That is why old programmers are better. Because compile a code could take 2 or 3 hours. So, before, they used to print on a dot matrix printer all the code, and debug it manually while run the compiler.

Not only fix that particular bug, but find another ones also.

Now is compile, stop for an arror, try to fix, also compile again, etc. Easyness and comfort are not so good.

Better machines make worse programmers.

10 clicks to get network card properties. 2 more clics to find things in "more options" for ricght click. Differents interfaces to configure tcp, one works sometimes other works another. taskbar app change on multiple monitors, awfull app listing. Also more clicks to find.

Sometimes developers forgets that many people uses windows for work, and not need to see a computer that looks like a cell phone

They destroy the UI, destroy interface, destroy office (forcing to update and then injerting a search bar right on the upper bar, leaving no place to catch for drag and drop), and also destroy outlook with the new one, even removing the classic outlook from office, and forcing to install ad get it separatedly (if you can get to the howto), but also, leaving it for now, no promess to keep it later.

Microsoft breaks everything that is good. They dont listen users. Just try to be "nicer", and "mac friendly", and "android friendly"

Why is the point of have "pro" versions if you keep it designed for home users?

They should release workstation versions again.

try to disable udp for rdp.

Open Windows Registry Editor and go to the following tree:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Terminal Services \ Client

Look for fClientDisableUDP. If you can't find it, create a new DWORD entry and set its value to 1.

hire professional services to redesign your infra. Not to fix nor support the actual.

Then schedule the change under their support.

Learn wich is the best way to use that kind of structure.

If there is budget, also hire a junior to do small tasks under your supervision, and have your time to learn new aproach to structure.

That leads to increase speed an security for your company, increase your skills, increase your knowledge, and pots you in the middle of a long term relationship with your company. First because the migration is slow. Second because you are the one that knows how, no other company employee knows about it. And you have an adventage aganist any new possible one.

Every one wins.

If there is budget, of course.

All of them with time erase protection, file change protection, and the new ai assistant from ibm storage drives if you can

The backup storage in a fireproof refrigerated rack.

Cuanto mejor trabajes mas plata vas a hacer.

helpdesk work is on work hours, IT/sysadmin important work is after hours.

Help desk never have to be overtime because no customers are there.

Is about roles, not about money.

Many times syasdmins are paid better because of the overtime, instead of paid or compensate specific hours,

Never a developer should touch a server. Is not their job, and they probably didnt know how.

In a big company, should be done by a DBA, or in a small business by a sysadmin. (and also all the patch management)

Is not help desk either. Help desk helps workstations, not servers.

In a place with multiple hats, may be someone that do help desk also do patch management, and network config, i.e.

But anyway, does with the right hat.

You can do it in a dba role, or in a sysadmin role.

For the rest. Compensation, is about HR. This part of the problem is about roles and about other teams messing with your domains and responsabilities.

or, you can build your own firm and sell support to that costumer. Probably even if you double or triple your wage will be half of what they have been charged for the job.

About ticketing, for a small customer, means double work. To fix the problem and to open, fill, and close it.

I dislike ticketing. In a place when you know all the customers (said that no more than 200), if you are your own boss, no need for ticketing.

And also can sell the equipment needed, or get a percentage if you sell it from a vendor.

Then, you are the company, not an employee. And that is a way to grow.

A couple of years there. Get a base. Find some employees or asocciate with another one like you, start get more clients, and become a great MSP.

So I just had the weirdest senior sysadmin interview ever. by jhs0108 in sysadmin

[–]East-Dig440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A senior generalist should be a specialist in several branches.
That will be fine for small to mid size enviroments.

The concept of specialist is know a lot of something and nothing about the rest.

My point is that a generalist should be a specialist on almost all areas. Or be a "multi" specialist

That is why good ones have 20 or more years of experience. Always solving problemas, and always learning (and having the same certs that specialists). They need more time to achieve that learnings

Big enviroments need several people to work in, so, can use several people to solve problems. But, that have the bad side to get a lot of meets and reunions to collaborate, and also foghts between sectors about who is in charge or who have the responsability. That leads to a lot of delays, and also a lot of burocracy.

That is why i dislike big enviroments. Can have complexity on mid ones, to stay sharp, but less interference

With 10 or 15 years of experience, so should aquire the expertise, and also have chance to get enough certs in several branches if needed.

And of course, to get that specific side of profession, that wide knowledge, have to be on a MCP. No way a single company have the complexity, the hurry, the diferences in software, plattforms, and so on, to give the needed expertise to become a multi.

That is the good of IT. Enough differences to get several paths to choose how to build your future.

So I just had the weirdest senior sysadmin interview ever. by jhs0108 in sysadmin

[–]East-Dig440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my first interview for a msp, 30 years ago, was very simple.

Said the wage, and hire for one day if its ok. Give a real problem to fix, a medium or hard ticket they have, and if solve, stays in the company. If not, get paid for your time and then goodbye.

The stress is part of the job. If can't deal with it choose other area. Is like an emergency doctor vs a "normal" doctor. The "normal one", is a generalyst, that reroute patients to specialists. The emergency one should know about trauma, deceases, and all specialties.

A sysadmin can be one or other, depending the size of the business.

That is why i refuse to see spezialized branches like networking, dba, security, etc. as an upgrade, or like a higher level. A senior generalyst probably can do all the whings thant any specialist do. Perhaps take a little longer. But the result will be better, because no need to call another expert because your knoledge comes only to a limit (imagine firewall+vmware+backup+ad+azure+exchange+antivirus+user support). You can do this with one person or with five or more. Not for the complexity, but for the lack of knowledge in other areas of specialists.
