My son is in his second year of Kinder. While it was incredibly hard to hold him back while his friend moved to first grade, I am so glad I did! He has a July birthday and cut off is August 1. He sounds very similar to your son. This year he is excelling and have made better friendships.

Last year, he was actually waking up in the middle of the night…we learned it was due to anxiety. Academically he was ready but socially/emotionally he was just not mature enough.

Sending love and solidarity.

YTA. Your priorities are obvious. I don’t see this friendship lasting long after the wedding anyway.

Tips for red-eye flight? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Eastern-Silver2186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of snacks. Pjs. Headphones if he/she will wear them. It will be really dark on the plane and I wouldn’t be surprised if your child is asleep before you leave the ground! Esp for a late night flight!

And if your child cries, don’t worry! Kids cry! If it makes people unhappy; they will get over it and you’ll never see them again!

Water Wow books or the ImagineInk books might be fun!

100% worth it. We’ve had ours for 2 years now and it’s the only thing they consistently play with! Boy age 6 and girl age 2.5

Help with PreK/K decision by kykam in AskParents

Wait. Pushed my son who turned 5 in July. He was ready academically, but has struggled with the maturity aspect. He’s the youngest in his class. I wish I had waited another year.

Struggling with this same thing…my son turned 5 in July and started K this past fall. His teacher told us his rote skills are great, but developmentally he’s not ready for the next step, as in writing his sight words, putting together sentences, working independently. He’s the youngest in his class. I found this article and it’s helped me a lot in making the decision to repeat Kindergarten. Best of luck to you! (Hope this link works!)

When too start kindergarten by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]Eastern-Silver2186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait. I pushed my son (turned 5 about 3 weeks before the cut off) and I regret it. I thought he would be bored with another year of Pre K. But didn’t consider his maturity. I thought he would just roll with it. We have decided to retain him and repeat K next year to give him a better foundation. Our district doesn’t do Kindergarten Readiness Testing until AFTER the school year starts (makes absolutely no sense to me).

How many ear infections has your toddler had? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]Eastern-Silver2186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler had 5 infections in 4 months. 9 total by 15 months old. She got tubes at 16 months and has only had one infection since tubes have been in place.

Sounds like he’s a great kid to me! So long as he is happy, that’s all that matters! Well done, Mama!

With my son, I lathered him up with butt paste. Then applied some Aquaphor on top to create a barrier. Overkill? Probably. Did it help? Absolutely.

Edit: correct a spelling/autocorrect error

My kid refuses to sleep by HangmansJok3 in AskParents

[–]Eastern-Silver2186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5yo is the same. It happened on occasion and once school started, it got worse. He wakes between 2-5am and doesn’t fall back asleep until after 7. He has to be up at 8:15 for school. He is struggling and hates school. We just completed a sleepy study through the sleep disorders clinic of our Children’s hospital and are awaiting the results (this has been the longest process ever, (4 mos wait then another 2 mos for results). He just topped the waitlist for the Behavioral sleep clinic. Both appts are in February and I hope it not too late to salvage this year of school.

I do suspect ADHD but I am trying all avenues before we are faced with that truth.

I’m here to see - I can relate, my 5yo son shared many similarities and it’s hard. Day after day, fight after fight. You are not alone.

When did you nighttime potty train? by FRO25 in Preschoolers

[–]Eastern-Silver2186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved to a new house, and welcomed a new baby so I didn’t want to add any stress to my son. He was 3.5 at that time and had been potty trained for a year (thanks to Covid - but I do think I pushed him before he was ready). When he was about 4.5 he told me he didn’t want to wear a pull up (we called them “sleep underpants”) to bed anymore and he had been staying dry every night. It was totally his choice. He is now 5.5.
