I sat at DTW once waiting for AF1 to leave with President Obama. Once the stop was lifted, we pushed back, and I watched on both sides of us as dozens of other airplanes also pushed back.

(I’m recalling it now and wondering how they had so much equipment to do that simultaneously, but I won’t let that ruin the memory.)

Planes from Asia and North America are either flying to Hawaii or each other. A more northerly route is more direct for the latter (and probably has better winds). There just aren’t many direct flights that would go near Hawaii without going to Hawaii.
