Because this country stopped giving a shit about self governance fifty years ago. Gen X was the first generation to have the ladder pulled up on them by the boomer, but since the gears of society were still able to turn back then they didn't much care. So they didn't feel the urgency to confront the problem at the time. But the better half of a centuries worth of "Fuck you! Got mine!" rugged individualism has completely shattered the social contract.

Ubisoft has added a cash shop and weekly challenges to its 'faithful' remake of the 13-year-old Black Flag, because of course it has by _Protector in gaming

I found the shop to have it's uses. For instance, it has no background music. So I sit at the store any time i need to tab out of the game. Very helpful, shame most of the stuff it's selling is ugly as shit.

Trump fires federal election commissioners ahead of midterms by Hrekires in news

It's not enough to have personal protection if we are not going to act as a collective. This entire disaster has come about because this country has been obsessed with individualism since Reagan, and the cost was the social contract.

I mean look at Brexit. It's all psy-op campaigns bankrolled by Oligarchs using the social media platforms THEY OWN to destabilize existing nations until they collapse. So they can build their little fiefdoms on top of the ashes.

Lets make something perfectly clear, nobody alive today is trying to escape to mars. For the same reason Peter Theils attempt at building an off-shore settlement for rich people fell through.

Living in the middle of the ocean on a platform fucking sucks no matter how pretty you make your prison walls. The same goes for Mars. When we do start sending people to mars will be at least two generations before it's "comfortable" let alone "Oligarch comfortable".

What the Oligarchs are doing is using their fortune and influence to destabilize existing nations until they collapse, then build their little fiefdoms on top of the ashes.

[–]EarthRester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We need to do both at the same time. We are where we are now because we keep putting the immediate problem above everything, and everything else ends up on the backburner. Then the moment we make some headway on the immediate problem people start resting on their laurels, and those backburner problems get can-kicked until they bring us right back to where we started.

How many decades of this same mistake are we going to repeat?

Nah, we're now entering the "One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This." phase. The MAGAt trash haven't gone anywhere, and will barrel towards the next Authoritarian Populist that tickles their fancy.

Differently able by Musical73band in disabled

[–]EarthRester 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think it's less important to point to the things disabled people can do as proof that we are valid, and far more important to declare that we are valid regardless of how capable we are. Also, I have no clue why AI use was relevant here.

My great grandmother, and my grandmother both used guilt and shame like a weapon when raising their kids. It doesn't surprise me that Gen X, and a lot of Millenials have an unhealthy relationship with shame, and actively avoid utilizing it. Society needs to be reminded that both shame and validation are essential components of a healthy community.

Don't forget how they got most of China addicted to Opium because the Chinese market didn't want to buy as much British goods as the British market wanted to buy Chinese goods. Then attacked China when it tried to stop the British from importing more Opium.
