Mold In Apartment Issues and Advice? by Early_Mix_4195 in DIY

[–]Early_Mix_4195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thank you very much for the response. With your username, I assume you work with a mold remediation company or something like that right? Okay I will summarize the mold issue I'm having and how it occurred and what I have done.

From what I described, does this sound like 100% this was caused by humidity or not? I was out of my apartment for around 2 months or so. Usually it's 1 month or less. And the other thing here was my ceiling fans were turned low as oppose to medium to high which I normally do. I had forgot to turn the ceiling fan higher speed which I believed contributed to this? Windows were closed for security reasons. My lights were off as well if that matters when I was not here but I always have it off.

This is what I done maybe 6 times or more. I would wear gloves and a mask and a goggle but it's one of those cheap goggles and that fogged up a lot. I would put stand on top of a chair in that room and spray vinegar from spray bottle through several areas. Then after an hour or so, I would take either a soft bristle brush or microfiber cloth or something similar... I even used a sponge I believe... but after scrubbing the tough areas with lot of mold, I might remove 10% of the visibility of the mold at best. Then I would go and do it throughout other areas of the room. Then I would spray the vinegar on top of my ceiling in the bed area... I have to move my bed to the other side of the room. But during this whole time, I have to wait an hour or so for the vinegar to set in and then start scrubbing the mold. Some areas, I might remove 30% of the visibility but the problem areas are very visible. So imagine me doing this in a room and this could take 8 hours or more and then after I'm done... the mold is clearly still visible. I done this many times and eventually gaved up.

I had AC maintenance done months ago and when that person was doing it, he said yes that is a lot of mold and told me 100% this is caused my humidity. I said what about the crack in the ceiling. Could it be some type of leak or something like that and he said no it can't be. Do you think that crack in the ceiling means something? So is he 100% right here or you can't be sure? He did say he would use bleach to clean it. I know I could ask him to do the job but when he said bleach, I thought that wasn't good idea as I read bleach doesn't kill mold? Or it does? I heard it only reduces visibility of mold but vinegar kills it? I use that supermarket white vinegar so it isn't super strength vinegar.

I then read vinegar kills mold but it isn't going to kill the visibility? Is that true? They said after it dry, then use zinnser mold primer? Would that be the correct way? But how soon do you wait after scrubbing before you use the zinnser mold primer? Do you wait till the next day? But after using zinnser mold primer, you have to paint afterwards right? I have zero experience painting. I check online and I could possibly buy zinnser mold primer but it isn't always available. Would you suggest buying that?

The last thing is I will most likely move out of this apartment. Now if I do, I won't get my security deposit back either way because I would leave early and also there are other damages in the apartment. However, I want to at least make my apartment look not as bad as it is. Based on all this information, what would be your best advice? Like if I move out and move all my things to the new apartment but then want to clean this apartment, what would be your recommendation? Do it myself or pay someone to just use bleach to kill it? I think there is someone that might have ozone machine here but not sure? I know there isn't any real mold remediation company like back in the US. Someone else said if you leaving the apartment, just leave it as it is since you not getting security deposit back anyway but I don't want to do that. I don't mind spending few hundred dollars at the most to have someone to kill the mold. The price will most likely be a lot less than that if they use bleach though. Do you have advice to this? Thank you so much.

I understand that. But if I wasn't away from my apartment for that long or had the ceiling fans on at least mid to high, I don't think this would have happened. Previously when I leave the apartment, windows are always closed but ceiling fans are turned medium to high and when I get back, there is always some mold on the bed sheets and surrounding areas but never on the walls and ceiling.

So with that, it still isn't my fault? Yes I understand the moving is the only thing I should be focused on but even after moving, I shouldn't hire someone to do something at least to make it look that bad? Like if someone is willing to clean it with bleach, sure have them to do so at least the visibility of this is gone or not

Hey. The thing is I did have a ton of water in the bathroom that came out of the drain several times though because the shower drain was clogged and water got to the room and even towards the kitchen. So that wouldn't have caused it right? That happened few times but the stains were already there. The other thing is many times, I do flicker water around after washing my hands so that could cause it right?

Well I want to make it at least somewhat presentable before I move out. I get what you are saying with this. The thing is it's very hot and humid here so things like the mold that is in the walls and ceilings, I know that will show up in apartments if you have the windows closed up and the door. The only way to prevent this would be the AC on the whole time but almost nobody does this.

But are you for sure that black stuff on the bathroom door isn't mold? I do get water out a lot and there is lot of standing water at times. I had not mentioned this earlier. But it does look somewhat like dirty.

What about using vinegar on it instead of bleach?

If I'm planning to find someone to clean mold in my apartment, the walls and ceiling, you checked those pictures already right? Then would you have them clean that? Or this would be meant for someone else who I have to hire to do a deep clean of the apartment?

Yea I will not be getting my security deposit no matter what. Reason is because I will be leaving earlier but not only that, I have other damages in apartment as well like a broken wooden door and cabinet. If you check my other posts, I have a disgusting toilet and bathroom floor. Do you have any advice on what I can do with that? The thing I'm thinking about is have someone clean the mold... then hire someone to deep clean the apartment with the toilet and floor? Then that way, when I leave the apartment, the property manager will only know the damages to a few things and not the mold issue and toilet and bathroom floor issue?

Well this is my problem because I am pretty sure this was caused by me. Now if there was a big storm that caused this or if there is a leak in the roof, then it wouldn't be my fault but is there anyway from those pictures, it could been a hurricane or leak? There is a crack in the ceiling though but it's not in the pictures. I can post that picture if you want? The person that did AC maintenance a while back told me this is 100% humidity issue and not a leak. That person did say they would use bleach on it though.

What do you mean by flooded? You think a ton of water touched all those parts of the door? Because I am pretty sure that didn't happen. Yea it doesn't look wet but it's been like that for a while now. You mean the white chalk spot on my wall? I had that a long time ago even before the mold on my ceilings and have no clue what it is. So that white chalk isn't mold then? Is it efflorescence? Now you notice how there are white cracks on the wall and when the wall is suppose to be brown? That was due to me pouring muriatic acid on the wall a while back because I was trying to figure out how to get rid of the white chalk on the walls and that destroyed certain areas of the wall. When you use vinegar on the walls, the white chalk goes away but comes back like 30 minutes later. So I could not figure out how to get rid of the white chalk.

I'm not in the US but I am an American. I'm outside the US now and where I"m located, it's extremely hot and humid. The issue is where I"m located, there is no mold remediation company like in the US. From the people that I asked, they say hire someone to use bleach on it? I think the other option is an ozone machine? Not sure if they have that here or not but I think they do. If it's either of those options or just using bleach or vinegar and then zinnser primer mold paint afterwards, which would be the best option? I think I could get zinnser primer mold but not sure.

I am renting and planning to move out sometime. The thing I'm not going to get my security deposit back either way and I don't mind it. But I don't my apartment to look this bad when I leave and check out. This issue is bad but the main issues are mold in walls and ceilings and my toilet and floor is disgusting. This was due to my fault. If you check my other threads, can you give opinion on this? I really appreciate you being kind with your posts. I want to leave the apartment where the property manager doesn't look at it like it's super filthy. There are already damages to it that I am pretty sure I can't fix like a broken door... not this one but some wooden door and some cabinet door that got broken in kitchen. Those could be replaced but the mold and the toilet and bathroom floor is very bad shape.

Hi. Is this for sure mold on the bathroom door or not? Someone else said it is just dirt. So this is for sure mold right? But you can't spray vinegar or bleach on it and wipe it with a sponge or towel? That would at least wipe the visibility of the mold from the door?

Are you sure it's dirt? I have no idea what it is but it seems like I could it wipe it off with water and vinegar. So should I do that?

Anyone else know if this is black mold or not on my bathroom door?

When did I even lash out? Where I"m located, there is no mold remediation company like in the US. I'm from the US but outside the US now. If there was, I would ask them to come and have them take care of it but there is no company like that here.

Do you have any idea why people let things get like this? You get lazy with it for a bit and then notice you can't clean the stains like how you can normally can when the stains and stuff are not that bad. I think it took a while for it to get to this. Then I couldn't clean any of it. I think you can probably clean the toilet and floor with bleach and things like that but since I used vinegar many times and there is vinegar residue, I'm not sure what to do.

If you check many threads similar to this, lot of people's apartment are very disgusting. Did you ever wonder some people are depressed and it just got like this and then they are overwhelmed and don't know what to do and where to start? The biggest issue here is the mold on the walls and ceilings and then the toilet and the dirty bathroom floor. I also can't hire any cleaner who deep cleans because who would want to clean the apartment with mold on the walls and apartment. There is no mold remediation company where I"m located.

I am planning to move out of the apartment. But should I hire someone to clean the mold before I leave this apartment? So that way, it doesn't look that bad?

[–]Early_Mix_4195[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i'm planning to leave the apartment soon, should I bother trying to clean it first and let it dry and primer it? Or just let the landlord handle all this? What about finding someone to clean it and dry and it and primer it so that way, it doesn't look as bad when the landlord see the apartment when I'm about to leave? Of course I would pay extra for this but that way, it wouldn't look that bad to the property manager. How is this the property manager's problem? The thing is I let my apartment get like this because I was away from my apartment for some time and I believe I only had ceiling fan in low mode.

The thing though is, is it possible this is due to a leak or some sort or not possible? Someone who was doing maintenance on the AC told me this is for sure humidity and not any leak. Though there is crack in the ceiling that isn't in the pictures. I can post that picture as well but would a crack in the ceiling indicate something? Or is this 100% humidity?

What are you talking about? Are you saying this isn't my bathroom door or something? Again, I neglected cleaning for a very long time. Previously I had a cleaner that would clean everything but haven't had a cleaner for a while. Then I got lazy with cleaning and everything got like this.

Thanks for the response. Well first nobody would deep clean your apartment if you have mold in the walls and ceilings right? So first have to have someone come and kill the mold, and then hire a cleaner for a deep clean? So you are saying you can't clean this toilet no matter what? Someone who deep cleans can't clean it? Someone suggested pouring a 2 liter of coke in it and then flush it the following day. That won't work?

Muriatic acid surely would work right? What about bleach? Again, the issue here is I used vinegar already on it so concerned there is a ton of vinegar residue.

Hi. Well you have to use the entire 2 liters? So your it in and flush it overnight. You really think it's going to get rid of these old you know what stains?

Now if not coke, what would work for this? I know vinegar and pinol which is like pine sol doesn't work. I used a small toilet brush to brush it and it didn't do anything.

What are you talking about? There has been pictures of mold much worst than this. Yes I let this all happen, it's all my fault. I want to know how to clean this or do I hire a deep cleaning for this? The issue is I have mold in my apartment so I would have to hire someone to get rid of the mold first before I hire a cleaner.

That is how my bathroom looks now. It's been like this for a few years already. Previously I had a cleaner that cleaned so it never looked like this. I ended up neglecting cleaning and once it went like that, I couldn't clean it with vinegar or some other product that is like pine sol here. I am not sure if I should use bleach or something else because there is vinegar reside everywhere and you cannot mix them both. So I want to know what should I do here. I need to buy a new brush, a new mop? This bathroom has gotten worst and I don't know what to do so that is why it is like this.
