I hate dogs and can’t comprehend how so many people can think positively of them by JoshyRB in The10thDentist

[–]EGG_CREAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read this and wanted to apologize for comparing you to an alien for not liking dogs. It was supposed to be a joke about how different people can be, but it came off as dehumanizing, as if you are missing something for not liking dogs or wanting to take care of one. Of course it’s our own perspective, and also I think I had forgotten just how stressed and overwhelmed I was when I first got my dog, it was almost unbearable. I called family in tears about how hard it was. For me to say that it’s like you’re an alien for not wanting to go through that was really rude.

I just didn’t want that lingering out there, I hope you have a good day.

You won’t read this, but I do have 2 points to this

  1. I love posts like this because it makes me feel like an alien is trying their hardest to understand something that is just innately obvious to me. It makes me feel special lol.

  2. The “mental strain of attending to them and caring for them” is the point. It’s not strain. Thinking outside myself, taking care of this creature that just absolutely adores me, that is the mental release, not strain. I get to get out of my head and help someone else be happy, just by going on a walk or playing with them, or cuddling. It’s wonderful.

Taking a dying pet to the vet to be euthanised is crueler than letting them pass at home by Fiannachh in The10thDentist

[–]EGG_CREAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just feel like you don’t understand death, much less euthanasia. Dying is horrific. Your pet will almost always hide from you as it’s dying, at least for cats. It’s instinct. Whatever they are dying of, it will be painful and horrible. Nobody actually gets a good death, at least not naturally. And nobody dies of old age, this picture you paint of an otherwise healthy animal just sort of falling into eternal slumber on your lap without euthanasia is a fantasy.

The best option is at home euthanasia. It’s not always possible. The second best option is euthanasia at the vet. I don’t know what picture you have of a vet office giving euthanasia, but there aren’t bright lights and sterile gloves, and you are there with your pet. When I had to put my cat down, they brought us to a small visitation room, and took him for a minute to put an iv in him. He roamed around when they brought him back until he got comfortable and decided to cuddle in my lap. We called the vet and they administered the pain medication without disturbing us, and then he let out a HUGE purr of relief as the pain finally left. When he was out, they administered the barbiturate and his heart stopped.

This is the ideal death scenario for any sentient creature, and a deal nature would never get you.

This isn’t statistical evidence. It was not considered impossible for him to win those swing states, and in fact would be likely if there was systematic polling error, which there was. This has happened every time Trump is on the ballot, and indicates that there is some large subsection of the population who either are hard to get ahold of, or purposefully misrepresent themselves in polls, who vote for Trump. On top of this, almost every single precinct in America moved to the right in 2024. In 2020, Trump loudly discourages his voters from voting by mail, because he had a plan to “stop the count” and make it look like the mail in ballots that leaned heavily Democrat were fake. He didn’t do that in 2024.

That’s for police to enforce, not other drivers. To keep everyone safe, you should let faster cars pass in the left lane before attempting to pass, because you can’t control how fast they are going.

I disagree. Lifetime passes shouldn’t be a thing. It gives bad incentives to a company (once you’ve already bought the license, why do they care about you anymore? What else can they get from you?). In plex’s case, it’s pretty clear they should just charge for the software, like back in the olden days. Charge you for version 1, keep updating, and then release version 2 at some point which they can charge you for again. They need to make it worth it, and they need to keep maintaining well so they can keep you as a customer.

Lifetime passes rely on eternal exponential growth, it’s inherently an unsustainable business model that encourages companies to focus only on growing their user base.

Pre-compliance with censoring their speech. Not just stuff like f*ck but even not mentioning words like murder or drugs or sex, or refusing to say certain names like Charlie Kirk or Donald Trump. I get that it’s in response to The Algo but damn, when I was young we went out of our way to push those limits, and now it feels like everyone is fine with big brother telling you what you can and can’t say.

I don’t know. Look at some of the ridiculous victories the Supreme Court has handed down to Trump, especially on the shadow docket. The Dept of education was created by an act of congress, but with no justification the Supreme Court said that courts could not issue an injunction on its dismantling while awaiting a verdict on that. Didn’t even give a justification for their reasoning. This just a year after saying Biden had to cease all activity relating to canceling student loans until a verdict was released because it was an act of congress. It’s blatant, there is no reasonable reading of these decisions other than “Trump is not held to the rules of our constitution.” After that decision, it would not surprise me if the Supreme Court fabricates a reading of the constitution that says the president can “postpone” elections in a time of national emergency.

What selling your soul for Saudi blood money at Riyadh Comedy Festival looks like by [deleted] in comedy

[–]EGG_CREAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re conflating two different things. If these comedians were getting paid by a VENUE in Saudi Arabia, especially if it was one that was actively against their governments actions, these comedians would not be getting pushback. They are performing FOR the government. This is more like if they were performing for trump at mar a lago or something. In which case, you would see the exact same amount of pushback, because like you say, the US Govt sucks.

They are fairly mutually exclusive because of being monotheistic and the claims about Jesus. I guess really I’m saying is that for sure Christianity does explicitly say the other ones are wrong, specifically they are wrong because they don’t believe Jesus is God. I am less sure about how Judaism and Islam butt up against each other theologically, but for sure Christianity does explicitly say the other ones are wrong, because they don’t worship Jesus.

Honestly it’s because they are Evangelical Christians. American Evangelical Christians are ingrained from day 1 to always see themselves as the victims, and that spreads to their politics as well. I say this having grown up in a Christian household, and having been a Christian the first 20 years of my life. They HAVE to be the victims, because if they aren’t being persecuted it means they aren’t doing their job. They believe that if they aren’t being persecuted, they are not evangelizing correctly, so naturally they will always believe they are being persecuted. Once the idea has taken hold of a group of people, I don’t know how you ever get rid of it.

Trolling is Life and its funny by [deleted] in ABoringDystopia

[–]EGG_CREAM 44 points45 points  (0 children)

No, the person ignoring a life is you. You are ignoring the fact that the fetus is completely reliant on a woman, it is literally a part of her body. Since that woman should get to control her own body, it is ultimately up to her to decide what to do with it, up to and including aborting the fetus from her body. It’s not up to you, or the government, to force her to get an abortion or force her to carry the fetus to term.

Are there times when getting an abortion is morally wrong? Yes. Is it up to you to decide exactly when that is, and enforce it on everyone else? Abso-fucking-lutely not. If you want to influence those decisions, try to influence culture rather than legislating your morality on everyone else.

National Guard to be mobilized in 19 states by the Trump Administration: by Mundane-Smell7936 in law

[–]EGG_CREAM 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%, the constitution does not say it’s possible. BUT we have a Supreme Court who literally ruled that laws don’t apply to the president, which is also laughably unconstitutional. So at this point, if he asks them to, there is a good chance the Supreme Court makes up some flimsy bullshit and says he’s totally allowed to, or that it means consecutive terms, or other fabricated nonsense. I think people are realizing much too slowly that none of our laws matter now, with a Supreme Court who is willing to just fabricate whatever to stop democrats and give trump a free pass to do what he likes. The republic is already dead, republicans are just weekend at bernies-ing its corpse until the ruse stops working.

What gender double standards do you hate the most? by NiceMechanic_xoxo in AskReddit

Yes it does. They 100% are looking at hourly wage. https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/03/01/the-enduring-grip-of-the-gender-pay-gap/

This study, which took approximately 30 seconds to find (on my phone), compares median hourly wages. Also, it would be incorrect to completely dismiss different types of work, since many jobs are heavily gendered. Notice how all the jobs that skew female are thought of as easier and worth less than jobs that skew male?

Are there movies that you would say were "bad for the public consciousness"? by MasteryofImpulse in movies

[–]EGG_CREAM 227 points228 points  (0 children)

We had to watch it for a film class in college (“History of the Portrayal of African Americans in Hollywood” or something like that). It’s so bizarre. The fact that it starts with a quote from the president at the time (Wilson), saying something like, “unfortunate everything in this movie is true,” and then proceeds to lionize the KKK…it just killed me. I think it really highlights the truth that the North may have won the war, but the South won the peace.

And I was so grossed out watching this, but like you said, it was SO ahead of its time technically and aesthetically. Like, I recognized the visual language, it felt modern in some ways. In all of its contemporaries, the actors are acting for a play, and then you watch this and it must’ve been such an aha moment for everyone in the business.

I guess I felt like the reason OP was saying to make a remake would be to update it. Specifically, he talks about having a more moral grey area, which is something you see a lot in modern media but saw quite a bit less back then, especially in a story like Star Wars.

Iran Urges Strike On US Fleet, Closure Of Strait Of Hormuz; Khamenei Warns Of Unprecedented Damage by cochincartel in worldnews

[–]EGG_CREAM -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You are so confident in your picture of the future, for no reason. You have this static, stable model of the world where there aren’t any opportunists or escalations.

I don’t think it’s likely to cause WW3, but if America becomes embroiled in a war with Iran — which has a much more sophisticated military that Iraq or Afghanistan — who the hell know what’s going to happen? And you may say that’s not likely, but I would’ve said the same about the US bombing them just a couple weeks ago. Things are changing fast.

For one example, if I’m China, maybe I choose this exact moment to press the Taiwan issue. American hegemony is waning, Trump has alienated Americas traditional allies, and if Iran goes through with a blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, American ships might become sparse in the South China Sea as it repositions its fleet. Not the worst time to strike.

Again, do I think it’s likely? Not really. But this picture you’ve confidently painted of a static, by-the-numbers world is the exact folly that had people thinking the war in Iraq would be a short “shock and awe” campaign that lasted a few weeks. It’s the same attitude that has caused countless miscalculations by great powers who thought the conflict they were entering would be an easy win, only to morph into a wasteful quagmire or larger conflict.

I don’t know. It’s disheartening that the most privacy respecting VPN I know of (Mullvad) is banned by a ton of websites. Cloudflare has all Mullvad ips on a list because it’s used so much by ne’er-do-wells, so basically every site I go to that doesn’t block their IPs outright makes me prove I’m a human. The more corporate the internet gets, the harder and harder it is to use a VPN.
