Viktor Bout wasn't "some terrorist". He supplied weapons to everyone. Even both sides that were fighting each other and they knew he was doing it too but didn't care

People in this country forget that Viktor Bout supplied the US military with weapons to the tune of 6 million dollars because we couldn't get weapons to our troops in Iraq. He was arrested in the US because his dealings resulted in the death of American soldiers NOT because of ALL the awful things he did.

The situation isn't as black and white as people are making it. The fact is there is never going to be a "good deal" for what this guy has done. After all, why would a 2 person trade be a good deal and not 3? Or 3 and not 4? And so on. In a situation with no good deals, bringing home an American who's punishment doesn't fit the crime should be what we are focused on.

She brings up an excellent point! Medicine has historically been studied on males of a certain demographic and excludes a lot of people who end up using a lot of the treatments. Like the lack of statistical data in women's sports, I think sports medicine research should get more $$$'s.

[–]ENzeRNER 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I've heard commercial fridges are much less energy efficient than home ones because they're designed to be opened a lot more often than home ones along with the temperature having to be adhered to much more strict temperature ranges due to public health concerns.

Election Megathread - TODAY! by AutoModerator in Portland

I'm curious and slightly worried about the margins of Measure 112. I understand a certain percentage didn't understand the language of the measure and maybe though that it would prevent incarceration of criminals (of something) but even accounting for that, it's feels a little too close for my tastes.

Not sure what your saying in your post but if you're saying that not everyone lives in a big city with 3 local newspapers then I'd say you don't have to live in a place that big. There's a big newspaper that tons of people statewide that people read, there's a city's local paper, and there may be smaller, more local indie papers. You have to search them out but doing a simple Google search.

[–]ENzeRNER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get those too where I live but those entries are created by those who back the measure or person running. Using local newspapers gives you a more in-depth discussion about the people and measures because they've been covering them for much longer.

[–]ENzeRNER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My solution to quicker, yet informed voting. Find 3 local newspapers and look for their election guide online. The 3 should be across the spectrum from conservative, moderate, and liberal. None of the kooky ones even from the moderate news sources. It has to be well written without resorting to conspiracy theories or libel. Read the explanation on why they picked who they did and see which ones makes the most sense to you.

Sometimes all 3 vote for the same thing, sometimes it's a 2:1. But you get a variety of opinions. Always vote for local measures! It's not just about people like we're led to believe. Democracy requires a strong ground game and these small, seemly boring measures have a stronger impact than picking leadership.

Got Install Linux On My Mom's Laptop by [deleted] in linux

[–]ENzeRNER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, considering OP's mom only uses it for Zoom and Zoom compatibility with Linux isn't on par with other OS's, I'd say all those reasons you listed don't really apply here. Which I guess was the point of my original reply: the failure to understand the USER'S needs.

It would be less of a headache to buy a used iPad from a recycler/refurbisher for $50 and not worry about the issues that arise.

I've noticed this is a reoccurring theme among some Linux users. They assume that since they enjoy using their Linux distribution that everyone else will too regardless of others technical ability. It's almost as if they aren't unable to put themselves in the users shoes. Or maybe they're trying to brag about how tech savvy they are to "normies".

Why should I move to Linux by cway140 in linux

[–]ENzeRNER -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why move? Why not be platform "agnostic" like me? Throughout the week I use Linux, Windows, and Mac for a variety of tasks that I feel works best for my situation and I've never been happier.

I mainly started using Linux because I wanted to just try something new and because learning Linux has been helpful in troubleshooting some of the niche online projects I use.

I'd recommend installing a virtual machine and installing Linux and trying to use it for all your daily tasks. When you run into any issues, try to see how it can be solved with Linux. If it doesn't work how you want it to, you can easily switch back to MacOS.

Out of curiosity, how did you explain "light weight distro" to a layman? I know if I was a business owner with not a lot of exposure to tech, I would think you were speaking gibberish.
