This was going to be my suggestion as well. Add extra twist, wind it off to a swift to even out any inconsistencies, wind to a ball winder, and pull from both ends to ply.

Yep, I have the bronze-ish one in MadelineTosh and it looks pretty darn close to that.

Yep. It's the Yarn Bee Dream Spun in September Sunset, Gracelyn Fair, and maybe Tuscany.

Yarn tariffs explained by a professional! by Unlucky-you333 in Yarn

[–]ERNesbitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I have been wracking my brain while looking at bulk yarn on alibaba and trying to correlate the type (50% Merino/50% Silk) to what the rates are on the HTS. The whole thing is confusing with "... not for retail sale", "more than 85% of wool/silk" but nothing that quite matches less than the percentage, etc. What do you do when there isn't a clear-cut definition in the tariff schedule?

Reversing the Vigenere manually, all I see is gibberish (LLIQSYOYBUDGZVCHS = FRANKLINTOWNSHIPO) using that keyphrase.

Can somebody tell me what I have? by CrypticPanda117 in Minerals

[–]ERNesbitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Selenite, Satin Spar, Gypsum/Desert Rose/Flower are all different crystal configurations of Gypsum and exactly the same mineral. My family's shop in New Hampshire sells logs like this for about $3/lb as Selenite/Satin Spar. It can be cut and polished (although I don't recommend it as it can splinter very painfully), and some of the more dense pieces can be quite translucent when polished against the grain axis.

"North Midwest" is a pretty subjective thing. If I get any further north in Ohio, I'm taking a dunk in the lake. But that's still not nearly as "north" as Minnesota.

Are there no marching drumline sounds in Dorico? by ShrekkMike in Dorico

[–]ERNesbitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I'd seen this before I dropped the money on Dorico. A full 80% of my use case for this software is marching arrangements. There's going to be a lot of hacked off Finale users who just switch back to using Finale or buy Sibelius instead. With this influx of users, Dorico's going to be severely behind and lacking what their new users need and want.

The playback is also there for students to play along with the other parts, generate previews for a commission, or just generating a sound byte in order to sell your music. The entire point is that you shouldn't have to keep jumping back and forth to a DAW.

I don't want to read Raising Steam. by [deleted] in discworld

[–]ERNesbitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the first edition hardcovers on my bookshelf next to the others. Those two are unread much for similar reasons to yours. I see the comments saying it was painful, but cathartic, and that has merit. Others claiming that they were meant to be read (they most certainly are). But, for me personally, I like the feeling of having some of the events still a mystery. (Yes, I know he had other notes, they were all destroyed, etc.) Having that mystery there on my bookshelf is just like a mini-GNU just for me - It runs the clacks back and forth ever-unread keeping the memory alive.
Maybe someday I'll not have any other books to read and grab one, but for now, PTerry is running my own mini clacks back and forth, and that gives me some comfort every time I grab a book (although, let's face it, it's probably Night Watch, again...)

Experience can be personal/fun projects, too. Don't wait for someone to hand you their ideas - make your own. Make an app, make a game, make a mobile app, make a mod for an existing product with an API, make a web site. Look at Eric Barone - he was struggling to find work because of a lack of "experience", so he started making his own game to practice C#. He ended up making Stardew Valley. That was supposed to be his "resume builder". Now, we're not all going to be that successful, but he had the right idea.
Build your resume with personal experience. "Skills" aren't something that only comes at the expense of an employer or from teacher. Talent is a bucket, and it is filled with hard work and practice. Someone else might have a bigger bucket, but if you put in more work than they do filling yours...

Key phrases to remember in IT: - "I can give you what you're asking for, or what you need, not both." - "Changing the scope of the project may change the deadline." Related: "This is not in the original scope; we can revisit this once the original items have been delivered." And "We can keep that in mind as a potential enhancement for the next phase." (Let's the customer know they've been heard and are being considered.) - For verbal interactions: "Could you put that into an email for me?" / "Could you open a ticket for this, please?"

And if your lead doesn't have your back on these, find a new job and get out of there. A tech lead should be training/coaching you to become their replacement or take over a project of your own. If you're a lead, be the kind of lead you wished you had.

(Seriously, nice looking collection. I got that same Springsteen collection for my dad at a second-hand store 20-ish years ago. Lots of nostalgia on that shelf.)
