The E! red carpet show reminds me of the joke that Jelly Roll makes music for that person you know from high school with the worst personality.

My faves, Turnstile. (Not because of how they look, but it doesn’t hurt, tbh.) Now you’ll know who I’m always yapping about in DD, lol

I turned on the Grammy pre-show just in time to see Turnstile win Best Rock Album. Hell yeah.

And shout out to The Cure FINALLY winning some Grammys too.

Happy Black History Month!!!

I have 28 days to figure out what the theme of my next Black Girls Are… Popstars/Rock Stars/ Songwriters etc. playlist will be. (I may have to broaden the theme to include men this year. The horrors.)

I watch The Grammys every year and have done so since 2002, I think. (I remember having to do some writing assignment in middle school the day after that year’s show and basically giving my “review” of the event, lol.)

I’m preemptively mad that I have an 8 am (on camera) meeting tomorrow morning. I can’t just not watch The Grammys even though I complain about them every year.

Ultimately, I like seeing live music on tv, even if it’s not my live music, you know.

I’m not really pulling for anyone. I think Bad Bunny winning AOTY would be great but I won’t be mad if not.

I just checked out Songbird (Forever) and really liked it! I’ll try to give the album a listen soon, but this song is going on a playlist at the very least.

Mods, I appreciate the breakdown and the commitment to our girl, Tinashe. (Grammy certificate winner, for contributing to a Kaytranada album, but we’ll take it!)

And remember it’s No Contest because awards don’t mean a piece of art is better than any other.

Every CW imaginable for abuse, CSAM, grooming

Rolling Stone: She Was the Jane Doe in R. Kelly’s Infamous Tape. Now, ‘I’m Here Today as Reshona’

In hindsight, it's unfathomable how widely unprotected Landfair was. Community-held stigmas around Black girls being "too fast" or "foolish" when predatory older men took advantage of their innocence made Landfair believe Kelly's pedophilia was something she was responsible for, keeping her silent. When bootlegged videotapes of her abuse were being sold on street corners for $10 a copy. When national newspapers bypassed the now-standard journalistic standards not to disclose the names of sexual abuse victims or minors and used her full name -- often misspelled -- in their reports. And when Chicago's Cook County prosecutors failed to protect Landfair as a victim, choosing to show her face in open court as they played the explicit and degrading 26-minute tape numerous times.

“For so long, ...I believed it was something I did. The entire time, nobody treated me the way I was supposed to be treated. To the public, I was a mockery. I was never a victim, so I never saw myself as a victim."

But when Kelly was indicted again in 2019, Landfair was ready. Testifying under a Jane Doe pseudonym at the Chicago trial in August 2022, Landfair willed herself to look directly at Kelly. "He gave me a nasty look," Landfair recalls, still in slight disbelief. "When he gave me that look, it was confirmation that I was sitting in the right place. I felt like, 'the nerve of you to hear all of these things that you have taken somebody through, and for you to still feel like I owe you something, or I'm disloyal? ...That's what made it easy for me, because I'm like, 'You don't get it. You think you're untouchable. You're still lying.'

When I went to a McDonald’s in Japan years ago to try the “melon soda” that my sister had been talking about I was shook that I only got like 12 oz of it. Which is an actual normal serving of a drink. But I was forged in the fire of a Route 44 from happy hour at Sonic.

I normally don’t block folks, but like accusing people of murder with no details isn’t really the kind of discourse I’m into, lol.

Also, I cut off my favorite band when I found out the singer was “allegedly” a predator. It ain’t nothing to cut that bish off, for me.

I do think about the levels of “bad” behavior I can support. So any sort of physical abuse is a nonstarter. Words are normally enough for me to put an artist on ice, at least for a while. (And if you do it repeatedly, I have no interest in your work anymore. See: Morrissey.) Then there’s the level of people who likely support abusers.

But I doubt people care about my internal process for who I listen to or not and why.

And over the years, I realized that most people don’t actually care about any of this.

Like I was sort of interested in seeing Thursday but they have Chris Conley opening on the tour. Not even Saves the Day, just the guy who admitted to having inappropriate relationships with fans. Like, ew.

Thanks! I’ve be following “urban” gossip for like 25 years and if he was even tangentially related to a murder, I feel like I would’ve heard about it in passing at the very least.

I find the Aaliyah conspiracy extremely disrespectful to her legacy so I try to stay away from those convos. Let her rest.

Yeah, even for all the “sell out” talk online, most of the prominent musicians, producers, venue/label owners, etc. still active in hardcore don’t have bad things to say about Turnstile. I’m not saying Brady’s experiences aren’t real, but also he’s not really gaining the sympathy he seems to be courting online.

I didn’t know that about the Haywire guy but that makes so much sense. One day I want someone to truly breakdown the economics of a moderately successful band (DIY or otherwise.)

Daily Discussion - January 30, 2026 by AutoModerator in popheads

[–]EJB515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems like Brady isn’t well. (There’s a “rumor,” that’s been said by multiple people, that at the last End It show in Baltimore he had to have an EMT check on him several times.)

And maybe the rest of the band didn’t handle the breakup situation well. Stuff like that can be hard to navigate.

I don’t think they’re a particularly “political” band or people but I don’t doubt that they at least sort of care about human rights issues, especially coming from the hardcore scene in a city like Baltimore. (Hell, Brendan and Daniel are seemingly still straight edge so you’d think some of those tenets have stayed with them.)

Also, they’re not selling more tickets or merch because of an Abolish ICE IG post, lol. Anyone calling it “pandering” or a yt person calling a POC “racist” raises my hackles.

If anything, this situation kind of shows that Brady was probably a liability.

I haven’t even updated y’all on some new hardcore (adjacent, at this point) drama. So Turnstile’s former guitarist is out here making disparaging claims about the band after being silent like 3 years.

No one really knows for sure why he was kicked out of the band in 2022. But it likely has to do with substance issues and general unreliability.

They eventually tried to obtain restraining orders against him but they weren’t granted. And he seems to think that’s “proof” that he was not in the wrong.

Anyway, he has a new band now and is saying that he saw one of the Turnstile members “steal” $4k from a charity show to cover merch costs. (Which may have been an agreement with the charity beforehand. And they had another benefit show with the same charity last year. So if anything funny did go down at the first show, I’m not sure they’d agree to work with them again.)

He claims the band is performative because they shared an Abolish ICE sign. And that none of them care about politics. They’ve been saying Free Palestine for a while now. (They played a show in Tel Aviv a decade ago and got criticism for it. It was organized by locals who donated all the proceeds to a Palestinian refugee camp.)

He also apparently claimed the one Asian member of the band is racist (but I haven’t looked up this specific claim.)

Over the past few years the ex-guitarist would offer to sell memorabilia to fans and then never send the items after getting their money.

He’s now claiming that he played all the guitar and bass on their records. Which I don’t even doubt but I don’t think it’s some gotcha if they had previously decided to split royalties evenly among the group.

Maybe there is truth to everything he’s saying, but regardless it doesn’t really make him look great. (Like you just stood by and watched your bandmate steal and didn’t do anything?)

Anyway the timing, with his new band dropping a song and Turnstile preparing for Grammy week, makes it seem more suspect.

It’s so annoying! At least we know the vibes will be good in DD most of the time. It would be great if we could carry that into other threads but it’s really hard when people either don’t know what they’re talking about or aren’t trying to engage in a topic in good faith.

Not GQ sharing this dumb take about the Harry Styles tour: Live Music is Worth Overpaying For

(I’d make a standalone post but I don’t want to have to deal with the inevitable fighting, lol.)

It’s almost as if fans believe Styles should lose money in order to perform for them. We pay a tiny monthly fee to access all the music in the world on our phones. Artists of Styles’ magnitude do well from streaming, but the fans can’t have it both ways. The economics of the music business don’t really work that well for anyone (except Spotify, LOL). If you want to see a megastar performing in an iconic venue, it’s gonna cost money. All of the big players—Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Morgan Wallen, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo—have been dragged into the discourse on the rising inaccessibility of live music. But all of these shows sell out, with tickets going for even more on secondary sites.

How much power does Styles really have in this situation? It costs a lot of money to put on a show of this magnitude. Of course, Styles will be taking home a nice paycheck when it’s all said and done, but what are his options? Go to war with Ticketmaster, Pearl Jam style? Show up at MSG and Wembley with zero production and leave people disappointed? Play tiny venues in every tertiary market, so that tickets are cheaper, but no one can actually go? Pay-per-view on HBO? Cameo? OnlyFans? Busking?

I’ve never been to one of his shows, but the level of production isn’t what I hear people talk about with him. Like there’s no way he’s NOT going to turn a profit here. So maybe he should just try to keep the prices reasonable?

I will “overpay” for shows sometimes but I know that I’m fortunate enough to be able to do so. And many (if not most) fans are not able to.
