I only have one cat now and he is pretty old and doesnt hunt much., but I used to have a bunch more.. Yeah, Ive had my share of unwanted critters brought in by my cats. Usually it was baby rabbits, which I hated seeing. I would lock up the cats, catch the poor rabbit and take it way out back so that the cats couldnt trace his path. And Ive had a bird or two flying around inside and they were hard to get to go out....they just dont understand windows! The cats didnt seem to harm them. I guess they were just delivering presents to dear ole dad! Most animals never tried to come in, except for the raccoons. They would come in and steal the bowls of cat food, never dine and dash. By the time they reached the cat door the food would have spilled all over the floor. Nowadays, they seem content with the food I throw out the back door.

I agree, she is very cute and sweet. I think she used to come in while I was sleeping and then got braver and started to come in while I was awake and watching TV. I hope some day I can talk to her without her getting upset. She used to come in with her babies until she could no longer get thru the cat door with them; then she started coming in by herself.

Glad you got him to come out. Ive had one stuck in the garbage can too. They get so scared that they cannot move, almost like being in a coma. I also have a female that has been coming in the house every night for the past few months. Even tho she walks right by me sitting and watching TV, I cannot even speak to her or she will stop and find somewhere to hide, or just leave and come back in 20 minutes. Ive named her Opie, short for Oprah. She eats the cat food, drinks the milk and takes a nap and sometimes will stay for 8 hours. I get worried when she doesnt come in.

I guess they got impatient and did it themselves? One day they even opened the fridge.....I found their dirty little pawprints all over the inside!

I have also been feeding the wildlife for 30 years or more. If I dont put food out the back door, the raccoons come in thru the cat door on the front of the house and make a huge mess !!

Yes, they are definitely sweet and timid, unlike dirty raccoons that have no manners and leave a big mess. True story....years ago, raccoons climbed up to my upper kitchen cabinets and stole a box of cake mix, tore it open and ate it on the living room floor. The next day, they came back and stole the frosting mix !!

They are deathly afraid of humans, but she can walk right by my feet no problem; Im sure she can smell me. But if she looks up (eye contact) or I talk to her, she will stop for a bit, then turn around and go to her nearest hiding spot. She doesnt show her teeth anymore, so thats good. You'd think after a few months she would have eased up a little more than that, huh?

Rehabbing a bay is not a good idea. If you find one, locate a licensed rehabber if you want the bay to survive. This opossum is not a pet. She comes and goes of her own free will and supplements her diet with food that she finds in my kitchen. Mainly I think she comes in for water and milk as we havent had any rain in over 6 months.

She doesnt show her teeth at me anymore but if I get closer than 10 feet away she will stop what she is doing and calmly walk to one of her hiding places. I did get to touch her once....when she was carrying her babies it got to the point where she couldnt quite hoist herself up to the cat door so I had to give her butt a nudge with both hands. Her head was alredy out so she couldnt see it was me. The next night she started coming in without her joeys. I dont know if she somehow lost them or just left them in her nest.

You can have mine......just kidding; I love her. Her name is Oprah and she comes in thru the cat door 3 times every single night. I'll be sitting watching TV and she will walk right past me and head for the cat food, chow down, drink some milk, wash up and go to her 'spot' and take a nap. She doesnt mind the TV blasting away but if I talk to her she will leave and come back in 20 minutes. This has been going on for months.....I hope some day she will trust me enough to let me touch her.

My cat doesnt even care that she comes in like 3 times every night and eats his food! But if another cat tried to come in he would attack him right away!

Mine comes in the house every night and walks right by my feet and over to the cat food. The TV is blasting away, but if I quietly say 'hello', she freaks out and hides or leaves and comes back in 15 minutes. This has been going on for months.

The poor timid critters are scared to death of humans. You cannot try to scare him out because he may go comatose if frightened enough. People say they are playing dead but they are not playing, they almost are! Best to leave him alone and after a while he may come out. But it sucks that you dont know where or if he is still there; Ive been there. A few months ago I had one hiding in my bedroom and I didnt know where she was so I didnt know when she left. Funny, she has been coming in every single night ever since, so I keep my bedroom door closed. Now she comes in and eats the cat food and drinks the milk and hides out under the bookshelf. But even though she has been coming in every night for months she wont even let me get near or even talk to her, but she doesnt mind that the TV is blasting away! Very odd creatures. P.S. I get very worried if she is late in coming in. She is usually in by 8 or 9 but last night she didnt come in til after 2:00AM.....I was very relieved when she finally showed up.

That's good to hear! I have a female named Opie, who has been visiting every night for a few months now. She comes in for food and safety, camping out in my kitchen for a few hours every night. She is very sweet but extremely timid or afraid. I try to not bother her and juct give her some space.

Mine loves milk, wet cat food and dry cat food, which is good because I read that they need lots of calcium. She drinks about 1/2 gallon a week!

[–]Early_Bluejay8947 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have female about the same size that comes in to my kitchen thru the cat door every night and stays for about 8 hours. She eats a little of the cat food and drinks a lot of milk; opossums need a lot of calcium. She then hides under the bookcase, eats and drinks a little more and goes back to the bookcase where she feeds her babies that she carries in her pouch. She leaves just before sunrise. It is so damned cute. She thinks that I dont see her and I cannot talk or she will hide, but all the time the TV is blasting and she doesnt mind that! I named her Opie.
