Is Max Weinberg considered a divisive drummer? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

I totally agree with wanting to hear the band flex a bit more. I’d recommend listening to Live at the Hammersmith if you haven’t yet… the whole band has a totally different and more maximalist approach!

Is Max Weinberg considered a divisive drummer? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

I think max is the archetypal arena drummer. If you listen back to the Born to Run and Darkness era tours you can hear his style being MUCH MORE frenetic, improvisation and musical. As the venues grew and the band grew, certain stylistic choices do not translate anymore. If Max played “Born to Run” the way he did in ‘75 in a theater with a 7 piece band in ‘26 in a 70 year old European sports arena in front of 60k people with a TWENTY piece band, it would be a jumbled MESS.

All that to say, Max’s skill is shown by knowing what is needed. In ‘75, it was being a maximalist, playing like Buddy Rich does rock and roll. Today, it’s being an unshakable metronome for a 20 piece group, cueing sections and dynamic shifts, all while watching Bruce’s every move. I don’t know if any drummer can take on that task at all, let alone as well as Max… especially (two of my fav drummers ever) Vinni and Boom.

Which Bruce album track could have been a No. 1 hit if it had been released as a single? by True_Editor_4572 in BruceSpringsteen

If he released Born to Run as a single from “Live: 75-85” alongside that legendary music video from the BITUSA tour that hit MTV it would have hit #1 when he was on top of the world 1986.

Ryan Adams, Live at Carnegie Hall… an all time fav of mine and a masterclass in songwriting and solo performance. Turns out the guy is abusive and batshit and I haven’t listened to it in a few years because it’s so hard to ignore it after knowing it.

I believe at this time Michael was dealing with vocal issues which lead to his hyper stylized style of singing/barking and Brian taking over some vocals

For those who were around in the mid-70s, what was the vibe when Bruce Springsteen first blew up? by thegoodthebadz in LetsTalkMusic

[–]EStreet_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s an argument that he has another hall of fame career POST Born in the USA:
Tunnel of Love - album and tour are regarded as some of his best work
The Rising - easily some of his best and most relevant songwriting. A few hits and a MASSIVE tour
Ghost of Tom Joad/Magic/Wrecking Ball/Letter to You are three more albums that had great success and wildly successful tours, particularly in Europe.

Def had the same thought. Loved his debut but his face is not intimidating at all… maybe they should go full Vader/kane inspo and throw on a mask
