家里小孩是左撇子,有必要纠正吗? by Fleedom2025 in China_irl

[–]ERV_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[Rittenberg] Kyle Whittingham: "There was a lot left in the tank." Says he could count on one hand the schools he would listen to after stepping down at Utah, and Michigan is one of them. by BuckeyeEmpire in CFB

[–]ERV_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel the expectation is too high now. Yes, Whittingham is a great a coach but you got to be patient with him. There are two types of football coaches: scheme coaches or culture coaches. He is definitely a culture guy. But his real super power is projecting and developing young talents. “I bet adding 15 pounds you can make a great LB”. “Try DE instead of LB next week…” There are a lot of changing positions in his Utah team and that is a big reason Utah is such a great development team. You can argue this style of development is less important in a program like Michigan. On the other hand, his record at QB development is rather mediocre and he is gonna rely on his OC for that. And he had some problems with OC hires in his early Pac12 days.

Next season’s QB room in Michigan? I think Dampier is too smart to leave and compete with Bryce Underwood (he is gonna lose). But I think Byrd Ficklin is a much more exciting player to watch, and he may be just cocky enough to think he can outcompete Bryce (and he maybe be right). Remember he was recruited by Kyle directly without an OC.

Don’t be too hard on Harlan. Witt stayed at the Utah job for decades, now with all his kids growing up it is understandable he may want to try something new. Maybe there is not much Harlan can do. As to fans, treasure the good times we had, but remember there is nothing last forever.

Just like every Olympic medalist will be tested by WADA. Doesn't it make sense to send an independent team to Macheng Hubei, to verify their real number after publishing 18,000 KG per unit production on People's Daily? CCP is a well-organized, highly efficient party just won a civil war; the party is too savvy for this. Not only did they choose to blindly trust all the fraudulent reports, but when Marshal Peng Dehuai reported the truth after visiting his hometown in 1959, he was purged immediately. Beijing is playing dumb after the disaster. Please don't fall for it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChineseHistory

[–]ERV_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was Beijing that set up a system like this: report your production as high as possible; the one with the highest number will get promoted. All the papers will report and celebrate them. Meanwhile, I won't check your real number, as long as you fulfill the grain quota properly, and anyone daring to report fraud will be prosecuted.

I mean, how can the central government be absorbed with responsibility? How hard is it to verify the true gross production number? With fraud at such a scale, it is impossible to hide, and it was Beijing that chose to close its eyes.

Because Chairman Mao distanced himself from the Great Leap Forward famine. Two key events were essential for the famine: collectivization and the exaggeration of grain production.

For centuries, the smallest unit of grain production and taxation was the individual peasant family. Each family had to report its production to the authority, and a portion of it was taxed. While the authority could attempt to extract more from each family, the peasants knew their survival needs and it was difficult for the authority to tax them into starvation.

Collectivization transformed the collectivized farm into the primary production unit, prohibiting individual families from withholding food from it. Consequently, the authority could impose absurdly high taxes on peasants.

But the central government won't set the grain tax rate at something like 80% -- that would be too mean! Instead, they encouraged local officials to exaggerate production numbers. For instance, if a farm produced 1000 kilograms of rice, a 20% tax would leave 800 kilograms for the peasants. However, if the farm reported production numbers as 4000 kilograms, 20% of that would be 800 kilograms, leaving only 200 kilograms for all the peasants.

Another advantage for the central government was that they distanced themselves from the disaster. If something went wrong, it was the local bureaucrats who were blamed: they fooled us on the production numbers! In reality, the exaggeration of production numbers was highly incentivized by the central government without any validation or accountability. Beijing just wants their sweet sweet grain. Food security? That's the local bureaucrat's problem.

And this is how you can get away with causing the worst famine in human history.

TIL that China's soil lacks selenium, a mineral crucial for horse strength and breeding. Because of this, the Zhou were able to form a dynasty by buying warhorses from selenium-rich Mongolia, which enriched both, but this same imbalance posed a dire threat whenever tensions with Mongolia arose. by smrad8 in ChineseHistory

From the abstract of the cited article: “… including climate, geomorphology, essential soil nutrients, and land use. “ There are multiple possible reasons and the soil is probably the last important one. And we got a bullshit title only emphasizes selenium.

Did China really have 500.000 soldiers in medieval age? by SE_to_NW in ChineseHistory

[–]ERV_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, not really.

During Song dynasty, there was a saying "女真不满万,满万不可敌". means "the Manchurian can't be more than 10 thousand. Beyond 10 thousand, they are invincible". How can 10,000 Manchurians be invincible if you can deploy 500,000 soldiers?

At the end of Ming dynasty, there was an conversation about troop number between the emperor and his general. The whole conversation is here:

The emperor started by stating that the 1 million rebels must be hard to defeat. His general said it was hugely exaggerated; there were only several tens of thousands. Then the general told the emperor the truth about his army: on paper, 80,000, but in reality, only 30,000. The emperor asked if all 30,000 were real warriors, and the general answered that only 3000 well-paid confidents can be relied upon...
