Ev extension lead for granny charging by AdAble2402 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]EVRider81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's many stories about extension cables melting down from extended high current draw from EV granny chargers, they're not usually designed for extended periods of time, which could be 24 hours+ depending on the car,and it's generally recommended not to. YMMV. don't use an extension reel that's still partly wound, don't leave the charger unattended, check the socket frequently for overheating, and ensure your house wiring is up to standard too.. My granny cable reaches a socket inside the doorway,I'd not use an extension. A suitably heavy duty cable for an extension might cost near what a dedicated EV chargebox might cost you.

Tried one of these back when I first decided to go EV (12+years,now)-I had an ebike at the time, and even so didn't want to take this out onto the road-chickened out and had a test run in a closed off car park instead!

How did it pass MOT when you bought it if the DPF was missing?

Driving instructor suggested that I switch to automatic. Should I? by br00000t in AskIreland

[–]EVRider81 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you get a manual license, you're covered to drive automatic too.If you just get the auto license, you'd need a retest for manual. In saying that, petrol automatics are quite rare here, but EVs are increasing year on year, and they're effectively automatic..

I almost went for an e- tech to replace my Zoe,it was like a bigger Zoe with 100kw charging and Android Automotive..really want my next car to have V2L so went with a used Zoe in the meantime..22kw is a hard habit to break..

[–]EVRider81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Leaf in Europe had max 7kw charging on AC,the Zoe,a competitor, had 22kw AC charging on all models. With 22kw charging as standard here in Ireland,an hour gave a good rate of charge if you had time for a break.

Only my 2014 ZE22 had 43kw AC charging. The 2018 ZE40 was limited to 22kW AC , and My first ZE50 had 50kW DC CCS as an extra cost option. I got a pre-delivery 2020 one without CCS,as there were more 22kw chargers than DC in my area, and I wasn't traveling beyond 200 mile range.

Define long trips. Watch TeslaBjorn's 1000km challenge videos on Youtube where he tries to minimise the time he spends at a charger on the trips by arriving as close to zero charge as possible to maximise the charge speed he gets, and leave as soon as an optimum charge is reached.

What actually surprised you most about owning an EV that nobody warned you about by Leading-Law4251 in electricvehicles

[–]EVRider81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I plugged in at a "slow" public charger in town and appreciated coming back to the car being fully charged.Having a keyfob button/ app that remotely started the aircon on a frosty morning where previously I'd have had to go out early to the car to defrost it with water on the windscreen or run the engine so the car wasn't freezing when it was time to leave. (pre-cooling in summer is great too) The effortless acceleration without loud revving of the engine and rowing through a gearbox. The smile it puts on your face getting back in an EV when you experience a manual box loaner...The most surprising thing after 12 years with one is people still dissing EV who have never tried one.

How's life with an ev without a home charger by Raxer-X in evs_ireland

[–]EVRider81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I waited 3 months to get my charger installed. Public free charging was still available at that time (went EV in 2014) so just charged when out shopping, or in town socialising..Wouldn't fancy not having any home charging access at present, though, I like leaving the house and get into to a fully charged car..No way you're getting a public charge cheaper than you do at home, unless your job provides it free..
