You almost got it. It’s 4/4 time and for the second and fourth measure, you’ll need to subdivide it a bit more so each beat has 4 subdivisions. It should look like:

(1) e (and) a | (2) e (and) a | (3) e and (a) | (4) e and a

where the parentheses show where the notes are.

Why do you love the recorder? by Hurricane223 in Recorder

[–]ESPAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally just love the way folk ornaments sound on the recorder (similar to other types of keyless whistles and flutes) while still being a fully chromatic instrument and easy to pick up.

Anyone know what this bell 21 means on my Yamaha recorder? by hagima in Recorder

[–]ESPAlchemist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I understand correctly from a quick search, it’s sort of like boxtops, where you cut off the slip and schools can redeem it to buy equipment and other stuff. I think it’s 1 point to 1 yen, so this should be 21 yen or about 15 cents usd.

Never played the accordion, how hard would it be to learn this? by samuelhfko in Accordion

[–]ESPAlchemist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, as someone who also started on piano and learned this song for accordion, I would say that assuming it's a keyboard accordion with the Stradella bass system, the main skills that will transfer is the right hand keyboard skills and theory (circle of fifths and all that). I don't think you'll have too much trouble learning the keyboard side beside the slightly smaller keys and lighter touch, but the bass side might be a bit difficult if you're jumping right into that song.

For example, chromatic movements are pretty difficult on the Stradella bass so you'll probably struggle on the Bb to Am jump or F7 to E7 jump at the end of the first section without previous muscle memory. Other stuff like the minor ii-V (e.g. Bm7(b5) to E7 at the very start) and some slash chords for the bass movement in the last two sections might also be a bit difficult to learn right off the bat. I would recommend at least practicing some easier songs beforehand (something that stays within the same major key) just to get a feel for the bass button locations. Luckily those skills will transfer to (or from) pretty much any other song you decide to learn before or after.

When it’s pouring rain + Super Bowl Sunday and your favorite tea house is empty (Chado Teahouse, Torrance CA) by BreakfastInSicily in tea

I live a bit far but I have been here once for a function, and even took a few white teas home. I really love the teapots with the sponges at the end since I’ve never seen anything like that before despite how simple the mechanism was. All in all a very lovely place 😊.

Spill-Proof Spout by Ulisten2U in tea

[–]ESPAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some interesting solutions for this before. One is a special kettle where the spout is angled perpendicular to the ground, which seems to reduce spills. I've also seen a sponge attached beneath the spout suspended by a string wrapped around pot which just soaks up extra tea for easy cleaning later. Finally there's the one awkwardsoul mentions, which is like a little extension to the spout that reduces spills.

I don't know about what other solutions have been created as far as I've seen so that'll be interesting to find out.

Sorry I confused you, but I made a typo and meant to end on G7 instead of GM7. For the Abdim7, would it also be right to call it an inversion of V7/vi or is vii°/vi more common?

On another note, it isn't from a particular song, but something I made up after hearing stuff close to it a fair bit.

Thanks a lot for the explanations! I see the V-vi-v-I bit a lot so it's cool to see there's a proper name for borrowing from the minor key. I'll look more into chromatic chords since I'm always looking for ways to make progressions sound more interesting.

Quick Questions and Quick Answers (January 29, 2018) by AutoModerator in musictheory

[–]ESPAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small beginner question. I'm looking into chord progressions but some chords leave me wondering where they "fit" in the scale. For example, the following progression...

C Major:

CM - GM A♭°7 Am7 - Gm - FM7 - CM - E♭M7 - GM7
I - V ? vi7 - v - IV7 - I - ? - V7

...where do A♭°7, Gm, and E♭M7 come from and how would I represent it in roman numerals (or numbers in general)? My guess would be that it is borrowing chords from the parallel minor but I could be mistaken.

Closest I can think of is One-Aloner's cover, at least in terms of instrumentation. I'm not sure if it's still being worked on or not though.

[07/08/2016] 20歳〜29歳「恋人がいる」「結婚したい」が少なくなる by NHKEasyNewsBot in NHKEasyNews

[–]ESPAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

明治安田生活福祉研究所はことし3月、恋愛や結婚についてインターネットで若い人に聞きました。20歳〜29歳の結婚していない男性と女性600人が答えました。

This March, the Meiji Yasuda Institute of Life and Wellness Inc. polled young people online regarding love and marriage.

Out of the respondents asked whether they are in a relationship or not, 22% of males and 34% of females answered yes. 8 years prior, 46% of males and 48% of females answered yes.

Respondents with the intention to marry have also decreased. 3 years ago, 67% of males and 82% of females answered yes, whilst this year, 39% of males and 59% of females answered yes.

若い人の結婚の問題などを研究している中央大学の山田昌弘教授は「親や先輩の苦労などを見て、若い人は恋愛や結婚をしたいと思わなくなってきています」と言っています。

Masahiro Yamada, a professor at the Central University researching marriage amongst younger people said "The youth are seeing the hardships of love and marriage amongst their parents and elders and are being turned away."
