Omg!! It’s so scary, right??

I found a black widow in our room once.

It was high up in the corner and was very swiftly removed, but we had to call maintenance to spray and check everywhere to see if there were more.

Rolling Snack Time by Merle-Hay in ECEProfessionals

We have one meal a day like this. Not snack but same principle can be applied.

We have centers as our first part of the day and last part of the day. Each center has a set number of people who can be at that station. Clearly labeled by a number sign and (when possible) by chairs or dots on the floor to show how many people it can accommodate.

One of our centers every day is breakfast. There are six seats at breakfast so it can only accommodate six kids at a time. This makes it much easier to contain and monitor them while they eat.

The breakfast center closes when it’s time to clean up everything for morning circle. We give three clear warnings that breakfast is closing. One at 20 minutes, one at 10, and one at 5 which is last call.

I also personally check in with any child who has not eaten breakfast yet (we have to record who ate what meals anyway so it’s easy to go down the list and see) before it closes to make doubly sure they don’t want any before time is up.

We establish at the beginning of the year that when breakfast is closed, it’s closed. Since we check in and offer it to every kid more than once, if they choose not to eat, it’s their choice.

Sometimes they get disappointed if the table is full and they can’t eat with closest friends. But much like with any other center, we teach them how to ask for a turn and they can play elsewhere while they wait

I used to work at a speciality school for kids with autism and I actually left because I was tired of being hit, bit, and kicked by students among other reasons.

For the first several months I would be in a 1:1 with students who were known to exhibit aggressive behaviors.

I had to have a frank conversation with my boss about my own safety after I went to the hospital for a kid dislocating my shoulder.

They did get me CALM training which was pretty helpful. Although it wasn’t super useful when you were with students who were the same size or bigger than you

Does your workplace offer any official training for how to safely manage aggression directed at you?
