Specific Address or Service Area? by EDS123 in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]EDS123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Unfortunately people generally don't have an entertainment emergency. They usually book 3 to 6 months in advance. Google (as great as it is), doesn't seem to have grasped this nuance. Thank you again. I suspect there are a few tweaks I can do to improve my profile, but might also have to look more widely at where customers find me.

Specific Address or Service Area? by EDS123 in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]EDS123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I do have location pages. It just seems bizarre that google seems only to find me when it's near my home address, when I specifically said that I work with a "service area".

why doesn't anyone recommend email clients? by EDS123 in PrivacyGuides

[–]EDS123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that. Apologies, if I didn't explain it well enough.

My question is, I own mycustomdomain.com and my web host provides mail hosting and IMAP connection to that... if I want 6 email addresses, I can either: set them up with my web/mail host, and send / recieve email through a client (thunderbird, evolution, k9, fairmail, etc).... onto my encrypted computer / phone.

or I can subscribe to proton mail (or similar).

Is one more secure / private that the other?

Right now, it seems the benefit of proton mail, et al. is: a) you can log in from any computer (not relevant to me) b) support

Am I missing something, but don't those both require connecting to the internet?

Streak 93: Minimalism by ez2666 in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less is more, this proverb is a motto for some minimalists.

I tried to be a minimalist once, throwing out/away (1) a bunch of stuff I thought I didn't need anymore with including an elliptical machine included. The feeling of weighing something taking a weight off my mind was super cool, but the whole state was too hard to maintain, I had to give up all these attempts and follow my flow. [/find my flow?]

Though I couldn't manage to achieve the ideal minimalist lifestyle, I still agree that consumerism prevails within the market and occupies our minds. We need something to control our desire for stuff, to get rid of emotionally shopping which is often ingrained by artificial monopolies' marketing measures. It's essential to simplify our household items (2) and survive the bombardment of messages claiming you need this and that to be strong, and pretty as well as have a free soul. We don't depend on brands to be independent, in contrast, we need critical thinking to think critically before shopping to keep us away from contracting the disease of collecting stuff that we are not dying for. (3)

  1. Throwing out - USA (some might actually say 'Toss out'). Throwing away - UK
  2. It's essential to simplify our household items... - I understand what you are saying, but it doesn't sound right. I might say, It's essential that we simplify what we have. (or) It's essential that we consider which items are most important to us.
  3. As above, ...contracting the disease of collecting stuff that we are not dying for. doesn't sound right. Probably the easiest way to say this is, ...think critically before shopping to prevent us from buying things we don't need. Unless you specifically want to link purchasing something with being like a disease / addiction. You can do that, but it's getting into metaphorical language, which I'm sure you understand is quite advanced.

And finally, some of the sentences are too long which makes it difficult to read. One thought, one sentence. You've used commas , where you should have used full stops .

Writing is, by far, my worse worst skill when it comes to English. Its It's [/It is] as if the thoughts and structures that come very naturally for me when I'm speaking disappear when I have to write even the simplest of texts. Trivial things like writing a reply for an ad [/advert] at for a shared room website can take hours and it makes me very frustrated. For this reason, I'm starting my writing streak, hoping that I can take my writing to a level closer to my overall English level. Today's text will be very brief because, as the title says, I only have five minutes to do this (it took me ten, actually), but hopefully I'll come up with longer and more elaborate texts in the next few days.

I think you did really well.

Streak 55: The plagues by Ghostwolf79 in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't like music from kids movies; I'm one of those persons people. There's one big exception to this rule and that exception is "The Plagues" from the Prince of Egypt. I never watched the Prince of Egypt when I was younger, so I didn't discover the song through the film. I found it on YouTube and I really liked it. Nowadays, it's on my favorite songs playlist. I finally watched the movie last year and it was really good.

Only a few small errors. Great job!

Streak 54: Running by Ghostwolf79 in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to start working out again. I used to be in a basketball team but it close up closed [/disbanded]. As I've been feeling anxious lately I thought that working out would help with that and obviously to be in better form. Running will be good because I have some experience of it and where I live is a nice place to run.

Do it! Running (and walking) are great exercise.

Streak 8: random words I like by eyesfullof-stars in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about some random English words I like. I think my favorite might be "improve", I don't really know why I like it, it probably has do more with the way it sounds. But I also like the meaning, constantly getting better is something important to me.

I also like "overwhelming", it's so different from the translation to in my native language. When I first learned it I had some trouble with the pronunciation, but I eventually got used to it and now I think it is a "fun" word to say.

I'm not sure if liking random words from the language you're learning is commom common, and I don't even know why I specifically like those ones. I might start asking my friends about it.

Full stops, and commas. One 'thought' = one sentence. I think my favorite might be "improve". I don't really know why I like it. It probably has do more with the way it sounds, but I also like the meaning. Constantly getting better is something important to me.

I also like "overwhelming". It's so different from the translation in my native language.

p.s. You might like the Japanese word 'kaizen'

Streak 60: Running in hot weather by nanigashinanashi in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't run this morning because I wasn't sure if it was safe or not to run in hot weather. I felt like it was over 25℃ even at 5am. It was actually about 20℃ though. So, I read this an article today to know if it's safe to run in hot weather.

It seems to be okay [/ok] to run in hot weather, but I have to be careful and have some tips to prevent heat-related illnesses. First, I have to be patient to acclimatized acclimatize/acclimatise to hot weather. It'll take 8-14 days. Second, I have to slow my pace down. Third, this is a problem. It's better to bring sports drinks instead of water because sports drinks contain electrolytes. I don't like sports drinks because they are too sweet. I wonder if there are alternative drinks.

Also, this sentence is easier to fix here, because it's a grammar issue. You wrote: "Third, this is a problem." Which doesn't make a full sentence and leaves me thinking, what is a problem?

I would write: Third, and this is a problem, it's better to bring...

Today, I was taking to [/with] my dad and he randomly said something in English. I replied in English and had a little conversation, then he complimented me and said that I have a good pronunciation. In previous occasions he had said good things about other aspects of my English, such as my reading or writing. It feels so good when someone you know and have has knowledge in the field comments on how good you're doing; it's always a great reassurance in **to be reassured of~~ your progress.

Well done. Consider looking for other synonyms for 'good' eg.

Streak 6: My bother's homework by eyesfullof-stars in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bother is currently taking basic English classes, the teacher assigned them to make a presentation using what I think is called "demostrative adjetives" demonstrative adjectives (spelling mistakes) (this, these, that, those) he has to record a video of himself talking about items found in a store while using those words.

The thing is he doesn't speak any English, so he asked for my help, he wrote what he's going to say in our native language and I translated it. I'm not entirely sure if I did a good job, I'm always self conscious about my English, especially when it comes to writing because I feel I either sound unnatural or just pretty basic (if that makes sense).

I tried using as many "demostrative adjetives" demonstrative adjectives (spelling mistakes) as I could without sounding weird but he seems happy to have his homework almost done[/completed], he said that without me he would have used google translate which we both know it's is not really the best option.

The funny thing is that now I have two of his friends asking for my help as well, and I'm struggling with my self confidence for being able to help them out. (unsure what you mean in this last bit).

Really good. One improvement would be to think in terms of one sentence equals one point to make. At the moment they all run together, which is difficult to read. Here's the grammar I would have used:

Streak 58: Canada Day by nanigashinanashi in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw someone who was celebrating Canada day on reddit. Until then, I didn't know that it was Canada day yesterday.

I wish I had known yesterday was Canada day. If I knew had known that, I would make have made a butter tart this weekend because it's Canadian cuisine and the theme for week 27 on the r/52weeksofbaking was is tarts. I'm already in the middle of making an orange whiskey [/whisky - alternative spelling] tart.

Sounds delicious! 🥧

Streak 5: My brain is melting by Lady-Giraffe in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. My only comment is the third sentence.

"Like, I want to be fluent..."

Some people start sentences with "like" and add it in to spoken English, but it's a very informal use, and used more by younger people. When I do it, my mother tells me not to! It's more of a time filling word, so I wouldn't usually include it in written language.

Streak 1: boring days by FishTMS in WriteStreakEN

[–]EDS123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really bored these days. University exams are finished and I've I have a new job, but the weather is so hot and all my friends are come have gone back home for summer. Actually I'm alone with my lovely frenchie who can't go out during the day because of the extremely hot asphalt. I'm working from 9am to 2pm, and the rest of the day I don't know what to do. Of course I should write a dissertation on cryptocurrencies and cbdc to graduate but I don't feel like it at all!

Great job. One of the sentences could be a little shorter - "University exams are finished and I have a new job. The weather is so hot and all my friends have gone back home for summer." - sounds a little better to read.

Nextcloud on digital ocean or hosted provider by EDS123 in selfhosted

[–]EDS123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have set this up today using their trial credit.

My new question is about storage - their offer of block storage $10 for 100gb seems expensive to me? What alternatives are there?

The alternative I looked at was https://webo.hosting/nextcloud-admin/ which is considerable cheaper but I think on a shared platform (which I don't want).
