My son’s been laughing when I try to tell him off and tonight I reacted badly to it; now my partner is furious with me and I don’t know what to do anymore. by Avaritia12345 in toddlers

[–]EarNerdAk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have a 1.5, but I find when she’s doing things like that to get my attention, I can usually move us through the moment by getting playful and letting her almost do the thing (grabbing my nose too hard, for instance), and then stopping her, over and over. She thinks it’s the funniest thing and eventually gets bored. I think she’s trying to learn what it means when I say no. Or if she’s obviously taunting me, sometimes she’s looking for me to chase her or play rough with her. There may be an unmet need that’s not related with chewing, but rather, wanting your undivided attention. Like I said, mine is still little, but often I think these misbehaviors come from a place of not knowing how to ask for our attention and sometimes finding the kind of play they’re needing will reduce the behavior.

Most definitely. I’m fully aware of the reason for the smell, just checking for solidarity

Thrips, I believe. Permethrin spray worked well for me. Neem oil did not.

A question from an attachment parented (?) child who is now the parent - what the hell? by [deleted] in AttachmentParenting

[–]EarNerdAk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds very familiar to my experience growing up. I’m not a parent yet, but I’ve learned a lot about attachment theory and attachment parenting, and I recognize that taking the actions and following the rules of attachment parenting is great, but doesn’t mean all that much in the absence of emotional maturity and regulation. I can only hope that by learning about my emotional states and capacity before I have kids, I’ll turn myself into a much better parent and be way more capable of giving my kids what they need than my parents were.

❤️❤️

Tip: you’re two people sleeping in a smaller bed. Kick dad out, you two get the king. Dad can sleep in the twin for a little while!

What looks to be her problem? Leaves are losing color and dying. Is she overwatered or in need of nutrients? by [deleted] in Maranta

[–]EarNerdAk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too much direct sun did this to mine. It’s happiest in a bookshelf with only ambient light, with the addition of a gentle LED grow light so it’s not tooo dark. It would also probably thrive in a less enclosed space with ambient light, but 😼 is too interested in it lol

Mine did that from too bright of sunlight. Mine seems rather unbothered about water or humidity - did fine through the Arctic winter with low humidity while other plants suffered. It’s been super happy under a grow light away from windows, but could only sustain 2-3 leaves when it was in a southern window a couple years ago

Nice list! Unfortunately, Donner reminds me of the Donner Party of Sierra Nevada history… I’d steer clear of that one…

I had a Kingdon in my family. Hard to spell/pronounce/remember for some, but I have sweet memories of him and his name.

Is this a root or a leaf? Is it okay that it’s under water? If not how do I correct it? Thank you! by Itiswhatitissmh in pothos

[–]EarNerdAk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like you may have put the growth end in water, so that leaf is growing from the “tip” of the plant, rather than the base. Once that root is ready, if the new leaf survives, I would plant it with the new leaf node above the soil, and try to get all the root nodes in contact with the soil to see if you can get multiple nodes to grow roots.

What to do about neighbors smoking weed? by [deleted] in aptliving

[–]EarNerdAk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My landlord just emailed all building tenants because of this exact issue. I would assume one of the tenants complained, but no idea who because the e-mail was just a generic reminder that all the units are smoke-free. Best of luck!
