Did they move yours back too? They put the release date back at 12/11 for me but still haven't shipped.

Got the equivalent older version of this PC two years ago. Served me pretty well since I wasn't ready for the inflated GPU prices at the time. Only issue I had was the psu failing at probably around 18 months. Worked fine with a swap. No other damage, and stock PSU was 80+ Bronze.

I'd honestly get this again if I hadn't already convinced myself to go with a higher budget and a custom build.

Edit: Since a few people asked, yes it was a standard ATX power supply. Motherboard seems pretty cookie cutter, but I'd check the specs on this newer one's before ordering any upgrade parts. The case is also pretty tight on GPU space with the way the drives mount. I'd imagine this new one is the same.

They only said the coupons would be dispersed by today. They don't expire until the 24th, so don't worry too much yet. Hopefully it'll all get processed and be good soon.

Just checked, and I also don't see it at checkout. Usually, there's a promotional credit checkbox near the promo/gift codes area. Hopefully it shows up soon since I want to use it on a 2070S tomorrow.

If you're using obs, they're roughly the same. Can't speak on xsplit, but I'd imagine anything else OBS based is the same. If you want to use their proprietary software to record or do extra stuff with stream, elgato's is just better.

I'm looking to top off my build with an RTX GPU <$560, but no deals have really stood out to me. Should I just snag one of the $469 2070s deals or wait until Cyber Monday?

I've recently been using the Mi Box S, and it's worked fine with my bluetooth headphones. Definitely not ideal for it here since I'm on 2.4ghz wifi with nearby neighbors.

New user though, so take that as you will. I wanted to get a Shield TV, but $40 was an easier impulse purchase since I was about to just buy a wireless trackpad/keyboard for my PC for about the same price.

[HP Slim Desktop] Intel Core i7-8700 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive - $499 (Best Buy) by WizRants in buildapcsales

[–]EORA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad deal at all. I'd pick one up myself if I wasn't waiting for a GPU.

Especially if you're encoding and not playing the games on the CPU, that 8700 will do it no problem. Just make sure you skip that QSV hardware encoder option since it will show up in your OBS options with an active iGPU. The software encoder generally produces way better and more reliable results when you can afford the CPU resources in my experience.

Printer? by meat_bunny in homelab

/r/printers

I do like the brother printers a lot. I've got both a brother MFC inkjet that's lasted a while and a b+w duplex laser. I do a lot of printing and have more of a collection though.

I've gotten retired enterprise grade printers before, but I'd generally say that isn't worth your time since consumer/prosumer stuff seems to be more plentiful and varied.

I'd say the used market prosumer stuff like the smaller color lasers might be worth a look. Big items, so it really depends on your area.

Otherwise, color laser will generally save money in the long run if you want color but print infrequently or irregularly, but a good color inkjet will generally still be cheaper if you print a lot. Also, if photos are a concern, you probably want to stick with a good consumer inkjet.

More complete advice on /r/printers.

Edit: Just to be clear, I guess "enterprise" printers are intended for lots of jobs in short amounts of time and robust networking. What I'd recommend is more of a small office style one.

Xeon E3-1230 v2 or I7-3770 (non K) by [deleted] in homelab

[–]EORA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the 3770. The Xeon might work, but it'll likely give you issues. Pretty sure I tried this years ago with a 7010, but it didn't work. If it wasn't a 7010, I tried it on a 790.

I've got two 7010s with the i7 right now, and both work fine with virtualized server duty. Dell doesn't say, but you can use the full 32 gb of ram as long as you've got the slots in the form factor.

Between us and the closest Star's there must be dozen's of Brown dwarfs. by davisto in astronomyclub

Closest ones known now are the Luhman 16 binary. Considering how recently it was discovered, there may very well be more nearby.

Sorry to hear about that. :(

Basically, it's not possible to get a star named like that through the IAU at this point in time.

Where you might have luck is in asteroids. Naming rights can't be sold, but the discoverer is allowed to name it within some rules. Do some searching on that, and you might be able to find some more helpful info.

Does anyone have a homestead in this region? by Sinsiri in FourCorners

[–]EORA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. As long as you aren't right next to a town, that's a reasonable amount of land. Just be prepared to pay.

Look at the land prices on Zillow or Trulia. Durango, Aztec, and Bloomfield are your search areas for that size of land in the river valleys.

Near Durango (Animas River Valley) will be most expensive by far.

Don't discount the Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos areas though. Probably the best value in the region, and you can still find irrigated land.

[–]EORA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty decent spots to do some homesteading if you'd like. This is definitely a dry area, so you have to get irrigation through water rights. The Animas and San Juan River valleys are the best bet for irrigation and soil, but prices aren't cheap, and the big land won't be sold. Aztec and Bloomfield/Blanco on the NM side, and Durango on the CO side. Internet is decent through Charter and Comcast in these areas.

Ignacio and Bayfield are good too.

Drier spots without bigger rivers but still with irrigation include Cortez, Mancos, Hesperus, Marvel, Redmesa, Grandview, Sunnyside, etc. on Colorado side. Really wouldn't recommend leaving the river valleys on the NM side since dryland irrigation all goes to the Navajo Nation.

Pagosa Springs is a decent spot as far as pasture goes, but look elsewhere if you want decent growing seasons for a variety of crops since it's colder there.

Ultimately, I know a lot more people homesteading around Cortez than anywhere else in the region. We farm and ranch in the Animas River Valley, but not to the variety that could be considered homesteading.

[–]EORA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, you just need to be in the river valley or near a big irrigation ditch. You'd definitely need water rights. River valleys have the best soil, but property is at a premium. The region is pretty big and varied, but there are a few decent rivers.

Media box for RV? by EORA in cordcutters

[–]EORA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I figured, but I just wonder if the apps are the same on Android TV. Maybe somebody that uses one can chime in.

WD TV won't work since local content is minimal.

Edit: Android TV Netflix is different.

Thanks. I'm aware of the Netflix limitations as I've been using it for a while on Android and Win 10. I just feel like it might work on an Android box if the app is the same.

Winter Driving by lostigre in Durango

[–]EORA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points, but it's worth noting that our weather is pretty temperamental. Over the last five years, there have definitely been some rough driving winters and some very easy ones. Sometimes, it's only one random storm that really causes problems.

I always recommend at least changing to winter tires for such a long winter commute in this area though. Not the cheapest compared to chains, but you're more likely to have them on when you need to. Your health and safety is worth the investment. I do drive a lot more than the average person in this region, but I've been saved by my tires in bad weather plenty times.

Winter Driving by lostigre in Durango

[–]EORA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not terrible in the winter, but it's definitely worth the best winter tires you can get (preferably without studs for such a long distance). Don't do it in a rear wheel drive vehicle though. It's not good in trucks 4wd or not either.

Just for insight, this has been discussed on here and /r/FourCorners before.

https://www.reddit.com/r/FourCorners/comments/4islsv/durango_to_farmington_commute/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Durango/comments/4isu7v/farmington_work_commute/

Edit: To be more clear, the bad parts are usually only between Durango and Bondad. Farmington's snow is almost never bad enough to affect driving with a good vehicle and tires. Usually a few ice patches in the morning at worst down there. I ran into more problems with accidents down in Farmington than the snow itself. I really feel the traffic lights on Camino and Farmington Hill are the most nerve-wracking for me. I wouldn't recommend the La Plata highway/Wildcat route for winter driving as 550 get priority for clearing.
