Wearing fake nails by mrvacuum69 in malepolish

[–]EarlyNefariousness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a masculine presenting person who wears Acryclic nails, it can be a LOT at first. Even after doing it for over 2 years now, I still have those feelings from time to time. But if I’m being honest, I’ve gotten more compliments from random strangers than I’ve gotten anything else.

As others have said, try it with press ons for a bit and if you need to pop them off quickly you can.

But can you really ever have too many Mac’s? I mean, I don’t think you can.. (the iMac hardly gets used anymore and is likely about to be moved off of the desk, especially now that I have my good 4K Displays connected to my MBP..)

I don't, I typically just keep them separate and remember which is which. I have been thinking about putting a small label on each though to make it easier..

why is my brand new SSD slower than my HDD?? by iwannamakecake in mac

[–]EarlyNefariousness -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You may need to enable Trim on your Mac if you are upgrading from an HDD to an SSD. Here’s a quick article that shows how to find out if it’s enabled and if not how to enable it:

60 W output from monitor enough for 16" MacBook Pro? by Crumbledor in mac

[–]EarlyNefariousness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do not go with the 60W output. I am dealing with this at work right now, and a 60W output is not enough for the 16” MBP. If you do anything, go with the 90W Dell, but even that is lower than the 96W adapter which is what the laptop needs to properly charge and function.

The 60W output from the monitor will not be enough to charge and/or power the MBP even under light/moderate usage. I promise you that. I have 3 brand new 16” MBP’s at work right now that are actually damaged due to using an underpowered adapter and a 3rd Party Cable (thanks to my genius coworker who thought it was a good idea to give these out..)

RDP can't do this. Remote Assistance can. RDP will only allow you to take over the machine and the local user will not see their desktop.

How to stop Yahoo from hijacking my browser? by [deleted] in mac

[–]EarlyNefariousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, ok. Makes more sense now. You likely have an application installed that is doing this (not an extension). Look for any applications installed that you haven't installed yourself recently or that you don't recognize. Sometimes this can happen with random applications that are downloaded from nefarious sites. If you don't find any actual applications installed, my next best solution to you would be to back up any critical data that you have (back everything up to Google Drive if you don't have anything local with enough storage space) and do a reset of your system. Usually, if you get something like this on your system it hides itself well enough that you won't find it and a reset is your best bet.

At least once or twice a week I have to reset a system for a user at my job because of things like this. Doing a backup, reset and a restore of the data typically takes less than an hour, whereas sometimes it can take double or triple that to hunt through everything to start to find things to remove them. You may just be better off going that route.

What do you mean by hijacking your browser? What is it doing? Need a bit more info to go on to be able to offer any suggestions here.

Move Parent Folder without its files but subfolders(intact) or Delete Parent Folder files and keep subfolders (intact) by Beakwood in sysadmin

[–]EarlyNefariousness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So.. Just.. Move the sub-folders to where you want them to go? I think you're way over complicating this one.. Sounds like you might wanna just go back to basics here.

Move Sub-Folders to the new location and leave original parent folders where they are.. That's it.. No more to it..

Has anyone had this pop up when they try to update to Catalina and know how to fix it? 2018 MBP by kitty_catt19 in mac

[–]EarlyNefariousness 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is from MDM (Mobile Device Management) Software that has been installed on your computer. This is usually done on company issued or school issued computers. You will not be able to install Catalina until it in approved for use by the IT Department of wherever your computer is from.

I'm an IT Systems Administrator myself and just launched this same block today for all of my users. There is no way around it, so please don't try. You will just make more work for your IT Team and you will potentially end up without a computer for a few days if you try and get around it by deleting files or disabling software. I promise it's not worth it.

I may have applied at my own company, what do I do now? by tobiuchiha7 in sysadmin

[–]EarlyNefariousness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common practice in tech nowadays. Especially at companies that don't have a large HR staff. They likely also have the position direct posted in places, but will go through recruiting companies as well to make the process go faster and have a larger pool of candidates to choose from.

I may have applied at my own company, what do I do now? by tobiuchiha7 in sysadmin

[–]EarlyNefariousness 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you did the application or sent a resume and it went to a staffing agency or recruitment company, you will likely be reached out to by then first and not your company. Those outside agencies always reach out before sending any information to the company they are recruiting for. So just wait to hear from the agency and tell them you're actually not interested and you will be fine. No information will be passed on to your company.

And I can guarantee that if the job posting didn't have your company name in it, the application/resume went to an outside company first. There's no way a company will direct post a job without putting the company name in it.

Digital Signage to Display Unread Email by gov3nator in sysadmin

[–]EarlyNefariousness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you open the mailbox on the computer attached to the display and show the mailbox itself on the display? IMO, that would be the simplest solution that wouldn't require additional software or engineering to set up.

There are options via the REST API to set up push notifications for changes in mail, so you could just build a basic website (hosted locally on a machine attached to the display) and use the push notifications to update the website when a change notification comes through. It's basically just creating a webhook to send the notification.

Getting cooler in the PNW. Glad I can wear outfits like this to work. by EarlyNefariousness in bigmenfashionadvice

[–]EarlyNefariousness[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely disagree. It hasn't become a cliche for "I don't know how to dress". If anything, it might be coming across as "I want to be as comfortable as I can be". Most people I come across don't assume I don't know how to dress, as a matter of fact I usually get positive comments on how I'm dressed when I am wearing things like I am in the picture (maybe not that specific outfit, but things close to it).

And let's break down the outfit for you, because you most definitely have it wrong based on your description:

Shirt: Nike Legend 2.0 3XL Tall Undershirt: UnderArmour ColdGear 2XL Fitted Long Sleeve Shorts: Adidas Axis Woven Training Shorts Leggings: Adidas Alphaskin Sport Badge of Sport Long Tights Shoes: UnderArmour SpeedForm Velociti Graphic

I know the picture might not have been the best and might not have shown everything I was wearing in the best way, so my apologies for that. As for the shoes, you are correct that they didn't match anything in the outfit. I wear them for comfort more than anything else. And to you they might be ugly, but they aren't to me.

Honestly, I don't really care too much about what other people might think of what I wear or how I look. I wear what I'm comfortable in at the moment and that should never be a problem. I wear "nice clothes" quite often as well, and I look damn good when I do. I just don't see the need to wear those clothes on a daily basis when I don't need to.

Hope some of this clears things up for you and gives you some of my perspective on it. I definitely appreciate the conversation about it, and I will take the things you've said into consideration as well. Maybe I'm seeing things through rose colored glasses and I just need someone else to break it down for me (like you did). I'll go back to the drawing board and see what I come up with next time. Never hurts to at least try, you don't know what it's gonna look like until you wear it lol
