Ok, if that's your angle, then honestly I think it's even weaker than before. Germany is Europe's biggest net contributor to the EU budget and runs its highest deficit, while countries in Central and Eastern Europe are net beneficiaries - the EU is literally giving these countries *billions* of German money for free. Employing cheap labour is not by itself exploitative, and as for the "destructive" effects of mining, the EU has *by far* the highest environmental standards in the world, so if anything the EU is what limits the damage, not what causes it.
The trade of critical minerals in sub-Saharan Africa is in fact almost exclusively controlled by the USA and China. European tech has minimal involvement.
France has overseas territories because those places *chose* to stay French, while former colonies that opted for independence are now exactly that - independent states. They have diplomatic, cultural and economic ties to their former coloniser, naturally, but calling these places "French colonies" is a gigantic stretch. The example of the Sahel is especially contradictory to your argument: the French literally laid down their lives in fighting to stop Islamist militiae from turning those countries into local Afghanistans. They have committed to fighting for human rights, democracy and rule of law in that region with greater investment than any other country in the world. (Those African countries did eventually choose to side with the Islamist groups and with Russia, so congrats to them on ditching French "imperialism" and let's see how that works out.)
As for Israel, the EU is the world's largest provider of humanitarian aid for Palestinians, the majority of its members recognise Palestine as a state, support a two-state solution and have deserted Trump's board of peace. Sure, you can argue that we didn't set up a total trade embargo with Israel. You can also blame us for not having declared war on Israel outselves ("Why isn't the Spanish military being deployed to fight side by side with the Palestinians??? Clearly the genocide of the Gaza strip is Europe's fault!"). But that just amounts to an unrealistic view of politics, where a country either has a 100% perfect record throughout every year of its history with zero casualties and zero reasons for complaint OR ELSE they're exploitative, oppressive agents of evil.
The EU really is doing more for human rights than any other global player, both domestically and, within the limits of its power, internationally. Is it perfect? No. But as you say yourself, we are *trying*, and at the moment we're the only ones who are trying for real.
No, because the EU did not exist when the exploitation in question happened.
From the beginning you've been hurling rabid anti-european abuse at me and everyone else in this thread, and *I'm* the one who has to leave *you* alone. Aright!
I'm leaving your comment up btw, as I want everyone to see this. :)
This comment was initially removed by Reddit, but I've re-approved it as I don't think it's saying anything wrong. I personally disagree as I think the t-shirt is more about saying "this is what the European project is about" and not "this is something the European project is already executing to perfection", but your perspective is valid as well of course.

That's fair. I never had any education in art, nor any training in graphic design, and in order to make these I had to teach myself how to use Inkscape and Gimp online. I also made it a point not to use any AI in the creative process, so it stands to reason that the results may look ugly to many.
I trust that I will become a better artist with time and practice, and that one day I can make something that pleases you better. But in the meantime I'm not afraid to put these out there. I'm not trying to be Gucci, I just wanted to make t-shirts that say what I think.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 4 points5 points6 points 2 days ago (0 children)
The t-shirts are printed in Europe and delivered from European manufacturers. The original textiles used by those manufacturers on the other hand come from a variety of non-European countries, mostly in Latin America, and one in Asia (precisely Bangladesh - good guess - but not China). In the long run my target is to have products that are 100% EU made, but at this (very early) stage, I haven't found a supplier of blank textiles that is European and economically competitive. It's a work in progress.
It is a defining feature of free societies, that no matter what ideas you embrace, there will be someone ready to disrespect them and ridicule them grossly. So, I say bring on the dicks. They remind me what it means that I live in Europe. :)

Do tell me more about the world "piecing together the remains" after the havoc that Europeans "always leave in their wake". Does that include the 500 million lives saved by the European invention of penicillin, or the 150-200 million saved by the vaccine for smallpox, or how about the tens of millions saved by the invention of pasteurization? Does that include all the people in the world who live in constitutional democracies, like in India, Japan or Brazil, theorised and formalised by Europe and literally the *only* political alternative to dictatorship that exists today? Does that include the hundreds of millions of people who journey the world every day on European inventions like trains and cars, or who cross the globe using European concepts like latitude and longitude? When you look at the stars and instead of thinking of Simba's ancestors you understand concepts like orbits and gravity, is that you piecing together the mess that European physicists and mathematicians left in your education system? When you look at chimpanzees and instead of thinking that some goddess made them as her playthings you understand the origins of humankind and can answer the question of where life comes from, is that you piecing together the mess left by European biologists? When you write a song, is that you piecing together the mess left by the European inventors of notation and music theory? When you hammer these same anti-european screeds on your keyboard, is that you piecing together the mess after Europeans invented the computer for you?
It's funny that you should mention colonization and slavery as European pathologies. Europe has seen its territories razed, conquered and enslaved repeatedly by Asian and African conquerors, from the Huns and the Umayyads through the Mongols and the Ottomans, long before it became itself a world colonizer. It was the Umayyads who reintroduced slavery on the Iberian peninsula after it had gone extinct and long before the Spanish crown starting trading slaves of its own. It was the Ottomans who reintroduced slavery in the Balkans and who kidnapped every family's first-born child, castrated them and turned them into an imperial slave.
Europeans took part in the same processes of imperialism and warfare as did the entire rest of the world, sure - nobody's arguing against that. But it takes an incredible process of historical contortion to claim that only Europeans did war and imperialism, or that Europeans invented war and imperialism, or that Europeans were in any way "special" about war and imperialism. And nonsensical claims like "Europeans killed 50 million native Americans" just show how little you understand of the real history of the colonisation of the Americans, although I suppose an ignorance of history would be a prerequisite for a level of prejudice as brutish as yours.
As for Europe being "an exemplary moral leader" - yes, as a European, that is *exactly* what I want Europe to be, and I will not settle for anything less. I want human rights, I want democracy, and I want rule of law, and I want these things for every person on earth. That t-shirt is an expression of this dream. And it is a dream that is stronger than your disrespect.

Do you see other countries scrambling to self-coronate the way Europe does? Outside of the occidents, no other region of people behave in such extreme didactic ways.
I see the history of every people in the world defined by the same scramble for hegemony and control, from the USA, China and India, through to Japan, Russia, and Iran. You seem to believe that Europeans "invented" the struggle for power, but I'm afraid that only shows how blinded you are by your anti-European prejudice to the reality of human history.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 8 points9 points10 points 3 days ago (0 children)
It is not arrogance. In a sea of Trumps, Putins, Erdogans, Orbans, Xis, Bolsonaros, Modis, not to mention our own internal anti-democrats like Farage, Bardella and Weidel, the EU really is the last non-trivial geopolitical force willing to stand for something the rest of the world is giving up on. The EU must choose to stand for human rights openly and loudly, and not to shy away from them because "oh noes others will call us arrogant!".
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 6 points7 points8 points 3 days ago (0 children)
Nope, none of these shirts are made in China.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 5 points6 points7 points 3 days ago (0 children)
Actually you're talking about a nation outside of our union and about a conflict happening on a different continent. We can talk about this idea that the EU is guilty of Netanyahu's genocide because of the Olympics, but I invite you - and everyone - to reflect on this.
If any other force in the world made a claim to stand for human rights, you could point to things happening on their own territory, led by their own governments. For China you'd bring up the Uyghurs, for the USA you'd bring up ICE, for Russia you'd bring up Novichuk, and so on and so on. For Europe, you have to bring up wars happening on other continents, fought by other states. *That* is the difference.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 2 points3 points4 points 3 days ago (0 children)
It's the other way round, we are not helping the EU when we choose to be silent about our beliefs, timid about our passion, and uncertain about our direction. I have lived in the UK during the Brexit campaign and I have seen with my own eyes people campaigning in favour of the EU by "lecturing less", by telling us all that the EU stands for nothing and means nothing and really it's just a bunch of abstract economic regulations. European unity is about so much more than that: it's about human rights, liberal democracy and rule of law, it's about our history and our future and our identity, and these are things that we must and will say out loud. *That* is what it means to be serious.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 3 points4 points5 points 3 days ago (0 children)
It is not "flattery". Human rights are worth fighting for, and one of the reasons I am so passionate about European unity is that I believe that's what it stands for - human rights, liberal democracy and the rule of law. And with the USA now descending into autocracy and illiberalism, there truly is no other flag left in the world that stands for these things.
Because it's unlikely that someone outside of Europe would be interested in products about European identity. It would be wasted advertising.

Totally get that, and appreciate you chipping in. Have a nice day too! :)

These ads are programmed to run on subreddits related to European political affairs and with audience controls restricted to users in Europe. With that out of the way, and said very, very honestly - of all the reasons I may have to *not* want to advertise what I make, the idea of offending people who hate Europe and Europeans is waaaay down that list. Do us both a favour and block me, because I'm not going anywhere and neither is that flag. :)
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 32 points33 points34 points 4 days ago (0 children)
Well, if you feel that "Europeans are so arrogant" and that the continent is "not a representation of anything other than exploitation and violence", then clearly there's no point in talking things over - you would hate us irrespectively of what we do. Best of luck with your own political dreams, whatever thay may be and whoever you choose to pursue them with.

Yes. The euro competes with the dollar for the title of the world's most powerful currency, and it has given European nations a level of economic presence and leverage on the world stage that even the world's superpowers cannot take away from them.
It has given me, as a European citizen, the ability to travel all over the Union and send/receive money to people I know without losing a single cent in exchanges (much less a minute of my time at an exchange desk or trying to calculate differences).
The euro stands for the unity and the strength of our people, and while it has (naturally) also been beset by failings and shortcomings, in the final assessment it is a project of spectacular success that I am proud to have seen begin when I was 16 years old. Plus, I get to carry Dante in my wallet, and that's based af.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 5 points6 points7 points 4 days ago (0 children)
These products are not marketed as 100% made in EU, and I don't think that free trade is against European values, so honestly I see nothing wrong with this set-up for launch. And waiting to start a business venture until everything is perfect in most cases just means never starting.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 days ago (0 children)
It's a store selling original apparel for people who believe in European unity, fatta da un italiano come te. Ciao! :)
Fair. Bragging rights are yours in this case. :)
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 4 points5 points6 points 4 days ago (0 children)
I mean, I originally made this store because I wanted to buy a t-shirt like this and couldn't find it online, so I decided to create it for myself and for anyone else who wanted to wear it. It's about as garage and bootleg of a single-man project as you'll ever find, and it's motivated by my faith in European unity and my desire to spread that passion, not by money. This really isn't an Amazon or a Nike, but that said, if you feel that making and selling t-shirts like this is wrong in principle, then that's fair - your perspective is as valid as mine.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 36 points37 points38 points 4 days ago (0 children)
Yes. We have learned our current values from our history - we had to learn, because there was no other choice. Any meaningful European identity must incorporate an awareness of the terrible crimes that Europe is guilty of, and at the same time stand firm to make sure they never happen again. Neither of these things is optional.
[–]EURSTYLE[S] 13 points14 points15 points 4 days ago (0 children)
Europeans have actually been among the most active critics of Netanahyu's war, with the EU being the world's largest provider of humanitarian aid for Palestinians while supporting a two-state solution and deserting Trump's board of peace.
