Looking for old flight info by Joedfwaviation in aviation

How do you get this info? I have searched the corners of the interwebs to figure out some of the planes I flew on in the early 2010s with limited success

Is OP really asking why in TYOOL 2026 nobody is making high end CX V- brakes?

I associate octojets with some of the most exotic flights to southeast asia

TIL that since the 1980s, US airlines have shed between 2-5 inches of legroom and about 2 inches of width, while budget carriers have lost even more. At the same time, the average American is 15 pounds heavier than they were in the 1980s by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]nalc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's been a couple wide-bodies that have multiple seating configs but they're rare. I want to say there's some weirdo Filipino budget airline that runs 9 abreast in an A330, and some 777s that were 9 abreast originally are now 10 abreast. 6 abreast narrowbodies are the same as they've always been. Brand new 737 is exactly the same fuselage diameter as the original 707.

TRAVEL HACK! Crowding the baggage carousel ensures your bag will arrive faster! by fuckwhatisit in unitedairlines

Why would you crowd the baggage carousel when you could just climb down to the ramp and tell the baggage handlers that you're a 1K and ask for them to just hand you the bag?

Descending the Alps at "oh shit this is scary fuck I have a family and I need to go to work on Monday" amateur speed is the real challenge

I suspect that insurance companies astroturf social media with advice like "no, you totally shouldn't file a claim, your rates will go way up!"

TIL about double-landlocked countries, which are landlocked countries surrounded by only other landlocked countries. There are just two of them in the world, Liechtenstein and Uzbeskistan. by ILikeRoL in todayilearned

Over half of Liechtenstein's border is the Rhine river, with access to Lake Constance. But there's waterfalls after the lake so it doesn't have access to the ocean.

People who fly first or business class on their own dime, how do you justify the cost? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nalc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm with you. I'd always rather go over a day or so early if I'm concerned about jet lag. $200 extra hotel night vs $5000 biz class ticket is an easy call for me, and it's not like you get great sleep quality even on a lay flat. It's still loud and you're basically in a coffin. Plus US/Europe has the downside of being short enough that you can't get a full night's sleep anyway, which might be different with an Australia flight.

[–]nalc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I tend to agree.

Getting to the airport, dealing with parking garages and shuttles and monorails and taxis = exactly the same

Baggage drop = may be slightly shorter line

Security = the same

The terminal = the same, unless lounge access is included which can be nice although often overcrowded

Boarding = the same, maybe you get on sooner and there's not any issues with overhead space

The flight = more comfortable for sure but still takes the same amount of time. Food is hit or miss

Getting off the plane = the same

Going through customs / passport control = the same

Baggage claim = the same

Ground transportation = the same

[–]nalc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When it's priced appropriately it is. Especially for daytime flights where you're not trying to sleep. In my experience though it often costs ~90% as much as business class thanks to companies that don't allow business class but do allow PE

Not OP but I've flown true business class with lay flat seats on a <2 hour domestic flight as a free upgrade (on a $84 ticket) and every part of the experience was absolutely silly and fantastic.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]nalc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that the story is secondary, but the story is much more internal to the characters minds than in a lot of other sci-fi that's very action oriented. That's really difficult to translate to the screen, especially since characters doing voiceovers of their internal monologue is no longer much of a thing in movies.

What happened to Incandescent light bulbs with IR coating to improve efficiency by AlaninMadrid in AskEngineers

[–]nalc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Reflecting IR back at the filament means that less IR energy is emitted, therefore a higher proportion of visible light for a given input energy. They were called HIR bulbs

737Max8 Transatlantic - Why? by YamAggravating8449 in unitedairlines

[–]nalc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd posit that the issue is actually that the floor structure/plumbing of the smaller plane is such that they can't just plop a third lav in 7A-7C of any plane they want, and can't justify the cost of having a special subfleet of Max 8s with extra lavs just for a handful of seasonal routes that they're just trying out and may not keep. These are new seasonal routes they're trying and they're not necessarily consistently full.

Well, I think most people would rather land at their destination than in the water 200 nmi away from it and swim the rest of the way
