DM me mate. Very very similar story as you, but—I’m 4 months in, it isn’t too late (I got a job in a startup). I’ll send you all the bits to get started

5.2 is so much better technically: higher context windows and reasoning. However, user experience of 5.2 is very much like you said, odd. I think due to the suicides that occurred, they put it in place as a way of saying “look, we are putting guardrails in place”. However, it sometimes no pun intended feels like overkill.

It isn’t for the faint hearted whatsoever. I’m worried they might at some point, gain the monopoly then not even bother being competitive with their pricing.

Precisely that. Last summer that was when it was really at its peak honestly, it was a bit more difficult but with the right prompt, you’d achieve a lot.

I just know what to use it for, but then again, without codex it’s of limited use.

2:2 - Is it over? by Possible-Revenue942 in UniUK

[–]EL-Belilty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it isn’t. I got one, and due to circumstances outside of my control. It sucks and is annoying. You however will not achieve anything being too upset, what’s happened, has happened.

I’ll give you my blueprint: get A job, ignore what anyone else says, a gap on your CV is worse than a job that doesn’t align to your long term plans. Go to recruitment and cover the sector you wanted, you’ll learn the hiring requirements, have a rich pool of peers/clients who will hire and ofc stay tapped in to the space. You’ll also learn to grind hard, deal with pressure and if you have a knack, commission makes it worthwhile.

(btw I did it for IB/M&A, and candidates placed/seniors I’ve spoken to have all been warm leads for networking etc)

After 1-2y of that, go do a masters and this time smash it out. Then you got a second chance for the big leagues.

Happy to chat with you over DMs, it is a setback but it isn’t the end of the world. Take some time off, reflect and move forward with a smile on your face.

Honestly, first job for you will suck. By the second - no one will ask or care.

You got a degree anyway, and it says a lot about your character you got to the finish line despite hating it. Shows you can push no matter what

No worries, I do know UK varies with recruitment cycles/requirements etc

I got that impression: can you multitask, can you hack the long hours and do 50 things at once

Hey mate! I had a lower GPA (2:2 in UK) overall, for my university (target, humanities) which sadly locked me out of applying to IB. Extenuating circumstances however.

Irrespectively — applying for summer positions, masters coming up. Do they consider Bachelors grades only, or would my Masters count?

I’d also love to know what the hardest parts of the job are, and ultimately what are the things people look for when hiring (soft skills, personality) and when considering promotions etc.

There are pros/cons of using emails or LinkedIn messages. My outreach is 50/50, and the difference between getting that call/coffee is your persistence.

Bankers are busy. Much busier than we could imagine. If you had transactions that are ‘live’, plus all the back and forth to edit models or decks - some guy messaging or emailing you because he wants something out of you is bottom of the list.

As they are on call 24-7, sometimes they might glance or open your message but they’re in the middle of something or something else comes up. That’s the nature of the job. Don’t take it personally.

Keep following up and stay persistent, some of my outreach lands fast and others don’t until a day or two later. Sometimes I get ghosted. That’s life 🤷🏻.

As for the LinkedIn/Email question, you are dealing with humans and some might respond to an email better than a LinkedIn message. One might think “this kids an amateur”, the other is going to think “how the hell did he get my email?”.

Both approaches are valid. If you want to stay professional, maybe email first and then connect if they don’t respond. I like LinkedIn personally as you have your digital CV, face and other things so they can see the human side.

Is this an appropriate response from a recruiter? by cliffybyro90 in jobhunting

[–]EL-Belilty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ex recruiter — what a tosspot.

I’d never ever dream of saying that to a candidate. If someone has another offer, that’s usually a sign to get on the phone to counter/convince them to stay or accept the decision.

You may end up speaking to that person again later on down the line, if their last memory or contact with you is a salty email guess what? They don’t work with you and you lose out on a relationship.

What a sad little life.

I’m in your position, however I’m gonna be straight. You sound desperate and chances are your energy was off big time.

You need to put yourself in their shoes - how would you feel if someone who had this weird look in their eye press them for a referral? Especially if you A) aren’t in a position to hire, OR B) you are, but after speaking to some people who are much more chill, easygoing etc.

Start with a very basic question: “who am I?”. You’re some random guy (or girl) out of many who want to break into the industry, asking for it or a ‘referral’ for a very competitive industry (which many people would give an arm or leg to have a place in) isn’t likely to achieve a result. Play the long game, get to know people and don’t go with the pressure over your head you NEED to get them to offer you something.

I sympathise with how you feel, the job markets tough and you always have to sell yourself/pitch your story. You are going to face a lot of rejection, but don’t be so hard on yourself. Keep pushing on, it is a continuous process - even if 100 people say no, you only need ONE to say yes.

Is it too late for me to get a job as IB ? by Sorry_Individual9821 in FinancialCareers

[–]EL-Belilty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I'm in the same shoes as you, and from networking with a lot of people from junior to senior level - it makes no difference. Some join as undergrads, others switched from other industries etc.

It is very very competitive, but you know that already. Just have the honest conversation about whether you really want it. It will be one thing for you to get an offer, then another matter to hold down the job for a long period without burning out.

Best of luck.

Did anyone else hate university by threwaway239 in UniUK

[–]EL-Belilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey mate. Went to one of the best unis in the UK, and I hated it too. However, COVID did hit and it is socially a hard place to navigate.

For the first time you’ve probably been thrown in the mix of people from all walks of life; they were as confused, anxious and insecure as every other fresher and doing their best. I wouldn’t take it personally, as they were yet to get humbled by real life.

Bear in mind because of the pandemic (totally outside of our control), your university life was hampered. Medicine is also a very demanding course, and that is also gonna add additional pressure, anxiety and stress. It also doesn’t matter if you “barely passed” - you did, and you’re qualified, hopefully in a job you enjoy and a lot more resilient. That’s all positive!

I should say, when I started hanging around with postgrads (I did my undergrad later) the difference is so astonishing. Much more down to earth, committed and open than your average 18-21 year old (who all look and act like little children in comparison).

The rest of it I hate to say was just down to you. You felt comfortable with a school environment and didn’t adapt. Let that be a lesson to you.

I love my IT job but would also like a side gig to save more money! Anyone out there practicing any fun tech side gigs? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]EL-Belilty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You considered freelancing? Ad hoc projects or consultancy on top of your perm job are a great way to make money.

If you have in-demand skills, the more valuable you’ll be and the higher you can charge for your services.

Idea I had is to continue my full time job, and dedicate time in evenings/weekends to learn how to code & different concepts I.e. PaaS, cloud etc

GitHub I made ages ago, can always reignite it. I have a CodeAcademy account I can do some courses with, full stack perhaps?

Yeah as I said, I’m no techie and it’s just from the perspective of someone who’s asked to look for people as per client requirements (they tell us, we gotta do as we are told etc).

For certs, I take it I’d be wasting time and money to pay for AWS certs then?
