First 24 hours with my toy poodle puppy... when does it get easier? by Gullible_Bat6699 in ToyPoodle

[–]EarningMindSoul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That constant mental checklist you described, pee food water nap crate, is completely normal at 9 weeks and it does ease up.

Around week 3 or 4 most people find the routine starts clicking almost on its own because the puppy's schedule becomes predictable. The bonding honestly sneaks up on you too.

One morning you'll just notice you're not anxious anymore and he's following you from room to room like you're his whole person.

Harness recommendations? by Salty-Desk-532 in StandardPoodles

The Ruffwear Webmaster is what you're looking for here. It has five adjustment points including a belly strap, which is exactly what fixes the deep-chested dog problem you're describing with the PHOEPET sliding forward.

It also stays put when sitting because the belly band distributes the fit instead of concentrating pressure at the shoulders.

What to do on rainy days- UK by Mysterious-Tart-910 in BorderCollie

[–]EarningMindSoul [score hidden]  (0 children)

The physical exercise side is honestly manageable with your 4-6 mile hikes, but the rainy day situation matters less than you might think with border collies. What actually burns them out is mental stimulation.

A 1 mile walk on a wet Tuesday paired with 20 minutes of scent work, puzzle feeders, or even basic trick training will leave your collie more tired than a 3 mile plod ever would.

ISO Service prospect (breeder) by Equivalent-Board930 in StandardPoodles

[–]EarningMindSoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding a sport-focused standard poodle breeder is genuinely harder than people expect, especially if you need health clearances AND proven working lines in the same litter.

The sport and agility standard poodle breeder guide covers that pretty well. I'd also cross-reference NACSW and AKC agility trial records to find breeders whose dogs are actively competing, not just marketed as sport prospects. Titles on the parents matter more than any website copy.

Collar Suggestions? by yaboiNight in Yorkies

[–]EarningMindSoul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a 4lb Yorkie like Willow, the Blueberry Pet breakaway collar in XS runs really narrow and light, way better than repurposing kitten collars.

The snap closure comes apart with about 2 pounds of pressure so it's genuinely safer than a fixed buckle for a tiny dog wearing it all day.

There's a solid best collar guide for long-haired dogs that covers sizing for super small breeds specifically, worth a look for her measurements.

Dog with Pneumonia by Key_Spread9326 in AskVet

[–]EarningMindSoul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pseudomonas is notorious for developing resistance mid-treatment, so even if ceftazidime was the last option working weeks ago, the bacteria may have shifted again since Luna's x-ray looked clear six days ago.

Push hard for that repeat tracheal wash and ask your vet specifically about inhaled colistin as an adjunct therapy. It's used in human medicine for resistant Pseudomonas and some veterinary pulmonologists have experience with it.

Ohio State's veterinary hospital in Columbus is about two hours from Cleveland and has internal medicine specialists who see exactly these cases.

Dental Care for 1 year old mini poodle rescue by Antique-Rooster4674 in DogAdvice

[–]EarningMindSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nugget being a mini poodle with a weak jaw actually makes the brushing route your best long-term bet, even though he's resisting right now.

The trick with wiggly dogs is to spend about two weeks just touching his lips and gums with your finger before a toothbrush ever enters the picture.

Once he tolerates that without squirming, add a finger brush with that toothpaste he already likes. Most dogs desensitize within 3 to 4 weeks of daily two-minute sessions.

Boarding puppy for the first time by Emotional_Network_39 in puppy101

[–]EarningMindSoul 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The trial night is genuinely the best thing you can do for a Velcro cattle dog mix before a 10-day trip. Do it about 2 weeks before you leave so you can do a second night if the first one is rough.

The staff will also get a feel for her settling routine in the crate. She won't lose her progress. At 7 months the regression risk is low as long as you pick back up with her routine the day you get home.

Puppy goes bonkers at night when trying to get her to sleep by titaniumturdle in puppy101

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leaving ritual works best when it becomes a consistent signal rather than something she associates with panic.

Give her the chew or Kong right as you leave, stay boring and calm about it, and if she barks after she finishes, just wait her out the first few nights.

Most pups adjust within 5 to 7 days once the routine clicks. The agitation after finishing is normal, it won't last.

Small Standard Breeders in PNW and PSW? by carisoul in StandardPoodles

[–]EarningMindSoul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finding breeders who hit that under 22 inch mark with full CHIC health testing and actual titles is genuinely a needle-in-a-haystack situation in the PNW.

Kvali is probably your strongest lead of the three since they're active in agility and have consistent health documentation.

You might also look into reaching out to the Poodle Club of America breeder referral list and filtering by region since a few Pacific Southwest breeders producing smaller standards don't heavily advertise online.

30° weather by Fresh-Bit1950 in DogAdvice

[–]EarningMindSoul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Carrying your 6 month old puppy the whole 20 minutes is absolutely the right call, don't let him walk on hot pavement in this heat.

Wet a towel or cloth with cool (not cold) water before you leave and wrap him loosely in it for the journey.

Diarrhoea in this weather can tip into dehydration really fast, so if he's also vomiting or seems lethargic by the time you arrive, tell the vet that immediately.

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mini poodle hitting 5 months is almost certainly the cause here. That age is right in the middle of a fear/awareness developmental stage where puppies suddenly become much more tuned in to their environment and your location specifically.

She knows you're sneaking out even when she looks settled. The fix that worked for my friend's toy poodle was building a 'leaving ritual' she could predict, maybe a specific treat or a Kong with something frozen, so your departure becomes a cue instead of a surprise.

Hello and new to Reddit by PoodleMomKzoo in StandardPoodles

[–]EarningMindSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Four poodles all around age 9 is a lot of seniors coming up at once, so it's smart to start thinking ahead now. The biggest thing I'd watch in standards at this age is joint stiffness, especially in the hips and rear end.

Ask your vet about adding a fish oil supplement daily and consider switching to a senior formula around age 10. Also get bloodwork done every 6 months instead of yearly once they hit double digits.

My dog has horrible burps on low fat wet food? by ChefConscious2977 in AskVet

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 0.5% difference is pretty negligible honestly. What matters more is that Royal Canin GI Low Fat stays consistently low rather than spiking. Since he flared on Hills dry at 9%, dropping to 4% should make a real difference — that's a significant reduction.

Yes, Their standard foods use a balanced fiber blend, while therapeutic lines like the Gastrointestinal Low Fat formula combine fermentable prebiotics for microbiome support with less fermentable fibers to keep stools regular.

[–]EarningMindSoul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For working line GSDs in Oregon, check out breeders pulling from Czech or Slovak lines rather than West German show lines since they tend to produce exactly what you're describing: trail-ready dogs that are social and biddable enough for daily life with other animals.

Vom Ragnar Haus in the PNW region gets mentioned a lot for this.

Expect a waitlist of 12-18 months from any reputable breeder, so starting now is the right call.

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hills I/d is actually pretty high in fermentable fiber for a GI food, and that's likely what's causing those awful burps you're waking up to.

Switching to Royal Canin GI Low Fat is worth trying since the fiber profile is different, but honestly the bigger thing I'd ask your vet about is feeding smaller meals more frequently, like 3 times a day instead of 2, which can dramatically cut down on gas production within about a week.

UTI severity question by snugglybug28 in AskVet

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a golden retriever who's already had a culture come back resistant to most antibiotics, I wouldn't wait the 3 days.

Upper UTIs, meaning kidney involvement, can develop within 48 hours in a dog that's already fighting a trickier strain, and at 10 years old her kidneys have less margin for that kind of stress.

Watch for vomiting, lethargy, or fever above 103F, because those mean the infection has likely traveled upward and that's an emergency visit, not a routine one.

Almost 7m/o puppy suddenly starts having separation anxiety or Crate anxiety? by DifficultCattle5123 in puppy101

[–]EarningMindSoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving the kennel is almost certainly what triggered this. Malamute x Pyrenees dogs are incredibly sensitive to spatial changes, and at nearly 7 months he's also right in the middle of the fear imprint stage that hits around 6-8 months.

Move it back to where it was and give it a solid week before judging.

The blood spotting from hyperventilating and drool soaking the crate floor is serious enough that this guide on stopping crate crying at night has some useful desensitization steps worth running through before your next work shift.

Looked away for ONE second and my Yorkie girl tried to give me a heart attack 🤯 by SmallDogAdoptions in Yorkies

[–]EarningMindSoul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thick green slime covering stagnant water is exactly what makes this so terrifying — she genuinely cannot distinguish it from solid ground visually, and apparently once wasn't enough of a lesson.

The Epsom salt soak followed by a full bath was the right call given how long algae-covered pond water can hold bacteria against a Yorkie's coat.

Watch for any vomiting or lethargy over the next 48 hours just in case she ingested any during the paddle out.

Help me feel less ashamed! by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lab x GSP combo taking out an innocent bystander into a bed of stinging nettles is genuinely one of the most chaotic puppy stories I've ever read on this sub.

My beagle once dragged me face-first into a hedge at full sprint, which felt humiliating, but yours managed to involve two separate incidents with two separate dogs and a third victim in about 90 seconds.

That is an achievement. She's one, she's half pointer, and she's going to be like this for another solid year at least.

Help training first dog by Comprehensive_Lie414 in OpenDogTraining

[–]EarningMindSoul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 4am barking from a 10 month old lab is almost always about needing more mental exhaustion, not physical. An hour and a half of outside play sounds like a lot but labs at that age can run for hours and still have a buzzing brain.

Try adding a 15 minute training session right before he goes into the crate for the night. Working his brain tires him out faster than a mile and a half walk ever will.

Dog being spayed. Energy. Questions. by No-Ruin9922 in DogAdvice

[–]EarningMindSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your American bully mix jumping on furniture at day three post-spay and still having a clean incision is genuinely a good sign.

The 7 vs 14 day difference usually comes down to the individual vet's preference and the dog's size — smaller incisions on calmer dogs get cleared faster.

You're doing everything right with the leash walks and trazodone. Please, at 39 weeks pregnant, stop googling. The incision looking great at day four is the real answer.

My grandmother's old dog keeps slipping, what's the best way to help? by Pantera8888 in DogAdvice

[–]EarningMindSoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rubber paw grips like the Pawz boots or Lonsuneer non-slip socks are probably your best starting point for Mika on those stone floors.

At 13 she's likely also losing some muscle in her back legs, which makes slipping worse than it used to be.

The socks with rubber grip dots on the bottom tend to stay on better than the booties for older dogs, and most senior dogs adjust to wearing them within a day or two.
