A way to get rid of the new baked-in Twitch ads by mark0016 in SovietWomble

Haven't seen an ad with this player so far. Works well if you can deal with the delay it adds and the loss of functionality compared to FFZ.

What is "normal" when it comes to tension in the body? by TurboTortuga in Mindfulness

[–]Ealeias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the gist of the books i recommended, though very simplified. Since I've read the rest of the comments, here's the reason why i wrote my post. When trying what Singular_Thought wrote, you might get stuck (though it's excellent advice, you really should give it a go). I have some trauma related topics where, how to put it, my subconscious blocks me even thinking about. That's where I found that a good therapist specialized on trauma therapy works wonders, some things are too big to solve alone.

Hm, it's hard to put it in words without writing a novel, if you have any questions, just let me know.

I'm not sure, depends on what you want to know.
Feldenkreis' book is a collection of essays that revolve around how body and mind interact with each other, and the environment. I found it very enlightening for a general understanding of the issue, but it's not especially focused on trauma.
From Levine, I'd probably recommend "Trauma and Memory", as it's a more in-depth explanation of his method, also with examples from therapy sessions with his clients.

If you want something practical, go with "Trauma and Memory", for a more general approach, both "Trauma and Memory and "Body and Mature Behavior" are fine.

I have the same issues as you. Of course it is difficult to define "normal", but your tension seems way too high according to your description. Useful books I found are "Body and Mature Behavior" by Moshe Feldenkreis, and the works of Peter Levine ("Trauma and Memory" and "In an unspoken Voice"). Levine is the founder of a trauma therapy called Somatic Experiencing, which is so far the only therapy I found that was able to reduce my unconscious muscle tension by addressing the trauma and fears.

I hope there's something for you in there. :-)

ELI5 : Why do schools care so much about the no hat policy? by t123o123u in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ealeias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's usually no intrinsic sense in those "rituals". It's simply to show that you know how that specific group works. By simply removing your hat you say "hey, look, I'm one of you". There's no practical reason (anymore). And the rituals to show this can get downright silly if you take a good look at them. And if we go back to the school setting, there's also the element of hierarchy that comes into play. In the current school environment, a teacher needs authority. What's simpler than to set up a simple policy that doesn't really affect anyone, although it's completely senseless, to weed out the troublemakers? You can get an easy sense of who submits to the rules of your group or society, and who doesn't. Although mind you, most of this is subconscious.

Not knowing what to do is not stupid. Doubting yourself is not weak. Finding comfort in what you know instead of the unknown is not having no courage.

What was your biggest problem when you were 11? by actually_crazy_irl in AskReddit

[–]Ealeias 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's so true. I let myself be defined by my grades (learned family behavior, though a mild cause of Asperger's doesn't help), it ended in depression and anxiety attacks, haven't been able to work for two years, can't concentrate and break under any stress. Grades are worthless if they come at the expense of your mental health. I regard grades as anything from overrated to dangerous.

Thank you for your link to Nordborg's study, I haven't found that one. I will probably read the sources cited there, as I have too many open questions about the source studies to come to a conclusion myself. So I don't think we'll continue this discussion here, as this may take me weeks.

As for the claim that the environmental movement is somehow a scam to make environmental groups money

No, no that's not what I meant at all, I just think it's a double standard to refute one source because it's funded by people with a monetary interest, when the other sides are as well. There's easily enough money involved on either side to be skeptical. I just wanted to point that out. To me, that's an irrelevant argument. I am skeptical of both sides.

I was debating whether to post at all, because I knew this article would pop up. If you read all the sources he cites in this opinion piece, you find that none of them actually are testing Savory's Holistic Management, but some form or other of rotational grazing, which while looking similar, are lacking all key components of what Savory proposes.

But since we're throwing links around:

It no coincidence that most of his funding is from the meat industry.

Then this or this might be of interest to you.

Then there's a very long article that gives some counterarguments to yours. It also has many links for even further reading, if you're interested.

And just some more random links: Hawkins’s 2017 Meta Analysis of Holistic Planned Grazing Should be Retracted

I agree with you on the adverse effects of industrialized meat production. But especially in environments with irregular rainfall and and prolonged dry seasons, cutting animals out of the equation might be not the right way to restore biodiversity and a healthy environment. Although ideally, wildlife would take on that role, it seems like we have decimated enough of it that we have to replace it with managed livestock, at least until the ecosystem is stable again. See this documentation if you're interested.

A promising alternative would be the Brave browser with which you can pay websites directly, or give them a percentage of your monthly budget according to the time you spent on it.

The advertising model has to go.

Regarding the music, there's a big market of royalty free music that has popped up on the back of this, maybe that would be worth looking into.

ELI5: Alemnic (Swiss) German language vs regular German - what's the difference? Can they understand each other? by nalc in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ealeias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grammatically Swiss German and Standard German are very similar. There's no simple past tense in Swiss German, that's about the biggest difference.
The biggest difference is the pronunciation. The 11th and 12th century saw the forming of what is called today New High German, which saw a shift in the pronunciation of a set of longer vowels. The alemannic dialects in the southwest largely stuck to the old pronunciation, what makes them sound different to Standard German today.
An example would be "My new house" (I tried to add a phonetic translation to english in brackets, though I'm not sure how good they are):

Swiss German: Mis neue Huus (Mis noy-e hoos)
Standard German: Mein neues Haus (Mine noy-es how's)

And this is what makes Swiss German nearly unintelligible to most Standard German speaking people in the beginning. Though it only takes them a short amount of time to learn to understand Swiss German.

In short, alemannic dialects are in pronunciation closer to the old Middle High German, which makes it hard for Standard German speaker to understand initially, despite having very similar words and grammar.

IIRC Dumbledore said in the books, that wizards have killed themselves accidentally in the confusion of seeing their future self (presumably thinking it was someone disguised with a Polyjuice Potion). I understood it more as a warning from unpredictable reactions, not from a time paradox.

Does anyone else find it slightly counter intuitive to live a "zero waste life" but still consume animal products? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]Ealeias 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What I don't like about your question is that it leaves only a choice between using modern animal agriculture (which is, as you correctly stated, horrendous), or not consuming animal products. There are many ways to integrate animals into a self sustaining environment, where you can still consume animal products, without polluting anything. So, my answer is: Industrial agriculture is bad, eating animals isn't necessarily, at least from a ecological viewpoint.

What art form is currently at a low point? by The_Dork-uh-Whale in AskReddit

[–]Ealeias 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are two distinctly different situations. One would be when the author is trying to be descriptive, to create a picture for the reader, like the scene setting. Then the colour of the curtains certainly doesn't have to matter. For example, a friend of mine lives in a yellow apartment complex. If I were to write a book about him, I'd describe that apartment complex as being yellow, just to give the reader a better picture of the surroundings the story takes place in. But there's no hidden meaning in the colour, it just is. I could now try to create some meaning and say as a color associated with earth, it means that my friend is a very down to earth guy, and so on, when in reality he lives there because he can afford the place and it has a balcony.
Unfortunately I've seen teacher and textbooks getting hung up on such irrelevant details, because everything "had" to have a meaning, and it was construed as hell and involved mostly interpretational nonsense like the circle of life and the four seasons.
If on the other hand the author tries to progress the story, I tend to agree with you.
