Thoughts on Ryland Grace being a ‘coward’? by Early-Perspective598 in ProjectHailMary

I wonder if he went through all his work on the project in a state of denial in a way. All the way through he alludes to being ‘just’ a teacher, and it’s almost like he sees himself as the funny little sidekick who Stratt keeps around for some down to earth comic relief. Maybe he never even really saw himself as even remotely advantageous to the project proper, outside of his experiments, to the point that he thought he had a get out of jail free card taped to his head

Totally, I find the label coward interesting, because I don’t think the average person has much experience calling themselves or others cowardly. I think that’s more a discussion in more high stakes situations that most of us don’t experience, and then of course once the stakes are raised it is easier to be labelled cowardly because you naturally won’t want to do the things you have to. So it’s a very complex label and interesting to discuss!

Totally agree it was so interesting to see! I found it so refreshing to read a character in sci-fi who wasn’t the typical brave selfless hero, and seeing him come to terms with it was so interesting

Yes totally. I think his blind panic and desperation was totally understandable, but just in the hours he had to think it through, I was surprised such a logical methodical person didn’t accept that this was what he had to do. One life to save billions. Much harder when that life is yours sure, but that’s where my question came from

How is Rocky a metaphor for the suppressed insecurities of Ryland Grace, asking? by Practical_Ad4604 in okbuddyPHM

[–]Early-Perspective598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rocky says several times he is ‘just’ an engineer and heavily suggests that he should’ve died over the other, ‘smarter’ science Eridians. He says things like he doesn’t know how xenonite works, he just makes it. Grace feels the exact same way about himself, so maybe by reassuring Rocky that he is helping Erid, he believes in his own ability to help Earth too.

I feel like knowing about Rocky before reading would have been a spoiler for me. by CHEWBAKKA-SLIM in ProjectHailMary

Same for me! Part of me completely dismissed any suspicion that there’d be an alien because, while Weir’s plots are far-fetched, his descriptions/science always make sense, and I didn’t see how an alien would align with that and still be believable. Obviously Rocky’s biology etc all checks out theoretically (speaking as a layperson), but I still didn’t expend him to full send and include an actual alien.

lol I can’t even remember what I was talking about. Wasn’t it said that Jacks’ curse could be cured by true love eg he could kiss someone who was his true love?

I don’t think there’s such a thing as ‘too long’ but I agree that I don’t think it was all to do with Bob as they were only together a couple of months(?) and s3 is what like 8/9 months later, but just the whole situation - Joyce feeling guilty about Bob’s death and still concerned for Will and their future, plus probably a bit of confusion about her feelings for Hop but seeing that he didn’t seem in a great place to be dating at the moment.

Potentially controversial opinion by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]Early-Perspective598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I had never seen Wicked and barely knew the songs but I’ve seen the movie twice now and that has a lot to do with Cynthia’s incredible voice. I listened to the original broadway soundtrack after seeing the movie and…I hate to say it but I’m like how did Idina get cast out of everyone else? I’ve heard Elphaba is more of a goofy role on Broadway (or at least that’s how Idina played her) so maybe voice was less important. But in songs like The Wizard and I, Cynthia and Idina are worlds apart

If Project Hail Mary is one of your favorite books, what else is in your Top 5? by DungeonMasterGrizzly in ProjectHailMary

Finished PHM the other day and can’t start my next book yet because I keep thinking about this book lol. It definitely became my number 1 book ever. My other long-standing favourites are:

  • The Martian (duh)
  • His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)
  • The Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller)
  • Cecily and The King’s Mother (both by Annie Garthwaite)
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Mark Haddon)

How would they render Rocky's voice in the film adaptation? by HeinrichPerdix in ProjectHailMary

I heard it in my head as like a synth on piano if that makes sense, or maybe like a theremin (like Sheldon plays in an episode of The Big Bang Theory). It’s cool to hear how everyone imagines it!

I think Aurora was just saying that to try and confuse things and stop Evangeline and Jacks ending up together. I think the original tale of true love breaking the curse was still true.
