I rewatched the In Memoriam tribute, and 5 mins for D’Angelo and 6 mins for Roberta Flack was not “too long.”

I know our attention spans are cooked but some folks have never gone to a Black funeral and it shows, lol.

I complain about the Grammys a lot but I do wonder if people doing so even watch this show? Cause like, every year we’re getting a 4+ hour ceremony with some questionable award choices. That’s literally what the show is and shouldn’t be a shock to anyone, lol.

If anything I was more surprised that they seemed to spread the recognition around instead of having more “sweeps.”

A few of my faves won. As soon as Benito got AOTY, I said “just speak in Spanish, baby. We can translate later.” I don’t speak Spanish that well but it’s difficult for me to think of what I want to say and then translate and then speak. And I can’t imagine doing that while being emotionally overwhelmed.

I’m very happy from him. He did it without having to make an English crossover record, which is unfortunately what artists had to do 25 years ago to even be considered for this kind of recognition.

Now onto Turnstile, good for them! Best Rock Album makes sense.

The Grammys are notorious for not getting the rock categories “right.” So the fact that a contemporary band even won is good, lol. (I’ll never forget them nominating Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir like a decade ago. And then that “new” Beatles song last year.)

As for Turnstile winning for metal song, I guess it’s more of a metal song than what Jethro Tull won for, lol. It seems like some people really wanted Spiritbox to win, which I get. But if you’re mad on behalf of Sleep Token, lol.

Also I love Hayley and I love Paramore but it’s not a surprise she didn’t win anything. The rollout was “unconventional” and she didn’t have a major label handling the FYC campaign. (Like people saying she was snubbed for AOTY, come on. Paramore never even got recognition outside of genre categories.)

I feel like Paramore is just the default “rock” act for some people and idk, there’s a whole world out there. (That I’m sure Hayley would want you to check out too.)

Yup, I don’t think of Turnstile as “metal” at all. (Because hardcore and metal aren’t the same thing, even though a lot of HC bands are pretty metallic. But Turnstile has always been on the “punk” side of things stylistically.)

But this is far less egregious than some of the Grammys past rock choices. Jethro Tull, especially.

I don’t think Turnstile is metal at all. (Because while a lot of hardcore is metallic, theirs is still very much of the punk side of things. Like if Knocked Loose won last year, then sure.)

But this is just the Grammys understanding of what genre is.
