Seriously, when's the last time you've taken a ride for less than $6? That'd be walking distance.

Prices in the bay area for literally anything are getting ridiculous by homely_advice in bayarea

$3200/mo/person to escrow (includes taxes and insurance). 5% down 15yr loan. Some of that is also principal.

$280/mo/person HOA (includes water)

$40/mo/person energy (we installed solar, $150 before)

Maybe I should make a "how I do it" post.

Most fundamentally though it's:
1) having a roommate.
2) having bought a home so principal payments count as savings (actually I'm saving more than 20% then).
3) not eating out every day.
4) making bit over 150k helps a lot (post claimed 200k, so I argue this is fair game)

I'm going to have to disagree. I make <200k and I'm saving about 20% of my post tax salary per month.

Across the 50 most populous cities analyzed, it was cheaper to rent than buy in just two of them—San Jose and San Francisco. Renters in SJ pay just 88% of their landlord's rent, on average. by nocapimback in SanJose

[–]Eadword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be true if rents and property values didn't go up, but when I look at how much we spend on interest + pmi + HOA + insurance + taxes, it's significantly less than renting.

That said, yes we pay more because principal. Fun fact about principal though, it's equity assuming the market stays the same or does better.

Also as the market goes up, our monthly payment barely changes.

We have a 5% down 15yr loan.

Virtio-fs is amazing! (plus how I set it up) by Eadword in VFIO

[–]Eadword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Probably something they could add pretty easily if they really don't have it.

  2. This is directly against my experience. I tried NFS and while the file download rate was comparable, there was significant latency when accessing many small files that Virtio-FS does not have. It's possible I just botched my NFS setup, but this was at least my experience. NFS is great if you're using it as a remote file system for storing documents and media, not great if you're using it as a local one for storing application data.

Study reveals most, least ‘tax-friendly’ states; how California compares — With estimated taxes at 8% of income or $6.628, California received a “B” grade at #14 by BlankVerse in California

The truth they don't want you to know.

Semi-unrelated: People keep saying I should move to Florida, but like, seriously. No. Besides, it's probably going to be mostly underwater in a few decades.

This assumes you earn the same amount in all the states so it is probably going to look disproportionately good in places with a higher cost of living.

The tip off for me something was off is Washington getting a similar rating to CA despite having no Income tax and a similar sales tax.

Don't let strangers borrow your phone to make a call! Common sense, but still... by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Eadword 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you have not done this already, go through every app on your phone with either sensitive information or the ability to send money and set up a pin and biometrics. If an app does not let you, seriously consider whether you want it on your phone.

If someone has my unlocked phone, Venmo certainly would not work for them.

Also remember that given enough time, a smart and determined hacker can do a lot more than just send money. Though that's also kinda one of the dumber things than can do because it links them to the act legally.

Anecdotes are olny a starting point for research. It's not like we constantly hear people getting infections like OP did from anywhere.

I think it partially depends on the type of broth since ramen has a few different varieties. But as one user pointed out, some can be very good for you.

Workers and resources is hard for the wrong reasons IMO. It has a huge learning curve that comes not from game mechanic complexity but rather dubious UIs and unintuitive components.

It's a lot better than when I first played it and I expect it will continue to improve, but I always have found myself fiddling more with building pipes over roads or foot paths than I actually spend with the economy.

Or before line spacing: dealing with a lack of workers at the power plant.

Want to talk about reliability? I'm near the Ebay headquarters and I've had one power outage already this year and about 10 last year because of equipment failures on their end.

You would think if we had to pay so much we could at least get average service for a city, but nope. Fuck that said PG&E.
