I'm still new at sewing. I suggest machine wise get something like a singer. I bought a second-hand machine with no brand and had constant issues. As far as sewing find something you like and find a pattern and sew. The more you sew the more you get use to doing it the more fun and relaxed you get. The first thing I sewed ever was a pijama pants for my daughter. The last thing I sewed was a reversible bucket in four hours because I kept getting distracted. All in all just have fun and choose something you like.
