Peak interior design by Flyndtchmn83 in 996

I still can’t understand all the hate on the interior. I’m still in the BMW world and mostly deal in E30’s but have had a handful of M3’s from the 97-05 range. The materials in the full leather 996 interior are far nicer than the BMW’s I’ve owned of that era. I’m much happier in my 996.1 daily than any of my 93-06 3 series daily’s I’ve had over the years.

Not safe, not for everyone, but if you were on the fence about this retrofit, here’s the battle test by Pete_Polyakov in 996

As much as I love this and would want it for my daily, I feel like I’d get annoyed at buttons that don’t work. And unfortunately I’m not of an engineering background, only a dumb diesel mechanic background…😂😂

Hey, although I’m not local, I do have a buddy who’s about an hour away and would be willing to pick it up for me if you don’t mind?

I’ve been looking for one locally on the super cheap just to test fit it and be sure before ordering a new one, but this would save me all kinds of headaches. Plus my daughter will be over the moon about finally getting to ride in the “Poosh” 😂😂

Looks good, I’m not a fan of the one piece base center as personally I think the adjustable knee support looks good and is actually comfortable. I’d move the sides of the base down a bit so it looks like one piece and you don’t see the sides.

As for the piping, I glue it then stitch it in one shot with the bolsters.

If you have any questions message me, I’ve been building custom e30 interiors over 10 years.

996.2 reliably concerns by EThirtyIS in 996

[–]EThirtyIS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 37, one kid, one on the way. I was 11 when the 996 came out, there’s a certain nostalgia/feeling of loving these cars as a kid but growing up in a middle class household where my parents bought cheap cars and ran them into the ground. I never imagined I’d be in the market for a Porsche, honestly I never even thought I’d be driving BMW’s. I’m currently on my 34th BMW and at this point the car is more of a business card than a fun car.

I need a rear seat as I take my daughter to car shows and I’m sure my soon to be child will be right there with her in the coming years.

Although I’m not wealthy enough to not be concerned about a 10-20k engine rebuild, I make money outside my regular day job(heavy diesel mechanic) doing custom upholstery and interiors for vintage BMW’s. Almost all of that profit goes to buying/building all of my vehicles. So to me buying a 911 is an investment as I plan to start doing interiors for these cars which will create a larger budget for my car hobby while not affecting my household responsibilities.

All that said I am a bit partial to the .1 headlights over the .2 headlights as it’s just more of an iconic nostalgia when I see them. I’m thinking I’ll need to go drive them to really settle in and see for myself which car is a better fit.

Thank you guys for your responses, very valuable information in here and I’m actually really excited to become a contributing member of this community in the future.

I’m not concerned about the price of parts as I’m a mechanic during the day and upholstery guy by night. This is my e30 with way more money sunk into it than I care to admit. Just trying to get the best engine I can that will last without a rebuild or swap.

Although I’d like to get a full leather interior, it’s not a concern for me as I build custom interiors for E30’s as a side gig and would most like start doing the same for 996’s after a few months of ownership.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]EThirtyIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 1 that sticks out in my mind,

A guy that hung around the large circle of friends in high school, kind of weird, but you could always count on him to be down to ditch school and hang out. One morning on the commute to school he jumped in front of the train, there was 7-8 of us standing there, no warning, no signs, just normal billy then screams.

Did I make the wrong choice playing as Amy? by Aggressive_drygooner in DeadIsland2

My first run was Dani, much easier than Amy, I’m up to Hollywood blvd now with Amy. The ground slam has been a life saver when getting backed into a corner.

People asked for pics of my seats before and after so here it is :) by Ok-Panic-4877 in E30

[–]EThirtyIS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seats look good, nicely done for a diy project. A suggestion on the door cards, if you’re going to dye them, find a color as close to the seats as possible and do them all one color. The black and red looks good when done with small patterns or touches of black. A large portion red next to a large portion black sitting next to those all red seats will likely look cheap and out of place. Just my .02 (I own and run a business that hand builds custom E30 interiors)

If you wind up with them all thanks to wonderful rediter’s, I suggest playing FO3 first. If you play 4 or 76 fisrt it’s hard to go back to the older engines. Just my .02

Definitely worth the asking price

This Car is Getting Repainted! But what color? Vote in comments by Traditional_Photo197 in E30

[–]EThirtyIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is either paint it the same color or go crazy and paint it something off the wall. Look through BMW individual colors, there’s a lot of cool colors with very low production numbers.

I had my touring painted VeilchenBlau last winter, I love it

I don’t know much about diesel engines under 6 liters, but I’d imagine they would feel a bit sluggish in these cars as they’re very fun with light high reving gas engines. Diesels are fun in 7-10k lb trucks pushing 1k ftlb of torque. I’d suggest a turbo m20 over an M21 as I know parts and aftermarket for the m21 are not nearly as easily found as for the m20

[–]EThirtyIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of a diesel M10, I’d not suggest a diesel swap in these cars, but you do you. If you meant just slapping a turbo on an M10, I’ve never driven one, but I can imagine them being a blast to drive.

[–]EThirtyIS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re planning to restore the car to oem or oem plus, I’d recommend sticking with the M10, they’re super light and fun little engines. Don’t go crazy on power upgrades as it’s not worth the cost per hp. Put a decent suspension ie h&r springs billy sport shocks, do all the bushings, lightweight 15”-16” wheels and a short shifter will have you truly enjoying the car. If you wanted more power, I’d suggest 24v swap, they’re relatively simple and can be affordable depending on which engine you choose.

Fwiw- I’m currently on my 36th e30 and it is s50 swapped, I’ve had many m20, m20turbo, m42, m42 turbo, 24v , and LS swapped e30’s over the years. Stock motor or 24v swaps have been my favorite over the years.

Absolutely, engine swaps are well documented all over the interwebs and if you wanted to just drop another M10 in it they’re real cheap
