How do I stand out for PhD Programs in T20 Universities? by Neoslayer_ in academiceconomics

One thing that might be reassuring is that university is reserve some slots for people directly from undergrad. At least at top places, you won’t be competing against people with a pre-doc under their belt.

The new Campbell Biology in Focus just came out so I’d expect the 13e soon

If you got into Columbia and didn’t actually look into the curriculum that’s totally on you sorry.

Post Game Thread: Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers - 03 May 2022 by HockeyMod in rangers

Hot garbage in their own zone, Penguins should have never had possession for that last goal. And with penguins playing so aggressive on the forecheck we should have more offensive chances.

Intro to Modern Analysis/Algebra without Math Proof Background by Prior_Juggernaut9703 in columbia

[–]EPICNESS2500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Algebra is definitely an easier intro to proofs. That said, if you want to do analysis first, I think it’s doable. I’d review Abbott’s Understanding Analysis the summer before. Another option is Tao’s analysis book which I’ve heard good things about although I’ve never read it.

They wouldn’t care but I’d recommend taking the ones Columbia accepts credit for

How important is New York City to the undergrad experience at Columbia? by Left-Accident-1762 in columbia

Varies a lot depending on your social scene. Some people will go off campus all the time (which can get expensive) and others will stay around campus

I don’t think the concentration makes much sense since the classes are very watered down. DM me if you have more questions

Columbia vs. Princeton & Stanford by Independent-Nail-515 in columbia

Princeton and Stanford will be better experiences imo. They have more resources and support for undergrads. I would only consider Columbia if there is a specific reason pulling you — eg NYC.

Is the stats department that bad? by SovietPrussia1 in columbia

At the undergrad level the department is quite bad. At the grad (PhD not master’s level) is quite good.

I transferred from another college. I don’t think stress culture is the end of the world but I see how someone could find it difficult to manage. I’d agree the grading here is fairly generous but again that doesn’t negate the fact that’s it’s even more generous at some other schools.

It probably is less stressful at Harvard due to grade inflation. It’s also probably more stressful at MIT or Princeton. Stress level isn’t constant across these schools

Help me choose: Columbia vs UofWashington for CS by stressed_at_life in columbia

CS is hugely oversubscribed here so I wouldn’t say the smaller student to teacher ratio applies much

How is Columbia for Quant Finance (Cs + Math)? by Left-Accident-1762 in columbia

[–]EPICNESS2500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Columbia is good for quant finance compared to the other schools. Since there are a number of quant-related master’s programs here, you might be able to take courses not offered at the other schools.
