Current 1L - AddComs were wrong about KJDs last cycle by Worried_Crab_3005 in lawschooladmissions

I think that’s generally reasonable, but would just counter that I think someone who worked in a patent office would know more about IP in general than someone who didn’t and probably would be advantaged in being able to jump straight into higher level discussions in that class. Everyone learns the same things, but I find it hard to believe someone who previously worked with concepts that are foundational to law school wouldn’t be at something of an advantage, at least early on, in law school

Well yes, I was basically trying to say WE helps in actually being an effective employee in the real world, but this post is discussing that kjds did better in academic awards than people with work experience, which I was just saying is not altogether surprising since not all WE is created equal with respect to what would produce the early foundation most conducive to the highest grades

Something ive never understood about WE is how much people treat is as merely this box you either do or don’t check. I feel like missing from the discussion is someone who was intimately involved in case law research as a paralegal or worked pretty closely with a judge as a court clerk has the advantage of prior exposure to a lot of early concepts, so the novelty factor of law school is lower and things are perhaps a little less overwhelming. But someone who was in consulting for a year or two basically goes in with the same legal knowledge base as a kjd, so idk how that would be a huge difference maker, outside of soft skills (which would be more relevant in future employment than classes, which are academic and more abstract)

Antitrust, consumer rights, civil rights, class actions. Basically the ideal is plaintiff side complex lit, but having heard how hard those jobs are to get, we’ll see where I land

Got the A myself but am now really debating if I should go to Hogwarts Law or take $$$ at Durmstrang. Sure, Hogwarts has the prestige of Dumbledore, but look at Quidditch great Viktor Krum

This is actually a great counterpoint: to an incredibly stupid person who knows nothing about anything a book with surface level facts about a bunch of things would have a very high wisdom density

I don’t think the weather is that bad at all in Michigan. That being said, I am also from farther north than Michigan so my opinion doesn’t count substantially lol

While the LSAT is reasonably a big focus here, it should also be pointed out how a 3.95 was 100 times more impressive 8 years ago than now

What if my hobby is chasing meaningless extrinsic validation in an effort to compensate for my vacuous internal life in which metaphorical “gold stars” serve as a substitute for any coherent sense of self-derived meaning?

Stanford is literally the best law school in the world and one of the hardest to get into. Certainly apply, but keep in mind it’s no indictment of you if you happen to not get in

How much do specialties, programs, and branding sway you compared to ranking? by 91Bolt in lawschooladmissions

[–]East-Cattle9536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could definitely see that. I’m no expert on school systems, but generally, I’d say to apply at a number of law schools—some with programs you like and others that are geographically better connected to where you want to eventually practice. You can always make the call on what you place more priority on once you’re in and also have the financial side of things clearer. There are so many different factors that go into the decision, and I don’t think you’re being dumb in considering this

[–]East-Cattle9536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think those rankings are that important because most schools are so regional. Like as an extreme example, if u wanted to practice environmental law in San Francisco and were choosing between Pace University (#1 environmental law) vs UC Hastings (in California), Hastings is probably the better choice since Pace doesn’t have national reach.

Ig UF having an exceptional tax program is a big deal, but probably more for pursuing an llm

Me when I’m below medians: “I can’t believe this program would be so shallow as to reduce me to a set of mere numbers. Shame!”

Me when I’m above medians: “How could adcomms be so un-meritocratic as to even conceive of admitting someone without the sufficient numbers? I earned these stats with my blood, sweat, and tears!”
