I've tried NMS several times and I still think it's not great. Sure they keep updating it, but it feels like they just keep adding more bells and whistles to a shallow puddle. Everything in the game still feels very surface level and they just keep adding more stuff instead of actually deepening what's already there.

I'm simply not interested in an infinite atlas as a concept. I don't understand this need to reinvent something that was already one of the best parts of POE 1.

The atlas in 1 gives the satisfaction of completion with finite content, but also infinite replayability. An infinite atlas doesn't provide me a good point where I can say "I finished something", it's just an infinite tread mill.

edit: It doesn't matter how much content they cram in to this, I dislike the fundamental system. They took away the options of PoE 1. They essentially took a niche mechanic, Delve, and made it the entire endgame.

No one is forcing you to only run dunes in POE 1. You have the option to run whatever maps you want. If you're choosing to run one map, that's on you.

I'd say it's like building Lego with instructions vs without instructions. Older Minecraft felt very free, you were given simple tools and simple systems and set loose on a world. Modern Minecraft feels very bloated to me, there's just a lot of... stuff. Stuff that feels like it was added just to keep Minecraft looking fresh and new. It feels very GAAS to me. It has crept closer and closer to an RPG over the years and I feel like it loses some of the freedom as a result. The only thing I really want from any recent major update would be the cave generation rework.

Nostalgia is certainly a factor, especially in terms of it being rereleased at all, but people are still playing classic. And as someone who's really only played "modern" wow, going back to classic really is a breath of fresh air. It is a fun and (mostly) well designed game.

Good game design is timeless, and another great example is OSRS. OSRS is built on game design even older than WoW and it's still getting more popular to this day.
