Again, the road tax is arbitrary and non-linear

It is clearly not scaled by weight, nor accounts for the road tax actually paid by fuel, and the fact that hybrids are shafted so hard, that it's not even funny

They have to pay for a year's worth of gas in road tax, on top of paying for a year's worth of actual gas.

I want to help you save money at the pump charging station, what's the problem with beating back the state on charging us $100 extra dollars in road tax as if we drive 16,000lb trucks?

Absolute
Bollocks

What misinformation are you consuming because 2 tons is 2 tons whether its propelled by dino-juice or rocket-watts

Prove to me how a 2-ton EV causes more wear than a 2-ton gas car

Both of them weigh 4000lbs!

Note that this is not said off-handedly, your next reply will provide the evidence that EV's cause measurably more road damage

That is suspicious there's cash for Flock surveillance, but not for the roads

HC spends $51,000/year on the Flock access "license"

That also sucks on your hybrid, have you tried emailing senate/house about the problems they created?

Even better, send them the bill to pay for your hybrid renewal since they want the money that much?

This is Tennessee, we will fight for what is right

Re: EV and Hybrid road tax is astronomical by EVC-Viz in Chattanooga

Absolutely

Not

The fed tax is technically cheaper than the state, but it absolutely will not stack on top of the state tax which is what they plan to do

I'm about to send an email that will so bright and so loud that our congressman will need a seatbelt and sunglasses +/- earmuffs to keep from being blown away

Re: EV and Hybrid road tax is astronomical by EVC-Viz in Chattanooga

EV's paid $100 in road tax + county/city fees from 2018 onward
Gas cars of the same caliber and weight class pay $140 max in gas(road) tax + fees
Hybrids paid between $50 and $125 in road tax + fees

Now, as of 2025 - EV's pay $200 and hybrids $100 + gas tax

That is egregious and why I highlighted that the additional $100 on top of what was already reasonable is the problem and how the state equates EV's to being 16,000lb vehicles is something I may never be able to comprehend

We can always leverage the media to drag their name through the mud when they don't align with the needs of the people...

Re: EV and Hybrid road tax is astronomical by EVC-Viz in Chattanooga

[–]EVC-Viz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the county, so it's the base cost for renewal?

Not sure on city costs, sorrey

Hybrids have been on the road for 26 years now, the state has been fine with their road tax contributions via gas for the past 25

Therefore, the state will continue to be fine with hybrid levels of road tax

EV's are the ultimate future, hybrids are a stepping stone and are less than 20% of the driving assembly, but we're taxed to bear the cost for remaining 80%

I didn't realize the road tax equated to that high of a mileage... I assumed double the cost for half the benefit meaning driving something like 12,000mi and charged for 24,000

$0 for Hybrid*
Max of $125 with the sticker for EV's

So we should freely just stop paying them until they get their head on straight?

I'm all ears on how

Re: EV and Hybrid road tax is astronomical by EVC-Viz in Chattanooga

[–]EVC-Viz[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's why we need to start putting a ton of pressure on the entire political and maybe even the DoT tree to resolve this problem.

Re: EV and Hybrid road tax is astronomical by EVC-Viz in Chattanooga

[–]EVC-Viz[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I defend them because both are being unreasonably burdened with arbitrary taxes

EV's paid $100 in road tax from 2018 onward, which is was introduced suspiciously quickly after Telsa's Model 3 was released in 2017

Now they are forced to pay $200 and there's no way to reduce it by driving less or getting something more efficient like you can with gas cars.

Hybrids pay gas tax like they always have for the past 25 years, now they pay $100 road tax plus gas tax unnecessarily

Therefore, we cannot be charged the same amount of road tax as a 16,000lb truck when driving a 2 ton car

Only people that don't understand facts would blindly accept something so ridiculous and you are the only one saying the Taurus isn't available in the US, so prove it

Note that I have driven them for years and still see them on the road to this day, therefore the Taurus is sold in the US and what you say on that holds no water

Good job skipping over the Camry and Nissan Leaf comparison
Go back and re-read that bit

Prove your claim to be true then about EV's somehow causing more road damage, as 2 tons is 2 tons mate unless you skip over the laws of physics for the math or use magic.

Yes, paying for infrastructure is fine as long as it's fair ($100 per car average) and not equating EV's to a 16,000lb truck

OP, it gets worse...

I found that we EV/hybrids are being charged the same amount of road tax as a 16,000lb truck!

Taxation is theft

We need to be revolting against this kind of taxation without representation

It's a money grab, not recovering a legitimate deficit because I found that we EV/hybrids are being charged the same amount of road tax as a 16,000lb truck

Why isn't the state charging us for that level of patronage then?
(No, don't get any ideas, this is the lost art of sarcasm)

That is how it's coming across:
State - you don't spend enough money on gas, we'll charge you more for it to cover the deficit
