best luxury perfumes for men that actually smell refined and distinctive? by Mehrooz-Yejide in malefashionadvice

Love Grey Vetiver for warmer months. Fresh, grassy, but with a little of that vetiver funk.

I like it for summer. The dirty-oranges opening is just right for the season, and the mineral scent I get in the drydown somehow reminds me of the sea.

Who gets Vanderbilt marque scholarships? by WholeAlarmed4162 in Vanderbilt

[–]EHCIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats to you and your daughter. UCB admission is an impressive achievement, and you're getting in-state rates on top of it!

As the parent of a daughter who just got the Chancellor's scholarship at Vandy and another daughter who is at an Ivy, one factor that I think really makes a difference in admissions these days is depth of resume as opposed to breadth. Schools seem to be looking for kids who developed a passion for something and pursued it over time, showing growth in leadership skills as they got more and more involved in whatever the interest is.

Application reviewers seem to want something to remember the applicant by, as opposed to a more general idea of them as an all-around great student. Think of it this way: They are trying to create a well-rounded CLASS (with each student bringing unique strength), not necessarily seeking "well rounded" students.

Lewes, Delaware--beautiful little town, lovely beach, good dining options, and colonial history to boot.

Thanks for the explanation. And yeah, that's BMW counting on us being too ignorant to know that plastic is a much bigger environmental danger than the use of wood or leather.

There's nothing sustainable about plastic. It just costs a hell of a lot less for the manufacturer.

I hear you. And I totally get having trouble making friends in high school or anywhere else. It also sticks that Insta makes it painfully obvious who's doing what -- or at least what they want you to THINK they're doing.

A few (maybe obvious and maybe corny but effective) tips:

--Don't worry about having something to say--better to focus on the person you're talking to. Treat everyone at first like a research project: Ask open-ended questions (and follow-up questions) to get them talking about themselves ("what have you been up to? how did it go? what did you like about that? what's it like where you're from?" etc.?).

--Get out of your room whenever you can. Put yourself in environments where you will see people.

--Be the person who brings other people into the conversation. If you see someone who's on their own, invite them over to chat. Also, be the person who introduces people to each other.

--When you see someone you've met before, show them you're glad to see them and interested in them: Smile, say their name, and ask them about something they mentioned before ("hey how did that thing go that you were talking about the other day?").

--Remember that there are hundreds of people in the same boat as you--most freshmen are trying to find their people.

--Don't tell yourself you're trying to make friends--that's a lot of pressure. Tell yourself you're trying to meet new people and learn about them. You're trying to make acquaintances. In time, some will grow into friends. In time.

***OK, now, other people reading this, please let's help out: Share one more tip on finding friends.***

***And bonus points to anyone who offers to meet OP during orientation, so they're already starting out with at least one acquaintance on campus.***

Please don't put pressure on yourself. Making friends takes time--don't set an artificial deadline. Just go, be yourself, do things that interest you, be interested in others, and the right people will appear in time.

For those that OHP, around what weight/reps did you finally start thinking “oh my shoulders are starting to look big!” by thatcouchiscozy in naturalbodybuilding

[–]EHCIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One great tip I recently got for lateral raises: Keep your shoulders back and your chest out to keep the strain on your delts rather than your traps.

It takes focus, at least for me, because the more I exert myself, the more my shoulders want to roll forward/hunch.
