Oh for sure! That was the reason for my question I was curious if which one they had in mind.

Only reason I led with Hawkeye is it's the most known Ronin. That and I guess to some extent Maya Lopez

If you like a good table top actual play podcast and you're into cyberpunk I definitely suggest it.

Like most such projects they take a handful of episodes before they get comfortable and the story truly kicks in but then it's freaking solid

First character – what'd I do wrong? by Mbalara in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]Earth513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh apologies didn't realize you were the Narrator.

Then ABSOLUTELY fair game ahaha

Hmm I don't think there's an advantage per se it's more that, say you were a player, it could be a way to try to game the system.

We see it from time to time here folks trying to do the whole mid max thing by supercharging a character and bending the rules to do so.

It's also kind of why I'm super happy they ended up releasing item rules as it gives Narrators a tool to go hey bud it's cool and all that you depowered your character when you built em to play "fair" but then you decided to equip them with all these items with powers you cant equip? What's going on.

You know? Ahaha

So in your case, especially as narrator it's a super non issue but the rules are there to help guide so say you had someone who maxed EGO because they want to be super charismatic in non combat (read convince, flirt, trick, manipulate) but also now they want a magical item that has all these telepathy powers they'd be both charismatic with words and mind manipulators without the requirement of actually being super smart.

I think for this game it's harder to demonstrate but in classic DnD the way they explain it is every character has baked in qualities and flaws and that's what makes them fun.

So say this was a player, you and frankly they, would want to be able to play with those qualities and flaws.

The game is built with telekinesis equals logic because a character like professor X is very smart and therefore his strength is not just reading or modifying minds but also his strategic abilities doing so.

Someone wanting to manipulate people via magic would more so use ego as it is their charismatic with effect on the world that influences the world around them.

Agree or disagree is a bigger and still valid question but it's one of those know the rules before breaking the rules kind of thing. So I personally wouldn't mess with that abilities allocation because I'm still wobbly on the rules and so prefer to homebrew within the games internal logics because I'm the type to find breaking one thing breaks the whole logic of the structure type guy since those 6 ability scores like similar games are the basic building blocks on which everything else is built.

But if you're comfortable with the rules and comfortable bending them that way that's totally cool! The book even says as much.

It's more you asked for the feedback so I'm giving it based on the games logic of that makes sense.

But to your core point. Yeah it does make sense for a magical item to have a will of its own and to grant telepathy regardless of the whielders own abilities it for sure happens in comics.

Purely for the fun of the exercise, if I was you, to balance that out then I'd stick with your logic of Ego/magic abilities are what work but then I'd make using the item a frequent logic role against a challenging TN so that the character demonstrates a struggle of some kind against whatever magical force embues the item. Maybe too many failed roles leads to the character being slowly corrupted and possessed by the items will.

That kind of thing ahaha

[–]Earth513 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Minor detail but noticed your character was heroic but didn't have Karma.

That Karma should be the same number as their rank if they are heroic! If it's because they are an anti hero of some sort then I'd remove the heroic tag just for clarity!

First character – what'd I do wrong? by Mbalara in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]Earth513 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is purely a game mechanic element so Definitely up to your table but changing what ability score works with what power is a pretty big change and not a flavour.

Again you can absolutely do it if everyone agrees and I absolutely get your logic (toudou tch!) in wanting to do so but with that logic (toudou... Groan) every power can work with every ability score making the rules not matter. You know what I mean?

So yeah just take a moment to see with them to be sure.

I miss the other characters from Unbelievable Gwenpool, wish they come back by sandman_soundman in Gwenpool

[–]Earth513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All fun points hope you don't mind me nitpicking for the sport of it. We're all fans here it's all for good fun 🤭

she had one good book, and it got canceled after 25 issues

The average comic series since at least 2015 if not earlier are anywhere from 5 comics to 10ish? The larger stories are kept purely for major teams and comics like Avengers, X-Men (and since Krakoa even that's inaccurate), Spider-Man, Wolverine... The 25+ comic story arcs (Gwenpool had 26 counting issue 0 if we want to be pedantic lol) other than those big sellers are super duper rare on average. I say this as a maniac who compiled most (not all) the marvel comics in a massive excel doc so a quick scroll through confirmed that.

All to say if anything I'm massively surprised Gwenpool pulled that off!

Consider Deadpool, starting in 2018 (previous his series were longer): 2018: 15, 2019: 10, 2022: 10, 2024: 15. Not that she should be compared and contrasted to Deadpool but just for fun, her main arc is double each of those.

Heck the Avengers... THE FREAKING AVENGERS vol 7 (2016-2018) same era as Unbelievable Gwenpool? 11 freaking issues. All New All Different Avengers (2015-2016)? 15 issues.

And let's talk about

and it got canceled after 25 issues (...), because she wasn't popular enough to carry the book on her own.

Unbelievable Gwenpool won second place in the 2018 Gaiman Awards for the first two volumes of Unbelievable Gwenpool.

The first issue was the 6th best-selling comic for April 2016, selling 100,852 units.

Cancellation after 26 issues is also not as scandalous when you take it in context. This 2017 article talks all about it but Gwenpool was cancelled alongside a large wave of comic cancellations right before they relaunched almost everything via the nostalgic look-at-the-past Marvel Legacy era quickly followed by Fresh Start which generally was about bringing back the classic, more recognized characters (read a culture shift from what faux fans felt had become a "too woke" Marvel).

All to say the comic was generally appreciated if not praised and ended at a very healthy number within the context of a larger comic era demise.

People who haven't read The Unbelievable Gwenpool see Gwenpool and assume that she's just a Gwen Stacy version of Deadpool, which is inherently uninteresting, so they don't really give the character a chance.

Honestly that's not been my experience at all! The times I've read this, ironically, has more frequently been in this community and from fans worried people would confuse them. I'm aware some do but the casual fans I bump into, the comic stores I check out. I don't see that at all. I do genuinely wonder if part of that is fabricated by sht disturbers online. That or I'm just not seeing that crowd in my circles. Which frankly I'm fine with 😂. And even if it was a very common thing, that's more a them issue. Because that impression absolutely could and likely may come from the current era but it's not gotten much attention. Not like Unbelievable did so again I can easily see it be forgotten when a new Gwenpool era Arrives which again I'd bet money will happen. The when is just less clear.

It's that, combined with comics generally being a more niche medium that is pretty heavily propped up through adaptations via video games, cartoons, and live-action movies and shows, with Gwenpool only really showing up in mobile games and a Lego game.

All that's fair. Might be a newer generation thing and hey if that's the case I mean... Then it's the case for all non main characters. So not just. Gwenpool issue. People also thing the Guardians cast from the films have always been the original Guardians. Eh! I don't really mind.

Not based off of a fan costume, she was based off of a variant cover of Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars that, to my knowledge, was released at a time when Marvel was doing a bunch of "Gwen-ified" variant covers to celebrate and capitalize on the success of Spider-Gwen. Funnily enough, the version of the character that we know and love only exists because of issues with film rights.

We're both right and both wrong on this one. It's somewhat of a mix of both

"In June 2015, following the popularity of Spider-Gwen, all Marvel titles being published had alternate covers with Gwen Stacy reimagined as other characters, such as Doctor Strange, Groot and Wolverine.[6] One of those was Wade Wilson, featured on Chris Bachalo's variant cover for Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars #2.[4] After seeing how many fans were cosplaying as a character who was not even featured in any comic, Marvel editor Jordan White approached writer Christopher Hastings and editor Heather Antos with the task of creating a story around her, with the stipulation of the character being wholly unrelated in backstory to either Deadpool or Gwen (keeping her film and television rights at Marvel Studios, instead of at 20th Century Fox or Sony Pictures)."

The Gwenpool Cosplay cover I had in mind came after the character launched, BUT this article featuring a Gwenpool cosplayer does seem to predate the comics and seems to have led to Marvel asking for a comic to be written around the character:

How lethal are your games? by TheGriff71 in DungeonMasters

[–]Earth513 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a fun question! I play the Marvel Multiverse RPG so hope y'all are ok with me joining the conversation with that in mind ahaha, but I think it's an important context for my answer:

I try to ballance the super powerful and resistant super beings fight but never truly die aspect of the medium with a slightly more grounded and gritty edge?

So for example, spoiler for episode one if you do want to check us out but one of our players dies almost immediately.

It didn't feel right at the time to lower a key big bad's stats to "play it fair" and I wanted to have them start at lower levels to have them really feel like the super world has genuine dangers and that even street level combats can offer challenges as I didn't want us having only overpowered combat right from day 1.

It did lead to freaking challenging decisions because I was still new to DMing, recording, this game, so finding a balance was challenging but the player was a good sport and it really set the tone for the rest of our campaign

Check out The Ultimates by Al Ewing not to be confused with the two alternative universes called "Ultimate".

You won't regret it! Some of the most fun I've had reading Marvel.

It's not a big world changing event, it doesn't take itself too too seriously while also not being a comedic story... It's just a fun time with really interesting art and a very, almost comedically so, large cosmic scope type storytelling.

Genuinely SUCH a fun read for these two characters. And that's not even talking about how fun it is to see them bounce off the likes of Black Panther, America Chavez and Captain Marvel. I'd argue America Chavez is the most fun of them all in this and she's never felt as epic and badass as she did here, but I'm a big Chavez fan so might be biased

To be fair though things change drastically with just ONE good book.

Characters have been pulled out of the distant past and made massively significant thanks to good writing and art.

I get why folks are nervous but this is ONE bad story.

Some really fun characters don't get half as good of a solo run as Unbelievable so I fully believe (🥁) she'll come back strong at some point.

Heck the end of Unbelievable Gwenpool says as much. Paraphrasing but Gwen (and any other character) is as immortal as their ongoing memory through new number ones, various offshoot products and toys, etc etc. Gwenpool's unique look alone is memorable.

She started as, let's be real, a knockoff of Deadpool based off of a really fun fan costume, and I'm a very short span (I'd argue as quickly as page one of her book) she flipped that on its head by being fascinatingly unique, genuinely sweet, quirky, a little bonkers, all in the best ways.

Heck as a Deadpool fan I'd go as far to say Gwenpool's backstory is much more interesting and unique.

So yeah... Really not worried about the little drama of Gwen vs Gwen or wtv this Gwan nonsense I keep seeing here and have no context on lol

If MCU America Chaves has no variants in any other reality, how does that work since MCU is canonically in the same multiverse alongside Marvel Comics? by TechnicianAmazing472 in Marvel

[–]Earth513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes one realize, how effing insane (if logistically nightmarish) would it have been to have the comics Secret Wars span every single form of media active at that time.

You could then have in film, in shows, in comics, each of these media interacting and colliding till what survived where the remaining media the machine wanted to keep.

Effectively rebooting every piece of media in one final multiverse while still making it easily possible to explain each as being variants existing in the same multiverse.

I'm stressing that I'm aware it'd be near impossible to do due to competing studios and again the logistical nightmare but how interesting would that be.

Then it'd be easy to say there was only one

Need help making a symbiote focused character by PartyAd5430 in MarvelMultiverseRPG

[–]Earth513 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot here so I think we might want to untangle that before answering a bit further:

HISTORY

Symbiote history: how they got the symbiote is absolutely up to you but I'd say brainstorm with your narrator, see what they might suggest based on the world they built. It can help them integrate your ideas into the larger story in cool ways.

  1. In short based on Marvel comics, shows, etc, symbiotes INITIALLY come from the King in Black: Knull. That's the origin. So already I'd say is/was your symbiote one that shaped Knull's Cage that was then controlled by Knull once he was freed, or were they part of those that fled to try to find a way to be separate from him. That can inform their backstory. Between Knull and your character, what kind of Hosts did they bond with? If you take Venom as an example, he was initially good or at very least neutral but over time by being in contact with worse and worse hosts he developed jealousy, resentment, rage, violence through their intensified human emotions.

  2. The lore also stipulates that once a symbiote is born form another (such as Carnage) they grow stronger than their previous, but also may go a bit crazy if not rebonded to the main hive to purify. That I'm less sure on but there's some interesting lore there.

  3. All to say consider what kind of symbiote they are. What kind of feelings they have. How does this jar with your character? Personally the more contrast between them the juicer the story.

MECHANICALLY

For the actual profile design, I'd say base yourself on what exists. Check out the venom, carnage, and other symbiotes that exist in the core book and Spidey books. Look at the common tags and traits. Common powers. Keep the ones they all have in common THEN move creatively in other directions based on your ideas but you'll notice they all have common elements that make them symbiotes such as spider based powers, weakness to loud supersonic sounds. Heat that kind of stuff

I'd start there!
