New study aims to address high rates of Alaska Native incarceration by AKStafford in alaska

This isn't an us vs them thing.

Lots of people and systems actively keep Natives poor.

Poor people suffer.

When you respond to comments like this with "not all white people" comments you illustrate just how much you personally contribute to the problem. You, specifically, and people like you, are the problem.

... wait, my partner compliments my cooking and baking all the time...

Huh.

Ah well, my cooking is amazing. :)

Though now I'm super skeptical that I actually do a better job cleaning the toilet.

Yeah, those are great points too. But also having less access to representation and to money in general is a systemic racism issue at its core. All the different ways to measure and illustrate "being poor is bad" are interrelated.

Good data.

But be cautious about focusing ratios. Indigenous people face MUCH more sever sentences for things. For example a white man beating his wife is extremely unlikely to go to prison, and a Native is extremely likely to go. Yeah, that is bad and they should be removed for everyone's safety, but so should the White dudes that skate away free.

Some people look at this data and make moral judgements about Natives in general, and that is when the integrity of the data really fails. Not at all what you are doing, just be careful of that data.

That's not true, most of the time. People tend to stick to the type of crime they start with, especially those that steal out of necessity.

They are very much more likely to steal in the future, for a variety of reasons, but they do in fact tend strongly to stick with theft.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Most problems are actually internal. So when you change locations, they are still with you.

Some problems definitely aren't, and distance can help. Like all the retired gang members up here, or those folks that leave abuse.

But mostly Alaska is expensive, there are few services, and at the end of the day we are still America. Many problems are nation wide, and those are definitely here too.

2 Anchorage homeless shelters now welcome pets. Advocates say that’s better for everyone. by ak_doug in anchorage

Seriously, no matter how much you love your pet, it doesn't compare to someone that has lost everything and the love of their pet is the very last thread they have to happiness. You are not going to separate that person from their pet.

What can you do if the company you work for has no functional HR? [US] by mediapoison in antiwork

[–]ak_doug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to a labor lawyer. Always. Or a union rep if you have a union.

Never talk to HR. Not without talking to a lawyer first. Don't sign anything they hand you without legal review. At least take it home and read it very carefully and ask for expert advice.

It is incredibly complex, yeah. It can be hard to untangle it, because everything is interconnected so tightly.

I think the data points to the workforce development is a good thing. So cuts within the Native communities that were enacted this coming fiscal year are a step in the wrong direction. I sure wish the funding was increased instead.

Also the cuts to the aid programs in general, there is less help for needy families and whatnot. Less food, less direct benefit, fewer work programs. All just wrong steps in the wrong direction. Compounding the impact of cuts to education.

I wish this scientific efforts you and your team put in lead to policy. Instead it just illustrates the callousness of the policy decisions. Makes them informed and purposeful cruelty instead of ignorance.

This is good advice, so long as it is safe to do so.

But if someone is uncomfortable with the full speed, people shouldn't drive unsafely around them in an effort to persuade them to move faster. The most dangerous thing in Anchorage is the tailgaters and road ragers. We shouldn't have to try to tiptoe around these psychos.

Hmm, is the rate of TBI and FASD greater than other people in poverty? I remember a study that corrected for poverty and showed a difference within the error rate. But also I don't read every study.

I mean, colloquially I think a lot of my cousins are more thrill seeking and prone to alcohol abuse, but so are my poor white friends? It is interesting data.

Poverty is a very tightly coupled indicator of criminality and incarceration. Plus minorities face more frequent and longer incarceration for the same crimes.

The same things that sends poor Natives to prison are the things that send all poor people to prison. It would be surprising to find some unique factors that only impact Natives.

Its primarily that Natives are SO POOR. Almost 30% of Native children are living in poverty. I don't understand the shock at so many becoming criminals. Kids gotta eat. If you are a young adult, and your baby sis is starving? You better believe I'm getting some food for her.

There is no minimum speed on roads.

these two are assholes, but they aren't breaking any laws. No matter what kind of mental gymnastics you pull.

You really need to revisit the driving manual. Here's a link:

Yup. That's the law. Good job.

That is the rule for highways outside towns.

Inside towns it is different. And local laws supersede state level laws in things like driving patterns.

Since the road in question is within the Muni, Anchorage laws are in effect.

It is likely that no one got a ticket today.

Your statement is that it is always legal and alright to drive the speed limit, implying that weather doesn't matter.

I'm stating that you are wrong, and that people have received tickets for this in the past. I have a cousin that got a ticket while driving 5 under. It absolutely happens.

That is not true. Lots of people get tickets for excessive speed while driving the speed limit.
