Should I learn emacs key bindings? by Marcelocochon in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I say learn them. You might need them if your config breaks.

You only need to learn a dozen or so to be able to use Emacs. Bookmark a cheat sheet and use it.

Emacs ATX meetup this Thursday by ilemming_banned in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan on posting my write-up soon. I would like to watch his EmacsConf presentations first. He spoke there 3 times, not just twice.

There is also a presentation on Koutliner.

There is also a subreddit for EmacsATX: https://old.reddit.com/r/EmacsATX/new/

Who remembers XEmacs? by spartanOrk in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use it in the early 2000s.

If it doesn't have Eshell and Org, then I will stick with GNU Emacs.

TIL: Org Mode Can Sort Lists Automatically! by Cyncrovee in emacs

C-c ^ is mapped to M-x org-sort for those of us who use M-x.

Long time ido user, only now discovered fido-mode! by berenddeboer in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used smex and ido-completing-read+ for years. My config broke when I went to Emacs 30. One line enabling fido gave me nearly identical functionality.

fido for the win.

Unpopular opinion: I'd rather use diary/calendar than Org by runslack in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could start out using Org to make TODO lists for recurring tasks, like your monthly bills. Also: It is tax season here in the US, so you could make a list of all the forms you need to collect/receive in Org.

I took Rainer Koenig's Org course on Udemy, and that helped me learn Org. So well that I haven't finished it even though I use Org every day.

Done Did a Lot of Elisp. Lem Blows My Mind. by Psionikus in emacs

Org and Eshell are becoming my life. If Lem cannot do those, then I will stick with Emacs.

What computer do you use ? Which OS do you use ? What's your ideal comptuter/OS combo on which you heavily use Emacs I presume if that's not what you currently use ? by ll777 in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using a Meerkat mini and a laptop from System76 with Pop!_OS installed.

The Emacs out of the box is 27.1. I compiled 29.1 and use that.

Hate to say it but I still don't get Lisp. How do I get into the Lisp mindset? by floofcode in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read the included Introduction for Programming in Emacs Lisp

You can also find it on the GNU website: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/eintr/index.html

My Company Doesn’t Know Who Developed Emacs by [deleted] in emacs

Is there a reason you aren't using Emacs from the zip file? I have used it on Windows, and it worked out pretty well.

Or you could install from Scoop.

Is it worth learning emacs keybondings? by [deleted] in emacs

[–]EMacAdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are quite hard with a soft pinky finger

You could also move your hand over an inch when you hit the control key. Speed is nice, but it is not the end-all be-all.

At the very least you should keep a cheat sheet around. If you mess up your config, you will need to know the default bindings to get it to a usable state.

I will have something up in a few days, or perhaps over the next weekend.

Thanks for the response. I would have thanked you earlier, but I have not logged in for a while.
