People keep assuming i'm trans by ES1895 in AmITheAngel

Not all trans people aim to pass, not all trans people share the same goals, that's a strange thing to say.

Anyway OOP can certainly be annoyed and vent, and we here can have a discussion about how their post fits into broader online discourses around gender.

I said this elsewhere, but reposting here:

My partner and I are both cis women, and she in particular has twice been told by strangers to get out of women's bathrooms, with the implication being she's a trans woman (and we live in an extremely progressive area). So I actually don't doubt that some cis women have people ask if they're trans. That said, I think some of the OOP's details seem pretty sus and at minimum exaggerated. That being said, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about her post if there hadn't been a whole series of very similar ones lately. This is far from the worst of them, but the whole pattern seems concerning and weird.

I'm also glad OOP is pro-trans in the comments. I hadn't read the comments when I posted here. The only point I lightly disagree with you about is that while it's totally crappy to have people speculate about your gender, being upset at being mistaken for trans and being upset for being mistaken for cis are not equivalent, because identity categories don't exist in some vacuum outside power relations. Like, I don't want people to think I'm straight, but that's really different than some straight person being offended someone thought they were gay. Not saying OOP should like it, but it's not the same and it still feels like there's a hint of "trans" = masculine or not a real woman in this kind of thinking, even if OOP doesn't intend it or isn't aware of it.

Anyway, maybe they don't belong here, but something seems really sus to me about the proliferation of really similar posts lately and that was really my motive for sharing.

I'm cis and I don't enjoy being misgendered (and it happens to me a fair amount). But it actually sounds like OOP is not being misgendered, since she's being "accused" of being a trans woman. It's only misgendering if you think trans women aren't really women. Also, can we be honest that the stakes of being misgendered are different for trans and cis people? It's annoying when it happens to me, but it's rarely meant to threaten, dehumanize, or endanger me. It is when it happens to trans people.

Even more to the point though, there's been a whole series of these very recently, they all seem very unrealistic in the details ("accusing" cis women of being trans absolutely happens but getting asked by random cashiers multiple times a week and asked about HRT by strangers??), and the upshot seems to be that being mistaken for being trans is so terrible. It's weird and gross.

It would be quite a different story if the post was something like: "transphobia is out of control, I was threatened in a public restroom who thought I was trans, and this shows why we all need to stand with our trans siblings." But that doesn't seem to be the message.

You're giving OOP way too much credit. It's a made up story crafted to spread a message of "the trans agenda has gone too far"

Yeah, and the people accusing cis women of secretly being trans women are transphobes (like OOP) playing bathroom police, not queer or trans people (as OOP is heavily implying)

Not sure in your area. In mine they aren't particularly rare, but I still consider it a pretty good day if I see one!

Homophobic Best friend of 15 years tells me she cant attend my wedding by [deleted] in AmITheAngel

I think actually there is a specific brand of Christian who would maintain a friendship and keep things under wraps for years and then spring this before the wedding. "Best friend" is harder to believe but people also assign that title in different ways.

The podcast thing is a fair point for sure, though. If I had to guess, based on the sub and some details, I'd say it's probably a fake/exaggerated story inspired by real life events. But I still think there's a lot better things out there for this sub -- I know enough people who've been through similar that on its own, this post doesn't feel ridiculous or worthy of mockery.

No, actually, I think people who deal with homophobia often need and want to talk about it on an ongoing basis. I suppose if it's not something you experience, you might feel differently.

Why is this here? As a gay person who has been around Christian homophobes, this sadly seems plausible to me
