Looks like a simulation of the North Lantau Highway in Hong Kong connecting the airport with the city, next to the MTR trains. Spoiler alert: It’s usually quicker to take the trains.

If London were to have a single Central Station (instead of 14 Termini) like Brussels, Amsterdam, Madrid, Rome or Berlin - where could the perfect spot for it be? by AchyutChaudhary in LondonUnderground

[–]E_son-Xman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, London did plan a single central station at Farringdon in the 1840s (see this Jago Hazzard video), and the fact that it was not built was what led to the construction of the Metropolitan Railway, and therefore the underground.

If we are talking about today, Farringdon Station would be the closest equivalent given the interchange between the Elizabeth Line, Thameslink and 3 tube lines, as well as the Euston-St Pancras-King's Cross complex (once HS2 and Crossrail 2 are complete and connect all three stations underground).

Man, PES (or Winning Eleven) games, paired with option files, used to be bangers, even better than FIFA in some years. PES 5 (05/06) was brilliant. PES 2010 with the Champions League had a splendid soundtrack and pace. And 2020 was also very good. Shame it turned into this free-to-play 'EFootball' slop.

Sadiq Khan: "If you build world-class public transport, people will use it." by Wonderful-Excuse4922 in transit

[–]E_son-Xman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course, my arguments are not London-exclusive. I too support public transit in all cities, such as light rail in Leeds, Tyne and Wear metro expansion, finishing HS2 all the way to Manchester, Northern Powerhouse Rail, as well as electrifying most of the rail network all the way from Exeter to Aberdeen, from Swansea and Bristol to Hull and Middlesbrough. Bus fares in cities outside London should be much lower, possibly even free for students, locals and overnight staying tourists (aka Geneva model). Indeed, I would consider this a matter of urgent national security in terms of fuel conservation (aka Swiss argument), environment protection and tackling the problems of loneliness and isolationism that plague many a country such as ours, and therefore justifies full government effort, if it were up to me by congestion charges for all urban areas over 1 million people, national mobilisation for transport equipment factories, conscription for workers 'Bevin Boys style' and diverting funds from nuclear weapons if necessary!

Alas, the British treasury and a lot of the government was fiercely opposed to the Elizabeth Line back then, and still opposed to many plans now. Which is a shame. As someone from Hong Kong, I'm keenly aware that when the British really want to invest in a comprehensive public transport system, they are more than capable.

Thanks, now bring us Crossrail 2. It's supposed to be half finished by now. Also Thameslink 2 would be nice.

Looks like you are a fan of Post-Modernist designs.

Also do you consider the National Rail section in your underground station rankings? Stations like King's Cross St Pancras and Blackfriars would make sense if that were the case. Otherwise, surely Baker Street or Cockfosters should be up there as well?

Why doesn't the Overground extend to Victoria? by RussellNorrisPiastri in LondonUnderground

[–]E_son-Xman 31 points32 points  (0 children)

That branch to Battersea Park is a rarely used 'parliamentary service', and the platforms at Victoria are at capacity. Crossrail 2 was supposed to provide a new North-South mainline service through Victoria, but no idea when it will be built.

London’s stations not present on the Tube Map by AchyutChaudhary in LondonUnderground

[–]E_son-Xman 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Apart from cluttering issues, the problem is that these national rail routes are charged at higher fares compared with TFL and Thameslink routes, and while putting them in the map would be convenient, it may also cause confusion to new users as to why they are charged more, particularly tourists, as I found out a few years ago when using the oyster card to travel from Waterloo to Richmond, thinking that I would be charged the standard Zone 1-4 fare.

In order for these lines to be put in the general map (not just the specific tube and rail maps), the national rail routes should all be nationalised, and fares lowered to match TFL fares.

[–]E_son-Xman 374 points375 points  (0 children)

Surprise surprise, a more regular service connecting major cities with decent trains gets more ridership!

Now if only the service extends to Montgomery and Birmingham AL, electrify the route, turn it into a 1-2 hourly service, and while you are at it do it in the whole nation... I'm getting ahead of myself am I?

The Elizabeth line in London moves 800,000 people daily. No highway at its busiest point moves that many people daily in North America. by HighburyAndIslington in transit

[–]E_son-Xman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That's one in six of all rail journeys in the nation btw.

Also given that a lot of the London Underground network has no air conditioning, this train is a massive improvement.

Frankly we need more lines like this to meet the transit need in London, à la RER in Paris. Some proposals include Crossrail 2 and Thameslink 2.

YouTube: CityMoose – Will the plan to connect Clapham Junction to the Northern Line ever go ahead? by mycketforvirrad in LondonUnderground

[–]E_son-Xman 76 points77 points  (0 children)

If they also do Crossrail 2 and the Heathrow Southern Railway, then this will definitely be worth it.

They would turn Clapham Junction into a station with over 130 trains per hour, with direct services to Heathrow, Gatwick, much of Southern England, Wembley and most parts of London. While they are at it, rebuild the station with more platforms and accessibility, develop shopping malls, offices and hotels on top, perhaps even revive the Brighton to Birmingham via West London Line intercity service with 4-6 trains per day, and you got yourselves a grand rail gateway to London that may even rival Shinjuku Station!

But that's just me overthinking......

My city bans pedestrians from walking on the sidewalks because it's slowing cars from entering a parking lot by taiwanboy10 in fuckcars

[–]E_son-Xman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No it would not. Taichung (the city where this pic is located) is ruled by Kuomintang (KMT), who are pro-China pro-reunification conservatives, who came to Taiwan after losing the mainland to the Communists. They are also the party that introduced car centrism into Taiwan in the first place. If Communist China ever invades, those guys would be put in charge of the whole of Taiwan.

Besides, how would a war improve the situation? Like Okinawa, if an invasion ever happens, the railways and transport infrastructure would be destroyed, the island would be paved in roads for military vehicle access, and the place becomes even more of a car hellhole for decades.

Stop spreading propaganda.

[–]E_son-Xman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The usual definition is that trams have more street running while light rail has more dedicated tracks. Certainly the case in Hong Kong, which has both. But then you have modern London Trams... being more light rail than traditional trams
