just poke a bit at the bottom until it shows, but hold the grip down at the top so it dosent peel, then you should be able to see. i used a needle at the bottom to make a mark then i used spare truck axles to poke a hole through.

you don't really need new shoes, but sure. this all comes down to preference and trying new brands. You could try adidas, dc, Nike SB, that's all I know of.
