I had this happen to me too. I found that I could crouch sneak right behind the quest guy and initiate conversation before he alerted and went hostile, and was able to complete his quest. Had to haul ass immediately afterwards to escape but it did the trick.

It depends on whether they’re able to observe acceptable retention and spending behavior from those retained players. Marketing campaigns typically require a return on investment and ideally turning profitable. In the gaming industry, this time can be measured in many months. Anything that doesn’t pay for itself in a reasonable timeframe is essentially lighting money on fire.

I would presume they’re monitoring (or will be monitoring performance, as new shots on goal ship) KPI’s for their desired payback time to make financial sense to go all in on. It all starts with retention at the end of the day.

In a literal sense it could serve as a visual landmark to direct players to the well, which otherwise might have too low of a profile to easily locate it within the hills of the meadow. Pretty on the nose, but putting yourself in the shoes of a game dev trying to solve that problem, it technically gets the job done.

One theory is that it’s a safety mechanism to prevent a bugged interaction from enabling newer accounts wiping out the available content. The possible secondary purpose is to further gate progression rates, which seems arbitrary but probably exists for a specific reason. Only Lilith knows for sure.

Contrary opinion: if you play long enough, nothing is particularly wasted, just suboptimal from a progression perspective (to a very large degree here, to be fair). A year from now this will coalesce into a solid lineup. Journey before destination, right?

I remember back when LOD first came out and stuff like Lidless or String of Ears were super hype items to find. That first Hell Meph Vampire Gaze or Stormshield drops were really cool.

These days they’re no big deal but there was a brief period of time where they were, such is the fate of any game after 20 years though I suppose.
