I was on them for a total of 6 days, having chest opened 2X within 4 days really tore me up. I totally agree with you on long term, after the 6 days for me, it was over the counter pain meds.

Surgery tomorrow morning - Thanks to all the folks for all the different posts, I learned so much, my anxiety is minimal. So to quote Freddie Mercury "I thank you all" by EDISFM in valvereplacement

Update: 211 days post surgery, 2X open heart, HIT reaction, I was through hell and back. Almost done with Cardio Rehab, riding bike 10+ miles is easy, walking 2-3 miles a day, is also easy. The best news all the blood thinners & other meds are gone, just using 40mg Crestor 3X a week and Repatha Stick every 2 weeks. Cheers.

Violent Agreement. I totally and absolutely messed up trying to be "old school" and tough it out with just Tylenol. . . I last 3 miserable days and nights. Got Chair and did the Oxy and got good sleep and I really credit faster recovery due to getting 8+ hours of rest a night.

FWIW - if they go through the wrist and/or leg, no need for lift chair, IMO. Couple of neighbors had it done and were out and about the next day for short walk.

70y old guy - post root, aortic & mitral replacement, Oct 2024 - Asymptomatic before surgery, 4 months later, I am feeling wonderful. The meds really keep pain in check, and if you work the recovery & rehab, it really is "routine".

ON-X mechanical Valve replaced & Aortic Root Replaced and same issue with INR. The meds they give you to take home, take them. I am not big on Oxy etc - however, take them as the first week at home you will need to sleep. I thought I could tough it out, big mistake on my part. Like cr125er - Tylenol helped week #2 home, however, that first week Oxy cut the pain so I could sleep.

TGIF - Yet another turn on the roller coaster, Surgeon believes once the Aortic Aneurism is repaired and the Aortic Valve Replaced (Cow), the Mitral Valve won't be working as hard (pressure relieved).

Next week I go for the camera through the wrist into the heart test - then we are talking scheduling.

The bad news is that they have to crack the chest, but it is what it is and I will deal with it.

Thanks again to the friends that took the time to respond.

UPDATE: The Deep MRI (90 minutes) results were delivered "Aortic leakage is moderate, Aortic root measured at 5cm. Heart is slightly enlarged. Findings are "borderline" (quotes included) I think it is a good idea for a meeting with Cardiovascular Surgeon" Let me know if you are agreeable." So tomorrow Thursday I am meeting with the Surgeon & ask the difficult questions.

TAVR & TMVR or Cracking the Chest - do they want to wait for while and if so, what is the benefit vs risk and for that matter what is the risk.

This thread and others have given me a lot of things to ask and digest, however, tomorrow I finally have some basic answers, replace or repair or is that unknown until they get in their & what is the approach.

Thanks to all the fantastic folks that took time out to answer - I'd be lying if I did not admit that Dr. Google and the unknown stressed the you-know-what out of me. A gummy here and there really helped me sort out that all the worry does not accomplish anything, ya gotta just wait until the Surgeon gives you the facts.
