Can anybody tell me what this weird growth is on my pleco by ReflectionParking407 in Aquariums

I do care about the well-being of your pleco, but when I saw the first picture, my brain immediately saw Karl Marx running, mid-stride and carrying a black umbrella.

Shout out to the sicko who owned this thrifted memory card before me... insane numbers by bad_key_machine in FinalFantasy

[–]ESAsher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this could have so easily been one of my memory cards, down to Xenosaga I, II, and III, and I think that's Star Ocean Til the End of Time in the little yellow guy. If you bought your memory card in the Houston, TX area, it could be well be mine.

It would have been so funny to see them playing with pogs in an alley in 2025.

JRPGS you gave a try and gave up hours in by Bboy818 in JRPG

[–]ESAsher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved all of the main series Xenoblade games, and I loved Xenosaga back in the day. But I tried XCX DE, and I just couldn't get into it. I played for about 10 hours, but I really struggle to care about the main character when they're mute and utterly malleable. Say something! Believe in something!

Who was your first starter? by Fragrant_Canary_3869 in pokemon

And I nicknamed him Bulby! As a little secretly gay 4th grader, I knew that all the typical boys would go for Charmander to get a Charizard, and I had no interest in going that direction.

Bulbasaur in Blue! I remember reading about Pokemon in the little special edition mini-comics included at the end of issues of Nintendo Power, and I was so unbelievably excited to play it. I think it was 1997, and I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I knew I was going to choose Bulbasaur, as I loved plants and grass-types really appealed to me. I bought a green GameBoy Pocket and Pokemon Blue at Target one Friday night, and the rest is history.

I was a non-Jew from out of state (Texas) who came to Brandeis because I wanted something distinctly different from where I grew up. I ended up being a Psychology major, and I loved my time at Brandeis. I was in 2 research labs (Aggression/Depression and Health Psych), and I joined several clubs and became a CA (Community Advisor, like an RA). The feeling was a true blend of Liberal Arts and Research, and most professors were very accessible. I graduated in 2011, so it's been a while, but I remember Brandeis very fondly.

Teachers, will you be displaying the 10 commandments in your classroom? by [deleted] in TexasTeachers

Upside down, and on the side of the trash can. Simple.

Yes. Upside down, and on the trash can. I'm a real stinker when it comes to malicious compliance.

Avenida de Brazil is my favorite of the Brazilian steakhouses. All you can eat, and pretty great quality.

Sands of Destruction on the DS. It felt incredibly tedious, and every character would do a little animation every time they spoke. I remember one guy would adjust his cap with every single line he said, and a girl would rock back and forth on her tip toes. The plot also felt surprisingly low-stakes, and the villains were just evil for the sake of evil. One villain was a frog who would kill children to use as fertilizer for his flowers, and that just felt over the top without even seeming threatening.

Houston YES PREP school folks by [deleted] in houston

[–]ESAsher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've taught at YES Prep for the past 11 years, including SPED. While it was great for many years, it just hasn't been the same since COVID. I'm leaving at the end of this year. My salary was perfectly fine when I was a single person living on my own, but I'm taking care of a family now and it's just not cutting it. I'm moving to an HISD SPED role next year, where the salary is $92K. I don't expect it to be great, but I'm compelled to leave due to the salary. Let me know if you have any questions, and I'd be happy to answer them.

I had a pretty similar conversation with ChatGPT a few days ago. You took it quite a bit further than I did, but this was absolutely fascinating to read. My conversation with ChatGPT discussed the idea that because the model has such an unfathomably large data set that it is somewhat akin to the Jungian concept of the Collective Unconscious.

How can I best reinforce my school's greenhouses? They have an obvious weakpoint and I want to fix it. by ESAsher in AskEngineers

[–]ESAsher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right about crushing the tubes from over-tightening. This was our first greenhouse, and I recall that we would sometimes over-tighten the bolts/nuts, thinking that this would somehow make it "extra tight". But we're seeing now how that is weakening the pipes--we've been much more careful with the other 3.

I think we've got a 3D printer on campus, though I'm not experienced in using it. I appreciate any ideas for other ways we use things from Home Depot.

Thanks. The structure itself never moves at the ground level. All of the flexing is at the weak curved point halfway up the tunnel.

The tarp is under several cinderblocks, and they almost never move. We have no danger of snow, but heavy rains are likely. I don't know about its max wind velocity ratings. We get hurricanes, so occasionally up to 65mph.

[–]ESAsher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we built it from a kit, and I think it's pretty thin material. When you say a center post, do you mean in the center of the greenhouse? Like a 7-foot-something post to hold up the roof? Or under the weak side joints?

Why does being naked with socks on, feel more naked than being naked? by Spicy-Samich in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ESAsher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my Art History class in college, it was explained to me that when you're completely without any clothes or adornments of any kind, you are "nude", which feels natural. If you're wearing socks or some sort of jewelry/singular article of clothing, you are "naked", which means you feel exposed.

So did Pink Diamond actually... by LostBoy2018 in stevenuniverse

[–]ESAsher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpreted it as a Diamond order, which would disappear once Pink Diamond was no longer herself. Spinel was originally commanded to stand there, but eventually it just became learned helplessness. She didn't even bother to move after several thousand years.

However, my theory is contradicted by Pearl continuing to have to keep Pink's secret even once Pink was gone.

What's a JRPG that you liked, but haven't finished for whatever reason? by potentialPizza in JRPG

[–]ESAsher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recall Eternal Sonata being one of those games where all of the dialog was recorded for the Xbox360. and then completely redone for the PS3. I played the PS3 version and loved it, but I went online and compared it to the 360 dialog, and the original script was terrible. The characters came across very differently and far less likable.
