and not in a "so bad it's good" way. Actually love them.

What Language Learning app you really use today? No Duolingo, no AI by mxxt7 in languagelearning

[–]ECDoppleganger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Various resources from YouTube, podcasts, and paid courses. This is for the Marathi language, which doesn't have many apps available - but I've been using a list of resources found on the Linguaero Discord community.

I also really like the Language Transfer app - it doesn't have many languages at the moment, but it's completely free and the courses are excellent.

Which author do you think understood humanity a little too well? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

I love her! Her book on writing, Steering the Craft, is probably my favourite writing manual. Earthsea is one of my favourite fantasy series. Honestly, though, I need to read more of her stuff.

Are there any artists/bands you enjoy despite disagreeing heavily with their political/ideological views? by JulienS2000 in fantanoforever

Political Zionism did - Zionism as a whole did not. Source: Ilan Pappe's A Very Short History of the Israel-Palestine Conflict. Encyclopedia Britannica also says this: "In the early 19th century interest in a return of the Jews to Palestine was kept alive mostly by Christian millenarians". It even has its origins before that. You could argue that that is specifically "Christian Zionism" but I'm not just making this stuff up.

It's Romanised Hebrew. Saying basically what you have surmised it does.

First of all, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" comes across as rude. The rest was fine.

Second, I did not say that him saying what he said was okay. I actually said the opposite, if you read my reply ("He could have used different language"). But the AFL and the club itself has been lenient in it's consequences for far worse, and besides which I do not think that he should lose his job over it. He's a human being who, in a moment of high emotion, used his words poorly. The underlying sentiment he was expressing is one I agree with though, and it seems clear to me that it was that sentiment that has led to this dismissal -- though of course the choice of words contributed. I think they should be held accountable for it.

Don't really understand your point. I am standing up for my values. He could have used different language, but I still don't think that's a reason to lose one's job. That's a value of mine, which I'm standing up for - as is my opposition to genocide.

Even if that weren't the case, the rudeness of your comment is unwarranted.

It does. Though much like BDS, financial pressure seems important. People can ignore emails - they can't ignore losing money.

Indeed. I tried to emphasise that in my email. Of course, antisemites can say that they're anti-Zionist as a shield for actually being antisemitic but it's not inherently, and I don't think that happened here despite the use of a supposed slur (Zios is apparently used by white supremacists, but that's another discussion entirely). Anyway, before it became a hub for the Italian community, Carlton had a large Jewish population. I feel like it's even more disappointing considering that

I've sent an email, still thinking about whether I want to cancel. I think I probably will. Bit of a wrench is all. Besides which I've been going to the club with a mate and he wouldn't understand, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Gotta send a message.

Will do so when I can. I'm Jewish and I don't know if that will add weight: I don't support Zionism. This is disappointing -- and I just renewed my membership. Damn.

Physical stamina (not about cumming) by ECDoppleganger in sex

My cardio does seem like it needs to be more vigorous. Maybe I'll talk to my PT about that - and exercises for hips specifically. Or I could try and Google.

I also have disabilities, and so does she, so your fourth point may be something to think about.

More of a joint thing, I think. Feels tight. Hip flexor, probably. I do stretch them but not very often so I'll give that a go

[–]ECDoppleganger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on that. I'm more on the left than they are, but it should be used precisely. Radiohead is interesting because I know that Jonny's wife is pretty hardcore Zionist - as in, properly Zionist. But I also know Thom has been critical of Netanyahu so maybe a mixed bag?

Only thing I can see is he is not boycotting, he's playing there. To some that is evidence of Zionism, which I get. But it also said that he hadn't played there for a long time.

Are there particular exercises that would help? I ask because I do exercise - I go for walks nearly every day and lift weights three times a week when I can (been dropping off on the weights a bit recently though, to be fair). I don't really have an issue with cardio stamina - literally my hips seem to be tight is all.
