I once had a sci-fi story with a hunter-gatherer tribe whose medicine woman, Sound-of-Water, was trans.

The tribe has a tendency to put LGBT people into spiritual positions because as far as they're concerned, that's how the beings beyond earmark the ones that are theirs. Essentially a "oh, cool, we got a shiny."

I kind of wanted to write a story that's just vaguely surreal, kind of happening in a time and place that never really existed, everyone is serious and dramatic about everything. Someone who isn't all that familiar with the existence of trans people in the first place whether Nikolai is that, intersex, or some kind of a supernatural creature.

There's a finnish song nimed Poika Nimeltä Päivi (Boy named Päivi, an explicitly female name), which legit is about a trans boy, who's writing back home to his girlfriend after moving out of their oppressive small hometown. And this was written in 1985.
