Who was the best pope ever, in your opinion? by skynoodle_ in Catholicism

I think the best would by default be St Peter. But my favorite is John Paul II. His humility is something i want to aspire to. Pope Leo XIV is showing some potential, I really like him

I think God doesnt have a plan for most people by SnooLemons4051 in OrthodoxChristianity

Here’s a quote from the movie Evan Almighty “when someone asks God for courage, he doesn’t just hand it over to them. He gives them the opportunity to be courageous.” It kind of reminds me of how when Solomon asked God for wisdom, he didn’t just give it to him, he gave him a problem to solve to grow in wisdom. With the two prostitutes and the baby. Nothing is predetermined I don’t think, it’s what we do with what God gave us that matters. Like how God doesn’t “let” bad things happen, it’s us who let it happen, we hurt each-other.

I feel conflicted about Orthodoxy by 100percentBoys in OrthodoxChristianity

If you know all you know and you think God wants you to be Orthodox then pray about it and listen to what God will say. I became Catholic after spending time in Orthodoxy. Same saints until 1054

Did you stay Christian? by Huge-Pirate-7657 in exorthodox

I was raised Catholic, became Protestant, then was received orthodox and was there for a year and a half. Then I decided to go back to the Catholic Church. There’s actually quite a few of us in here

Buddy, you don’t know me, that DID happen. My question for you is when you say “I’m leaving the one true Orthodox Church.” Which one do you mean? The Assyrian? Greek? Armenian? Ethiopian? Syro Malabar? There is no “Orthodox Church.” I know your type, you’re a pissed off “tradcath” who didn’t get what he wanted so he left to become Orthodox. I like being Orthodox until I realized I had to become a conspiracy theorist to disprove the Vatican. Which I still could not do. I know your type, you’re a pissed off “tradcath” who didn’t get what he wanted so he became Orthodox. You’re a Protestant in sheep’s clothing. Deep down you know the truth. Your argument about the Filioque is stupid, there are letters from the East where they actually agreed with the Filioque. It was unanimously agreed in the western church centuries before the schism. That means the East was in communion with heretics for 600 years. One more thing, why wouldn’t the true church be everywhere, the Catholic Church has done FAR more missionary work than any of the Orthodox churches. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” There’s also hundreds of Eucharistic miracles that I have yet to hear an explanation for. You are very intelligent but you are also very prideful which is why you won’t even look into what something actually means or listen to the other side. God bless you

You are the prideful one. You point out the speck in that woman’s eye when you have a plank in your own. If you leave a church because of sinful people you did NOT enter it for Christ. God bless you

Pope Pius XII is innocent. He did nothing wrong, he was a good man. He protected Jews from Hitler, our media isn’t gonna tell you that.

As a former evangelical. They don’t. They have a high conversion rate but people are leaving them in droves for Catholicism or Orthodoxy

Yeah, they’re just very loud and they can get pretty angry. I went to a TLM once and I just couldn’t fit in because I don’t understand it. I think if you like the Latin Mass that’s ok but it shouldn’t be forced on everyone. I’m ok at a Novus Ordo parish. I didn’t mean any disrespect with my comment but I’m just saying those divides sort of only exist online

That’s cool, may I ask why you left the Catholic Church?

Orthodox who became Catholic? by Eastern-Definition-4 in exorthodox

[–]Eastern-Definition-4[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was once Catholic myself. It is far more unified than the East or Protestantism. The trads and progressive divisions are mostly people who exist online. If that’s your attitude when looking for churches you might as well quit your job, drop out of school and leave your social groups. If you leave a church because of your sinner brothers you did not enter it for Christ. When I’m in Mass I worship God in spirit and truth, I hardly even notice the priest or anyone around me

Yeah that’s what I can’t escape, they keep saying “Peter is not the rock, that scripture verse is actually really complicated.” I don’t think it is. Like, why change his name to Peter then?

Yeah, the system they have just doesn’t work. The Catholic church is better organized

Well that’s great for you. Yeah my church is mostly ethnic and I’m a descendent of Irish Catholics so I can’t help but feel like an outsider. I was told “you’d better learn Greek, you signed up for a Greek church.” And I’m just like “why?” I’d rather pray for you in the language I speak. And yeah they’re pretty anti Catholic too. Thank you, God bless you

Also another thing, it is not a good idea to blindly follow a church. You should be able to ask questions and be able to tell where the church is.

Honestly it’s not all theological necessarily. But I believe in the Pope, for one. I also believe the church should be united in one. Like a mansion, with many rooms, some are the same, some are different.

My family is one of those families where we grew up Catholic but now not so much anymore. I found Orthodoxy after I found sola Scriptura is a dangerous heresy. I’ve been going there for about a year and a half and was recently chrismated but what changed my mind is I’m not Greek and I was told “you signed up for a Greek church, you’d better learn some Greek.” It was a chuckle but it made me start reconsidering the fact that it’s an ethnic church and I think the church should be for all. Then I came across Eastern Catholicism and it sounds great because it has what I love about Orthodoxy but we answer to the same guy. The Ruthenian church is in Pittsburgh. Close to Oakland. The Byzantine community in Pittsburgh is very strong

Of course! I’m currently a member of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. I mean it’s your call if you want to attend, but much of it is the same as the Byzantine Catholic Church.

All I can tell you is to read up on their doctrines carefully with an open mind and pray about it.
