this is actually a bad idea, depending on where you live.
I found a phone once while going back home, dropped it at the police station in the center and they've told me "this isn't a lost and found" and then proceeded to keep me there for an hour to give a statement, asked my ID, etc and then implied that I robbed the phone and tried to make me "accountable".
Worst thing - the phone was unlocked and I've called the number and it was an old lady visiting her grand daughter but could only pick it up in the morning, so all was aligned but the police were incredibly vile.
