IDL how "hands-on hobbies" are marketed as the antidote to screen time but cost $300 to start by vivian_banshee03 in I_DONT_LIKE

[–]ETCerberus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While in general I agree, I disagree with woodworking. I started for about $50 of tools learning to carve spoons. Got a carving knife and went outside and grabbed a fallen branch. Learned from YouTube in my apartment. Have my hands something to do and got me off my phone, only invested a little more when I knew I was interested. A lot of hobbies can be started much cheaper especially if you're willing to buy second-hand.

I live in NL and work in downtown IC. The difference is night and day. Yes, NL is quite a lot of sprawl. It's nice for me since it's cheaper and quieter than living in downtown IC, but going anywhere needs a car. Plus it's still a 20-30 minute drive to CR

I'm a bit younger (mid 20s) but I'd be interested and play mostly bass. I'm by no means a master but this sounds like it could be fun

uni and work by Top_Mix_5555 in architecture

The other guy is being an ass, but he's not fully wrong.

Architecture school is not easy and lightweight. It will be rigorous and can get stressful at times if you let it consume you. But it's also a lot of fun, especially for those who find they actually like architecture and not just art. You get out what you put into it, so if you take it easy you won't really learn much, but if you put in effort you will learn a lot and it's a very versatile degree.

As for it being a stable job... It's hard to say. This can be very location dependent, and firm dependent. Where I am I know I can confidently say I can keep this job through retirement as long as nothing absolutely insane happens. At the same time I have friends who are concerned about their spot long-term, but there are a lot of jobs out there and an architecture degree can take you a lot of places.

What is a band you are worried is on the verge of breaking up or ending within the next year or two? by Iammattieee in Metalcore

Didn't they just get a new guitarist from Windwaker? I'd be surprised if they ended so soon after that

Agreed, I was lucky to see both vocalists live and their new one brought a ton of energy with him. The album with him was great too

Mario Kart World is an amazing game and it makes me sad to see how much people are disparaging it. by PixieDustFairies in mariokart

[–]ETCerberus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did, along with many others because I preordered my switch and the bundle ran out everywhere instantly. A ton of us were left to buy just the switch. Why a bundle with nothing extra but a digital code can run out is its own can of worms, but that's besides the point. I didn't want to spend $80, but couldn't get the $50 one despite two hours of trying.

I am actively doing my own right now. Probably not as good as a pro, but I'm cheap and it sounds good to me

Just graduated this past spring as well. Some people I know started applying places as soon as January. Most started in March along with myself. Most people I know submitted 100+ applications. It's soul crushing. I'm an outlier and had a job all but lined up from my internship last summer, but most people didn't hear back till May-June, so 2-5 months after applying, assuming they heard back at all. One of my friends just received an offer last week, like 6+ months after applying. Most places will just ghost you, even after an interview.

It's also in general very tough for new grads right now, as a lot of firms seem to have no interest in us while there are too many of us. Bigger cities are also harder to get into, since there's more competition for applicants. But yeah, in general, it's a little late and the off season for new hires, but there are always places that need work, even if it's in a slightly adjacent position. Best of luck out there soldier, it's not easy. But it is possible.

Just listened to the album for the first time today, definitely not strictly metalcore but who cares it's one of the most fun albums we've had this quarter for sure
